Adrianne Palicki needs no introduction – the Chin Checker has been a force to be reckoned with since 2008, claiming the lightweight title twice and the welterweight title once, making her one of the few members to the elite club of champions at multiple weights. Opposing her is Karen Gillan – a somewhat inexperienced fighter who got a new lease on life when Fates bought out her contract from Lookout Atlantic – but she’s under a lot of pressure to get some high profile wins. Fates cut Behati Prinsloo, a top ten welter to take on Gillan, and Prinsloo embarrassed Fates’ other welterweight, Ana Beatriz Barros, on the beach last week. While Gillan isn’t facing Prinsloo, a win against Palicki would go a long way in making it look like Fates made the right choice.

Before the fight, Palicki is candid about Gillan’s situation and fighting her, “Well, I don’t think that you can really criticize Fates for his roster moves, I mean, they all worked, right? Taylor Swift was an amazing pickup and set the record for title defenses. Emily DiDonato took down Taylor and continued the Fates reign. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s been looking good and has a title shot tonight. Katherine McNamara has been making a name for herself along with Brie Larson. Elizabeth Olsen has come back to the forefront of the bantamweight division and may be the number one contender after tonight. I mean, Fates has an eye for talent, and he saw something in Gillan. I’m just going to have to show that I am better.”

Karen’s obviously nervous, but confident when talking to the press, “Adrianne has made a name for herself in the FCBA over the past 12 years in a stunning career. She’s going to be a tough opponent. But I am going to do my darndest to win. I know there’s been a lot of talk lately about whether or not taking me on by ditching Behati was the right choice. I hope to vindicate Fates tonight.”

Gillan is the first girl to make her way onto the beach, wearing a white bikini with matching white gloves and black trim and accompanied by Ana Beatriz Barros of Fates. Karen paces the ring as Adrianne Palick makes her way towards the ring, wearing a dark red bikini with black gloves. Palicki eases herself into the ring and the two girls touch gloves, the two 5’11” actresses staring at each other at eye level, something they aren’t used to. The two back off and the bell rings, and off we go for ten rounds of welterweight action!

Round 1:

Both girls get out of their corners cautiously, both knowing that they’re roughly the same height and have the same reach. Gillan is the first one to really commit to some offense, quickly closing the distance between the two girls and splitting Palicki’s guard with a left. Karen shifts right and slides in a right to Adrianne’s chin, forcing the veteran to give up ground. Palicki takes a small step backwards and the Chin-Checker has to protect herself as Gillan unleashes a barrage of ranged blows, some of which bounce harmlessly off of Palicki’s guard while others dig into Palicki’s body as Gillan shifts her focus away from Adrianne’s head. But the Chin-Checker hasn’t gotten several title reigns without having some resilience – Palicki works a left into Gillan’s shoulder and then flows that into a right jab that skips off of Karen’s ear. Both girls back off from each other and the bell rings just as they seem to be willing to go back after each other. The first round goes to the redhead on points, wide.

Round 2:

Palicki hearing it in the Sceej corner after the first, and whatever was said seems to have had an impact as Adrianne takes the fight to the lanky redhead early on, quickly landing a solid right to her chin. Gillan staggers backwards, clearly affected by the blow, but the Avenger quickly gets her feet under her, plants, and fires off a jab of her own that catches Palicki just below her right eye. Palicki drops backwards and the two welters start circling each other as the pace settles down. The Chin Checker looks to regain the upper hand that she had earlier in the round with a slew of jabs that Gillan initially absorbs with her guard, but Adrianne steps up and smashes two jabs through to Karen’s face, again knocking the redhead backwards as she swings wildly and connects with a lucky wild punch that makes Adrianne think better of chasing after the younger girl. The two resume circling each other and the bell rings, sending both girls back to their corners. Palicki gets back into the fight, taking the round, close.

Round 3:

The third round starts with more circling as the two girls start playing the ranged game, each hitting jabs into their opponent’s guard until Karen changes tactics, stepping forward and faking a high right before going to her left and sticking Adrianne in her ribs. Palicki quick on the counterpunch, getting the redhead in her nose, but Gillan trades right back, tagging the fabled Chin-Checker in her chin. Both girls briefly start circling again before they start trading nearly evenly, with each blow by one actress matched by the other. Adrianne lands a left hook that catches Karen by surprise and works the Scottish girl backwards with two follow-on blows, but Gillan blocks the second and punches Palicki twice in her mouth, knocking the older actress backwards and then working around her guard, working in body shots on her opponent before Palicki wards Gillan off with a right, forcing the two to circle until the bell rings.

