Evangeline Lilly vs. Shailene Woodley

(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

Very interesting bantam contest between six-time champion and possible future Hall of Famer Lilly and young up-and-comer Shailene, who was three days from her 13th birthday when Lilly won her first FCBA fight.

"Yeah," says Shailene with a nod. "I grew up watching her win titles and cheering for her. And, I'm well aware of how dangerous she still is. But. None of that will stop me from beating her."

"Shailene," says Evangeline with a smile, "Has a VERY bright future around here. But. When we step in the ring tonight, ONE of us will be the best bantamweight in the world. And, the OTHER will be Shailene Woodley."

ROUND ONE:

Lilly forward aggressively early. She's giving up some range to the willowy Woodley and wants to close and work her rival's bod...BOOM! Scintillating right hand from Shailene and LILLY IS HURT! Vangie staggering backward, nearly going down, and ON COMES WOODLEY! Younger brunette firing away with both hands, battering her rival back into the ropes, then having at her. Lilly in SERIOUS trouble as the referee looks in. She's clearly badly hurt and taking a TON of leather. But, she's hanging on, doing enough to keep the ref at bay. For Woodley's part, she's throwing everything she's got at the former champion trying to get her out of there. But. She can't do it. At least not before the bell rings. When it does, Lilly's looking quite the mess, but she's still standing. Woodley's grabbed the round wide, and leads 10-9. But. Again. Evangeline is still standing.

ROUND TWO:

Woodley to work immediately, taking the fight to a still-buzzed Vangie. Lilly trying to manage the offensive, giving ground, firing back here and there, but mostly taking a thumping. About a minute in, though, things change. Sturdy legs back under Evangeline and that makes all the difference. Veteran holding ground, banging back, slowing Shailene's offensive to a crawl and then stopping it completely. Brunettes spend the rest of the round in the middle of the ring boxing, and it's Lilly who gets the best of that, angling inside the younger woman's defenses and getting off in combination. Shailene has her moments on these terms, but Evangeline's getting more done, landing more and crisper shot. Problem is, she isn't gaining enough ground to make up for Shailene's big first minute. So, at the bell, Woodley gets the points close and goes up 20-18.

ROUND THREE:

Back to boxing mid-ring. And, Lilly's playing geometry teacher. Shailene trying to use that reach to keep Evangeline at range, but the veteran brunette's having none of it. Instead, it's all about angles, as she slips inside her rival's guard again and again to get off in combination. For the first half of the stanza, Lilly builds up a lead. But, Woodley's a pretty sharp cookie and she makes an adjustment, using a drop-slide step to create distance and move outside Vangie's left hand, forcing Lilly to move the feet to square. And, all of that gives the younger woman time to get the jab on target and then follow on with right hands. Adjustment makes a big difference, as Woodley gets the better of things in the second half, but, like Lilly the round before, she can't quite make up the stagger. At the bell, it's Evangeline close and Shailene's lead is cut to 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Woodley's got it going now. The footwork is causing the older woman all KINDS of problems. Evangeline being held on the outside by Shailene's jab, held in place with it, just long enough for the younger woman to drop in hard right hands. Lilly frustrated, can't get to her spots. But. She stays sound, keeps working, doesn't force the issue. She's already tasted her rival's power and knows well how dangerous getting sloppy now could be. So, she doesn't. But, she also doesn't find a solution to the problem of that accurate Woodley jab. Instead, Shailene shows all and sundry just why she's been considered such a hot prospect. She totally controls one of the best bantams on the planet, and, at the bell, has taken the round wide to extend her lead to 39-37 after four.

ROUND FIVE:

Shailene back to that jab, but, now Lilly's made a change. She's gone into a half crouch and tucked the head. Now, she can pick off jabs and get inside. Not all the time, but some of the time. When she can't? Still Woodley scoring, but, when she can, Vangie steps to, works body, and scores upstairs as well. This leads to a good, two-way first half. Until. BOOM! Right uppie, EVANGELINE and Shailene is HURT! Woodley stumblin', rumblin', fumblin', somehow managing to stay on her feet and cover up as Lilly begins calling in artillery strike after artillery strike. Younger brunette quickly buffeted back into the ropes, where Vangie opens up even further, winging away with both hands looking to end this thing. Shailene manages to hang on until the bell rings, but, when it does, Lilly's taken it wide and cut the lead again, this time to 48-47.

ROUND SIX:

Lilly on a mission. She's walking a wobbly Shailene down, backing her up with hard right hands, stepping to, working body, then backing the younger woman up again. Woodley trying to hold canvas, working to stay off the ropes, but, slowly, Evangeline works her back there, pins her to the cables, and, again, calls in the artillery. Woodley in a high guard, taking a ton of shot. She's firing back here and there, doing enough to make sure the referee doesn't get any ideas. BOOM! Right hook, Vangie and DOWN GOES SHAILENE! Woodley's legs lock up and the younger woman crashes past Lilly's left shoulder to drop to the canvas like a ton of bricks! Evangeline quickly to a neutral corner, but she needn't have rushed. No movement at ALL from Shailene as the count passes her by. It's OVER. And your winner by KO6 is Evangeline Lilly!

AFTER:

Lilly a little scuffed, but clearly pleased with how things went. "She's good, like I said," the Canadian says with a smile. "One of these days, she'll wear gold. But. Not quite yet. I, on the other hand, plan to put those belts back around my waist very, very soon."
