CH MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD VS KATY PERRY
Results: Lookout Writing: Archer
UNIFIED LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE/ “SANTA-KINI BOUT”
Mary: 34 YO, 5’8 (1.73), 50-41-0 (43 KO) since 2007, Foxfire Boxing
Katy: 34 YO, 5’8 (1.73 m), 38-10-0 (34 KO) since 2010, Front Street Gym
Before: “I like to think of this as ‘Christmas with The Carolina Cyclone and The Santa Barbara Slugger,” Mary Winstead cheerfully. “I just know it will be a lot good boxing and fun. If nothing else it will be drier than our last fight that Boxing on the Beach in 2017 where you knocked m into the ocean.”
“Hey, you yourself said it was a fair knockout, but I think I could do without having to drag you out of the surf again,” Katy Perry said agreeably.
“And it will be the rubber match between us. I’d beaten you back in 2015,” Mary said.
“How could I forget? I lost my Lightweight Title to you. I have to thank you for this chance. I thought after I my title shot in April I wouldn’t be getting another opportunity this year,” Katy said.
“I just wanted to see you in a Santa-Kini and if I could sweeten it up with a title shot, so much the better,” Mary said. “I do hope you’ve picked out a cute outfit.”
“Trust me. I love a sexy Santa outfit. Just be sure you’ve got something that won’t be too outshone by mine,” Katy teased.
“Oh, I’ll do my best,” Mary said.
There is much interest as the two fighters and their entourages approach the ring. Both are wearing Santa hats but their ring attire is concealed beneath faux fur trimmed Santa robes, It is only in the ring that they slide out the robes to the cheers of the arena crowd.
Mary is in red high-waisted bikini bottoms with faux white fur trim. She has a white bra with red faux trim. Her gloves and calf-high boots are black with red laces.
Katy wears a green high waisted bikini bottoms with red trim and a red bikini top with green trim. Her calf-high boots and gloves are green with red lacings.
“Very nice, Katy,” Mary pronounces.
“They will look so good when I pose for the victory picture of the Santa-Kini Winner of 2018,” Katy says confidently.
“Hmm,” Mary says thoughtfully.
The ring instructions proceed smoothly. Tap of the gloves. Fighters to their corners. Bell sounds. It is on.
R1: Katy putting pressure on Mary early by going to the body with hard thumping hooks to the stomach and ribs. Mary looking cramped, struggling to fight in close, but she is getting in some good counters to slow down Katy’s attack. Then Mary clips Katy on the chin which puts on her heels. Mary then scoots back and establishes a more comfortable distance and scores well against Katy’s body. Katy trying to work her way back in close, but Mary doing a good job of holding her off with alternating head and body shots. Katy vexed, but keeps fighting and keeps it close down to the bell. Judges do the totals and Mary wins it by a narrow margin.
R2: Mary and Katy both out with speed, but it is Katy who again lands early with a head snapping right to the jaw. Mary fires back with her own right, but ducks under it and comes back with a popping uppercut to the chin. Mary looking dazed as she tries to back way, but Katy staying with her, bobbing and weaving to keep Mary confused. Then Katy strikes with lightning right to the jaw. Mary stumbles forward, arms dropping to her sides and Katy adds another right to the jaw. Mary topples sideways and lands on the canvas with a crash. She comes down on her left side, but then rolls over, knees bent upwards, her right arms trying to shield her eyes from the overhead lights> Referee moves in as Katy takes to the neutral corner. Mary lying there, trying to pull her reeling senses together, finally realizes she is about to lose this fight! With determination, Mary Elizabeth Winstead gets to her feet and makes it up in time to break the colunt at “SEVEN!” Mary looks shaken but insists she can go on, Indeed, when Katy comes back in, Mary responds with a good jab and decent footwork. Katy pressing in, but Mary better able to stall these efforts down to the end of the round. Still, Katy has the fight’s first knockdown wins the round wide.
R3: Mary looks slow as she comes out of her corner and she is definitely not aggressive as the new round begins. Katy with plenty of aggression early, but Mary showing good defensive, firing out the jab and moving around to present an evasive target. Katy finding herself thwarted at every turn and starts to look uncertain. This cues a MEW counterattack. Mary hooks Katy deep in the stomach and then pops her in the jaw as Katy’s guard comes down. Katy is in confusion as she falls back, she plainly wasn’t expecting Mary to turn aggressive. Mary pushing Katy back, though Katy does rally and battles Mary steadily to the bell. However Mary has been able to steal the round by a close margin.
