Before: The Late 1950’s was a time of change in Hollywood and for celebrity boxing based there. The studios who had largely controlled the sport through their contract players were under pressure from television. The Day of the Contract Player was coming to an end, but this would not actually happen until the 1960’s. Still, the number of contract players was declining, but the interest in celebrity boxing remained strong.

This was a situation that was made for order for independent promoters, especially ones with a “saleable” gimmick to hook potential paying customers. Many of these promotions have been lost to the sometimes murky history of celebrity boxing. However, recently one such fight has surfaced in a private collection that has been added to the FCBA Historical Library & Archives.

The promotion featured actresses from 1950’s era Science Fiction films, officially known as “Sci Queens in Action”. The fight we present here was between Julie Adams (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) vs Allison Hayes (ATTACK OF THE FIFTY FOOT WOMAN). According notes included with the film, Julie Adams though giving up two inches in height, was feeling confident because she come off wins over Faith Domergue (THIS ISLAND EARTH) and Lori Nelson (REVENGE OF THE CREATURE). On the other hand the blonde (sometimes) Allison Hayes was feeling especially confident having defeated 5’9 veteran B-movie veteran Marie Windsor (CAT WOMEN OF THE MOON/ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE MUMMY). The fight was filmed apparently for later resale to TV and theatres. Hopefully more copies in the series will turn up.

For this one, the local was a medium sided arena in the Los Angeles arena and appear to have been filled with enthusiastic fans. There is even a pre-fight interview with the two fighters who are standing there in robes open to reveal their one piece swimsuits. The film is black and white, but notes confirm Julie Adams is in white and Allison Hayes in black).

“After Faith Domergue and Lori Nelson, I am ready for Allison,” said Julie Adams. “The question is: is she ready for me?”

Allison gives Julie a disdainful look: “So she’s beat a couple of creampuffs. I beat Marie Windsor. Now there is a tough opponent. She went down—so will Adams.”

Now it is Julie’s turn to look disdainful: “You got lucky against Windsor. Your luck runs out with me!”

The tension grows and the two women start bodying up on each other. The interviewer starts looking nervous and says: “Now ladies, save it for the ring.”

“Oh don’t worry,” Julie snaps, “I have plenty left for her.”

“I do too!” says Allison.

The film cuts to the ring. We see Julie and Allison have their ponytails. Julie has black boots and gloves. Allison has white gloves and boots. The referee gives instructions and then dispatches the fighters to their corners. The bell rings.

R1: Julie Adams striking first with quick hooks to Allison’s stomach and then up to smack her in the chin. Allison put on her heels and tries to jab the brunette back. Julie crouching down and firing up at the slightly taller Allison. Allison’s breasts taking some nasty smacks. Allison lunges at Julie trying to get at the brunette’s chest. Julie clips the blonde with rights and lefts to the jaw, driving her back. Julie now moves forward, pushing Allison back steadily, but she can’t quite get her on the ropes. Round ends and Julie Adams has won it wide.

R2: Allison Hayes came out punching hard to Julie’s body to get things going in R2. Now it was Julie’s turn to have to give ground as punches slammed home. Then Julie managed to rally with a jabbing flurry into the blonde’s face. Allison’s attack stalled and Julie started forward again striking Allison’s breasts. Allison then brought a strong hook into Julie’s belly doubling her up and leaving her own breasts hanging there, vulnerable to raking rights and lefts, Julie fell back but quickly rallied. She and Allison were now going to the head with their punches. Ponytails were dancing from the impacts. Then Allison went to the belly again and Julie was thrown back doubled over as she gasped for air. Allison was just moving into pursuit when the bell sounded and the ring ended. Allison Hayes had taken a hard-punching round.

R3: Allison seems eager to get back at Julie, perhaps a little too fast, as she rushes in and promptly takes a whacking right to the jaw. Allison goes spinning off to one side with Julie scurrying after in hot pursuit. Julie catches up with Allison, who has her gloves up high to protect her head, and so Julie goes back to pounding away at Allison to the body. Allison trying to push back with the jab, but it’s not slowing. Julie now looking to herd the shell-shocked Allison into the ropes. This gets some strong counters from Allison, but Julie digging away, trying to force the blonde back step by step. Allison manages to keep off the strands but she looks shaky at the bell. Her whole body must be ringing from all the punches Julie Adams sent against it.

