Laura Pausini vs. Kaya Scodelario (Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)
BEFORE:
British beauty established herself as an elite bantam and very quickly, going from FCBA debut to title shot in 16 months, and to the bantamweight gold less than a year later. And, there's no doubt that the former champ wants to erase "former" from her title. "This year is about the belts, yes," says Kaya. "And, she's just the latest girl standing in my way."
Laura, meanwhile, hasn't had that level of FCBA success, but the physical Italian is far from cowed by the prospect of facing Scodelario. "She's good, no doubt about it. But. I can stop any bantam in the FCBA. And, that includes her."
ROUND ONE:
Laura getting physical early. Kaya wants to stick and move, use those excellent legs, but Pausini not having any. She's cutting the ring, crowding the Brit, working her to the body every chance she gets. Scodelario tying up, trying to force breaks to get space, but Laura mostly successful wrestling or punching free, enabling her to continue bringing the heavy leather to bear. Kaya never hurt, but she's taking punishment, and Laura's piling up the points. Late in the round, Pausini gets Scodelario's attention with a hard right hand and Kaya covers up, opening the body to even more punishment. With the Brit on the defensive, the Italian simply bangs away lusty right to the bell. When it rings, Pausini's claimed the points wide and taken the 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
Kaya hears it in the corner between rounds. "GET. MOVING." And, after that disastrous first, she heeds the advice. She's moving from the very first seconds of the round, snapping out the jab, stopping to pop here and there, but mostly she's in constant motion. For Laura's part, she stays sound, moves her own feet, works to cut the ring, create exchanges. And, when she can do that, the Italian has the advantage due to her weight of shot. When she can't? Kaya piles up the points with those quick, accurate punches. Result is a closely-fought round, with each fighter offsetting what the other is doing by getting work done on her own terms. Not much in it going into the final thirty seconds, but during that half minute, it's Scodelario getting her terms, and she's able to do enough to grab the points close and even the fight at 19.
ROUND THREE:
More of the same in round three. It's Kaya in motion and Laura looking to cut the Brit off and bring her to battle. Pausini sitting down on her punches, DIGGING to the body, REEFING hard shot to the head. She's not looking to win this thing on the cards. Instead, she wants to wear down the younger woman with her power and and send her to the canvas. And, Kaya's feeling that power. She's starting to pink up to the body due to all of the Italian's work. But, she's taking the licking and continuing to tick, firing back in tight and scoring points when she can get space. She gets a bit less of it in the third though, as Laura's more successful creating close-in battle. And that changes the calculus on the cards. Result is that when the bell rings, it's Pausini who gets the points close, going back on the lead 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
And yet MORE of the same. Fight has settled into a pattern now. It's Kaya on the move and Laura looking to slow the British beauty down and bring her to battle. And, again, both fighters getting work done on their preferred terms. When Kaya's able to stick and move, stopping here and there for sharp flurries, she gets the better of things. When Pausini cuts off Scodelario, crowds her, forces heavy exchanges, it's the Italian who has the advantage. And, for the third round in a row, there's very little in it the entire way. Nobody can gain control and nobody's hurt, despite all the hard leather that lands over the three minutes of action. Just before the bell, we see the sharpest exchange of the fight, with both brunettes landing hard right hands. And, when said bell rings, it's ends the closest round of the fight. But, Kaya's eked out a win to even the fight at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
More aggression from Pausini now. She's walking through Kaya's jab in service of bringing the younger brunette to battle, and it works. Scodelarion getting cut off and crowded. Italian working body, landing hard shot to the head. Kaya trying to tie up and force breaks, but Laura shrugging her off and continuing to bang away. Scodelario corner, seeing what happened in the first being replayed, shouting at their girl to MOVE. BOOM! Short right hook and LAURA IS HURT! Pausini staggered. The Brit lets the hands go and DOWN GOES LAURA! Italian blown to her back midway through the fifth. Kaya to a neutral corner. Referee counting over the stricken Pausini. Laura rolls to her belly at six. Pushes to hands and knees, then crumples back to the canvas! It's OVER! And your winner by KO5 is Kaya Scodelario!
AFTER:
Kaya all smiles in the post. "Look, this was a stay-busy for me," the British beauty says dismissively. "We all know I'm ELITE. And, in fact, I'm the BEST bantam in the FCBA. Period. So, let's get me another shot at those belts, shall we?" |