R4: Katy seems to have recovered from the surprise of Mary’s taking the offensive last round. She makes sure she is the one doing the attacking and she able to force Mary into fighting in close. Mary not liking this in close fighting, especially since she is taking a lot more shots to the body than she’s able to give back to Katy. Katy then shifts to a head attack and bangs Mary hard to the noggin with hard ones that must have bounced Mary’s senses around. Mary tightening down the hatches and trying to avoid a knockdown punch from the determined Katy. Mary able to keep on her feet to the bell, but she’s looking banged up and achy at the close of the stanza. Katy wins this one wide.
R5: Mary not looking good as she sits slumped on her stool during the break. Foxfire Lightweight trainer Rachel Nichols looking concerned as she supervises the corner crew. Mary lolling sleepily and looks sluggish coming out. This signals an all-out attack by Katy Perry. Katy able to drive her straight rights and lefts through Mary’s weak guard and into her. Mary falls back in confusion while Katy tries to circle and herd her into the ropes. Mary finds herself taking a seat on the strands and burying her face in her gloves as Katy thrashes her soundly. Mary getting worked over hard to body, but she is still hanging in, using the ropes to keep from going down despite the bombardment. It goes on and on for Mary, but when the bell rings, she is able to get off the ropes and walk back to her corner with only a small wobble in her step. Katy watches, hands on hips, shaking her head. She’s won the round in a shutout, but Mary is still standing. Katy finally goes to her corner with an exasperated look on her face.
R6: Katy might have seen this coming. When Katy tries to finish off Mary in the new round, she finds Mary recovered enough to fight back with strong counters. Katy whacked hard to the body to stall her attack and then Mary advances using the Jab to bust up Katy to the face. Katy now finds that Mary is willing to fight in close and she better at it. Katy resisting the attack hard and they seem to stalemate, but then Mary manages get in an overhand right that bangs Katy hard on the bridge of her nose. Katy lurching back, gets hit hard to the chin and now Katy just covers up. Time rounds out on the round and judges give it to Mary by a close margin.
R7: Mary now in full attack mode. She fires in her opening punches from a distance. Katy gets it hard to the head and then gets hooked in the belly, Mary keeps up the pressure as she moves in close. Now she is hammering Katy to the breasts and ribcage. Katy trying to fight back with the jab, but now finds she’s the one feeling cramped up in an in-close battle, Katy getting her chin chucked late by a quick MEW shots as Katy’s guard starts to weaken. Katy falling back faster, trying to get away from Mary’s relentless pressure, but only the bell sounding ends the ordeal. MEW takes the round wide and Katy is looking very wobbly getting back to her stool.
R8: Hard work by the season corner crew from Front Street get Katy Perry out for the next round, but she finds Mary still on the rampage. Mary now very aggressive, sensing her opponent’s failing defenses, and drives Katy back with body punching that turns into devastating shots to the jaw and chin. Katy trying to cover up, but Mary now goes to the gut with hooks like she’s pounding a heavy bag in the gym. Katy gurgling in pain as her legs go numb and her arms start to drop., Mary fires in a finishing right uppercut that spills Katy backwards until she is left sprawled on her back, arms at her sides and legs spread apart. Her eyes flutter and then close. MEW has departed for the neutral corner, Referee is counting. Katy moving, rolls to her side, but when she tries to push herself up on one arm, the arm fails and she rolls onto her back again.
“EIGHT!...NINE!...TEN!...YOU’RE OUT!”
THE WINNER AND STILL FCBA LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD DEFEATS KATY PERRY KO8!
After: Mary warmly congratulated by trainer Rachel Nichols, Alexandra Daddario and Laura Vandervoort join in. Mary smiling, waving to the fans as she walks the ring by herself. She stops by the Front Street corner where Katy has been revived and is now being tended to. She and Katy exchange kind words and hug. Then MEW spots Yvonne Strahovski come to the ringside and crouches down to share a hug with her best friend. Finally, the happy and smiling MEW rejoins her Foxfire friends and they all head to the locker room. Word has it that Foxfire owner Marvin Fox has organized a big holiday blowout for the whole Foxfire crew. They certainly have much to celebrate tonight.
The fight itself was an excellent one. Katy Perry tried hard, but that darned Winstead durability came back to bite her. Katy had seemed to be wearing MEW down over the first 5 rounds including a R5 shutout. Yet clawed her way back over R6-8 to finally put Katy down for the count in R8. Another impressive victory for Foxfire’s hard fighting lightweight no word who will get the next shot at the champ, but they should know Mary E. will not give up the belt without one terrific fight! Meanwhile, a frustrating loss for Katy Perry. She fought well most of the way, but when Mary made her late rounds comeback, Katy couldn’t stop her and lost her title shot. However Katy remains one the best lightweights out there and she looks to remain in title contention as 2019 dawns. All in all, a fine night for FCBA Lightweight fans and it promises more good fights in the year to come. |
