Julie Adams versus Martha Hyer (Retro)
(Words: GBS / Results: Lookout!)

Circa 1954

Two of the hardest working TV/movie starlets of the 1950's clashed in this fight. Julie Adams and Martha Hyer will be boxing today.

Julie was just coming off of a ninth round knockout of Gloria Talbott. This was the first of many bouts between these two until Talbott’s retirement in the late 60s or early 70s, records are unclear on it.

Martha meanwhile was coming into her fourth bout. Her previous one had ended for her in the fifth round on the canvas against Audrey Hepburn.

This bout is being held out in the gardens of a massive estate in the Hollywood Hills. The two boxers are coming out of the mansion now as they walk to and enter the ring.

Julie is in her white one piece from 'Creature' and brown gloves.

Martha wore a sleek black one piece with a high cut neck and brown gloves.

Round 1:

The boxers circled to open the bout and the early punches were short jabs. Those led to hooks and crosses by each of the boxers as they went to work the body. Julie surprised Martha and fight fans with her turning over of punches to Hyer’s face with uppercuts. Martha had to scrap back but found Julie to be stronger. Adams won a close round.

Round 2 & 3:

Both boxers came out raking each other’s bodies with heavy hooks in the second round. Martha appeared to be quicker with them as she was moving Julie back. Hyer was soon bouncing shots off Adams’ face and jaw. Hyer seemed to be more in control all though the round was still competitive. But Hyer won the round widely. Martha came out fast the next round and cornered Julie. Soon Hyer was piling on the punches. Julie covered up and tried to slide along the ropes but was blocked by Hyer and her gloved fists. Finally she has to clinch up to escape Hyer. After the clinch is broken, Julie gets back to center of the ring. She spends the rest of the round trying to stick and move. Again Hyer won the round widely.

Round 4:

Adams came out and surprised Hyer with right and left straight punches. Shortly Martha was moving back as Julie was the one now bouncing punches off her face. Hyer eats a couple uppercuts that have her against the ropes. Julie goes to pour it on and is soon sending shots to Hyer’s ribs and gut. Martha had to clinch but Adams breaks it with shaking her arms loose. Hyer tries to circle and move which she does to survive this round. But she is shaken as she returns to her corner after the bell rings. Julie wins the round widely.

Round 5:

Hyer comes out trying to jab and cross away at Adams. But Julie rolls with the punches and soon is hooking into Hyer’s breasts. Martha moans as her breasts take some hard punches. Then Adams catches her with a great right uppercut that makes Hyer wobbly. Julie goes back to Martha’s gut and throws 2 more hard straights. Then her face gets back to back hooks that knock her to the ropes. Son Martha gets more leather hitting her before 2 more hooks to her chin PUT HYER DOWN! Adams watches before she moves to a neutral corner. Hyer was slumped against the canvas as the count began. By the count of 8 she was on her knees. She would get no farther. KO 5 - Julie Adams.

After:

Julie comes out and celebrates her knockout with plenty of poses and motions to the fans. She comes to center of the ring and has her right glove raised.

Hyer was sitting in her corner by the time of the glove raising.

Both would box into the early 1970s. There are rumors of rematches and we at the FCBA Historical Library look forward to locating and presenting those.
