Michelle Williams vs. Brec Bassinger
BEFORE:
Contrast in experience is just one of about a thousand storylines at work here with Mishy having only 220 more fights to her credit than Brec. Williams is coming off a disappointing loss to Lowndes, while Brec's last outing resulted in her first FCBA defeat, to Danielle Campbell. Also stirring the pot is the fact that Bassinger finished her 2019 campaign by jamming a thorne into the Consortium's side with a fifth-round KO of Mila Kunis. So. Yeah. Stuff's going on here, but if Brec's thought about that, she isn't letting on. "This is all about me tonight," the brunette says. "If I fight my fight, I win. It's as simple as that."
"That's cute," says the Hall of Famer with a smirk. "Not that she thinks she's going to win, but that she thinks ANY of this is about HER."
ROUND ONE:
Brec wasting no time getting after the more-experienced blonde. She's not going to play the game she did against Kunis, trying to box with. Instead, she's forward, walking through a surprised Mishy's defenses and taking the fight to her. Brec's always been aggressive, and that aggression is serving her well now, as she's got the Hall of Famer on the back foot early. Williams tossed onto the defensive, spending a lot of time backing and covering, as the younger woman scores points with both hands, landing solid shot to both head and body. Michelle looking a little grumpy, put out of her game as the Texan gets stronger and more confident as the round goes on. Final seconds see a stirring flurry from Brec, who snaps Mishy's head back with a right hand at the bell. Bassinger. Wide. And up 10-9.
ROUND TWO:
Brec rolling early. She's got something going, and she's doubling down on it. Forward, forward, forward. While, for Mishy, it's retreat, retreat, retreat. Williams, though, has been around this burg for awhile. Name just about any contingency that can arise in a ring and Michelle has dealt with it. A dozen times or more. And, she deals with this one. Slowly. But, she deals with it. She's starts getting her left hand on consistently, slowing the brunette's forward pressure. From there, Michelle solidifies her front and then begins getting her own offense going instead of just scoring in the counter. By late in the round, Williams is creating the terms she wants, ranged boxing. And, those are NOT good terms for Brec. When the bell rings, Michelle is in control, but it's too late to overcome Bassinger's early round work. Brec narrowly takes the points to lead 20-18.
ROUND THREE:
Michelle jabbing at range. Brec angling to work past said jab, get inside, get physical. Brunette manages to do some of that, and makes hay when she does, banging body, committing on punches to the head. Mishy, meanwhile, keeps these exchanges as short as possible, working back to the distance she wants so that she can get her box on. Result of all this is the first truly two-way round of the bout with each fighter getting work done on her own terms and neither able to take control of things. The back and forth continues from bell to bell, and there's not much in it late when both fighters get busy and try to steal the points with flurries in the final seconds. When the dust clears and the sweat stops flying, it's very, very close, but Mishy's grabbed her first round of the evening and cut Bassinger's lead to 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Mishy working the jab early, keeping Brec at bay. Bassinger trying to angle forward, but Michelle has the geometry down now, and she's got everything working. She's keeping the younger woman off, leaving her hanging out on the edge of Williams' punches, which is, obviously, not where the Texan wants to be. Brec works hard trying to change the geometry, but she can't get it done. Instead, Michelle piles up points, landing solid combination after solid combination while Bassinger's unable to get much going offensively. Late in the round, Michelle ups the ante, walking forward behind the jab, backing up the brunette, punishing her with hard right hands. Brec counters in spots, but that's all she can get done. At the bell, there's no doubt it's Michelle wide and we're even at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Michelle in command. She's giving the brunette a boxing lesson, keeping her at bay, punishing her with hard shot here and there, but mostly just piling up points and completely frustrating the younger fighter. This is the kind of demoralizing stuff Michelle Williams can do to even good, veteran fighters, so, pity poor Brec, in her sixth FCBA fight, trying desperately to find answers while Michelle keeps changing the questions. BOOM! Brec finds an answer! She slips a jab, steps forward and ROCKS MISHY WITH A RIGHT HAND! Williams all wobbly butt! Brec all IN winging away with both hands and DOWN GOES MICHELLE! Williams dropped by a blizzard of punches and the crowd going nuts as Bassinger heads to a neutral corner. Mishy down on her back, looking like she might be finished. But, no. She's up at eight and taking the mandatory and ON COMES BREC! Bassinger all OVER Williams, but there are only 30 seconds left. Michelle spends them being punished on the ropes, but she hangs on and makes it to the bell. Brec takes the round 10-8 and leads 48-46.
ROUND SIX:
Mishy backed to the ropes early, high guard, playing peek-a-boo and countering. Brec aggressively firing away trying to finish this thing, but she's too aggressive. Michelle blocking, slipping, taking advantage of misses with sharp counters. BOOM! Michelle lands a right hand and HURTS BASSINGER! Mishy exploding off the ropes, driving Brec before her with flurry after flurry of hard, accurate shot. Bassinger reeling, finally brought to rest against the cables where Michelle ravages her to head and body with tons of hard leather. Ref watching closely as the Texan covers up, tries to hang on. Williams clinical, punishing every legal part of her rival, getting off lusty as she looks to end things. Doesn't happen. Somehow, Brec is able to stay on her feet and do enough to keep the ref at bay. But. When the bell rings, Mishy has it wide and cuts the lead to 57-56.
ROUND SEVEN:
Michelle clinically looking to finish. Brec still wobbly and Williams knows it. She's working the younger woman backward, using the jab to set up hard right hands. Brunette giving ground, playing defense, jabbing back in spots, playing for a little time here. But, Mishy's not going to give that to her. Instead, Williams pressuring steadily, landing shot to both head and body, keeping the Texan going backward, punishing her at every opportunity. Brunette doing well to stay off the ropes, but that and staying on her feet is about all she's accomplishing. Then. BOOM! Right hook MISHY, and DOWN GOES BASSINGER! Brec puddling at Michelle's feet after a nasty head swivel. Williams to a neutral corner, but the rest is academic. Brunette face down on the canvas unmoving as the count passes her by. It's OVER! And your winner by KO7 is Michelle Williams! |