R4: Julie right back at Allison, but this time she isn’t able to land the head shot that would leave the blonde dazed and vulnerable. Instead, Julie has to try to cut off the ring and punch Allison into the strands. Allison showing stronger counters this time. She is striking back at Julie to stomach, ribs and chest. Julie gritting her mouthpiece tightly as she tries to use sheer punching power and will to move Allison back. Allison conducting a good delaying action. Julie suddenly goes to the chin with an uppercut and it hits home hard. Allison shudders and Julie finally pounds her body onto the ropes. Allison taking a seat and trying to cover up. Julie just getting started when the bell rings. Julie stomps her boot in frustration. Allison gives her a bleary smile as she slowly leaves the ropes. Julie wins the round but it was a lot closer this time.

R5: Julie moves quickly to get back at Allison, but the blonde moves even more quickly. Allison brings a slicing right into Julie’s jaw. Then a slicing left into the opposite side. Julie goes wobbly and staggers back. Allison snapping quick shots into the brunette’s chin to keep Julie in retreat. Julie gets her gloves up to protect her face, but now Allison free to gives Julie’s body a solid scrubbing and she does just that. Julie, under heavy shelling to breasts, ribs and deep into her belly, falls back into the ropes. Allison goes pounds away as the crowd roars and Julie Adams has to huddle there and try to survive the storm. Bell sounds and only then does Julie Adams slide down to her knees, one arm steadying herself against the rope. Allison standing behind her, gloved hands on hips, with a big smile on her face. Julie hauls herself back up and trudges to her corner. Allison strutting to her stool, she knows she won this round wide.

R6: Julie Adams slumped wearily on her stool during the break Allison sitting alertly on her stool and keeping a hungry eye on the battered brunette. Bell sounds and Julie lurches to her feet. Allison jumping to her feet, pounds her mitts together and heads for Julie. Julie trying to just keep a tight defense and gain some recovery time this round. Allison not about to let her get away with this tactic, She is all over Julie, firing at her sides, then straight up the middle and then bouncing shits off the sides of Julie’s head to keep her brain ringing. Julie struggling to stay as far away as she can from the rampaging blonde, but Allison is relentless in her pursuit. Julie finally cut off and driven into the ropes for another beating. Julie just keeping up until the bell rings. Julie manages to stay on her feet as she wobbles back to her corner, but she is a sad sight. Allison looking well-pleased as she’s won this round in a shutout.

R7: Julie Adams is in big trouble after being hit hard in two consecutive rounds. Corner crew is working hard to revive her. Trainer likely telling her she’s got to show some fight in this round or it’s likely to be stopped. That prospect seems to give Julie new spirit and she comes out with a fresh attack. Allison Hayes comes out confidently, seemingly expecting to just mop up Julie Adams in this round. Then Julie bursts upon her with a crunching left uppercut to the chin and follow-up right to the jaw. Allison now floundering back and trying paw the on-coming Julie with a weak jab. Julie smashing away at Allison to the face and head, Allison ducks to one side and Julie has to scramble to pursue. Allison at mid-ring, gloves up around her face as Julie arrives to start hammering at those tempting breasts once again. Allison moving around, forcing Julie to lunge at her, and when she does this once too often—Allison Hayes strikes back! Out flashes the right to explode on Julie Adams’ chin and then in crashes a matching lft to the chin. Julie stiffens and Allison adds a right to the side of the head. DOWN GOES JULIE ADAMS! Brunette crashes onto her side and then rolls onto her face, arms at her sides, cheek resting against the canvas as her mouthpiece dripples out. Allison goes to neutral corner to watch with a big grin on her face as the referee counts over a barely moving Julie.

“SEVEN!...EIGHT!...NINE!...TEN!...YER….OUTTTTTT!!!”

The winner: Allison defeats Julie Adams KO7!

After: Allison walks the ring, arms up-raised in victory and then walks over to where Julie Adams is trying to rise. Allison puts a boot on Julie’s butt and forces her down to pose for the cameras.

“I told you I would beat that stuck-up brunette and I did!” Allison tells interviewer after the bout. “She’s got nothing as far as I’m concerned! I’m a winner and she’s a loser!”

A bruised and battered, but defiant Julie Adams tells interviewer: “I got sloppy. I was beating her in the 7th and she took advantage. She’s not as good as she thinks she is. I’m just sorry I couldn’t prove it tonight!”

Allison and Julie’s careers moved to television in the early sixties. Reportedly they fought several times, results not yet confirmed. It is also known that by the 70’s Allison and Julie were among the first to try to organize and train stables of young celebrity fighters. The search goes on for more information about this all-too-hazy period in celebrity boxing history.