Round 4:

Fates is animated in with Gillan in the corner, as the redhead nods her head as she shoves her gumshield back in and rises for the fourth round. Karen bounces out of her corner and starts sticking and moving, keeping Adrianne on her toes as the younger girl keeps on changing directions, never sticking in one place as she connects with two jabs to Palicki’s chin before backing off, nearly daring her to try and keep up with the action-hero actress. Palicki just keeps her guard up and yields ground gracefully, being worked back into the ropes but never being pummeled, and the Chin Checker starts to find her jab again, as Karen briefly gets Adrianne into the ropes. Gillan quickly backs off to prevent Palicki from landing more jabs, and the girls start to circle again, though Karen gets the upper hand early with a left feint that fakes out Adrianne and opens up the actress to a right cross that drops her backwards. The bell rings and Karen can’t get any more, but she takes the round, wide.

Round 5:

Now it’s Palicki who’s hearing it from her staff, and it’s pretty clear that the underlying message is that she’s much more experienced than Gillan and shouldn’t be letting the redhead chase her around the ring. Gillan yet again comes out of her corner with a full head of steam and puts her speed to good use early, picking up where she left off by sticking and moving, working Palicki backwards, but this time, Adrianne lands her counters, sticking Karen in her mouth and knocking the Scottish actress backwards, and the actress from Ohio slams a right into Gillan’s chin, and the redhead stumbles backwards and on comes Palicki! The Chin-Checker living up to her name as she turns the tide of the fight and quickly works the Avenger into the ropes, pummeling the redhead’s body as the leggy actress backtracks into the ropes, where Adrianne keeps her with a flurry of rights and lefts until the bell rings and saves Karen from a further beating. Palicki gets back into the fight by winning the round, wide.

Round 6:

Adrianne seemingly hit her stride as she ended the fifth and the sixth starts up no differently as Palicki goes right back to bullying the lanky Gillan around the ring thanks to her power advantage. Adrianne lines up two great jabs into Karen’s face, snapping the redhead’s head backwards and her arms flare out a bit, allowing Palicki to place another two blows into Gillan’s face. Gillan quickly gets herself out of Palicki’s range with her long legs and resets, starting to circle again, and Palicki obliges. Adrianne still making the aggressive moves, quickly stepping up and launching a pair of blows, but Karen parries the two and connects with a straight right to Adrianne’s left cheek, knocking the actress off balance and then quickly following up with a jab to the nose, knocking Palicki backwards. Now it’s Karen who’s chasing after Adrianne, and she gets some good shots in, but Palicki plants her feet and the two girls start trading evenly as the bell rings. The two welters fight to a draw in the sixth, and this one may go the distance.

Round 7:

Both tall girls showing that they well be evenly matched as the seventh round begins, and we’re back to circling as neither girl wants to get over-aggressive. The younger Gillan is the first one to start looking for offense, stepping up and firing off a pair of straights into Palicki’s guard before backing off. The two girls continue shifting to their right, slowly making their way around the ring, and Gillan steps up again – and Palicki drills her chin with a right and Karen has a blank look on her face! Adrianne steps forward and drills another two blows into Karen’s chin as the redhead brings her arms back to protect herself too late, and down goes Gillan! Palicki quickly retreats as the referee starts counting. Gillan props herself up on her arms, shaking her head as she gets to all fours. Karen looks at the ref as he counts out “seven” and the actress pushes herself up as he counts out “nine.” He checks in on the redhead, and seemingly satisfied with her response, and the match continues.

Palick steps up and dodges a sluggish right from Gillan and the Chin-Checker smashes a right into Gillan’s nose, knocking her backwards and crashing in a left cross that sends Karen into the ropes and Palicki is unloading on a turtling Gillan! Karen just covering up and not fighting back, getting pummeled into the ropes and her guard starts to drop AND THE REF STEPS IN! Karen’s unsteady on her feet as the ref peels away Palicki, and your winner by TKO7, the Chin Checker, Adrianne Palicki!

After:

Palicki triumphantly raises her arms as she goes back to the Sceej corner to get her gloves off before waving to the crowd. Gillan meanwhile looks drained as Ana Beatriz Barros helps the shaky actress to her stool. Adrianne goes over to check in on Karen before the Chin Checker leaves the ring to talk to the press.

“I said that I was just going to have to show that I was better than Gillan. I did that,” Palicki declares triumphantly. “And at 37, I’m not done taking names. So anyone who wants me, I have a message for you: come get me.” And with that, Palicki heads out, notching another impressive win to her storied career so far.

On the other side, Gillan’s eyes are visibly red when she talks to the press, taking her time before speaking. “Obviously it’s been a tough past several weeks for us Fates welters. Back-to-back losses for me, Ana falling to Behati.” Karen sighs, “And I know a lot of people are questioning if adding me was the right choice. The only way to prove that is for me to win.” Gillan stands up and leaves the press to ask their questions without receiving a response. Whether or not they get answers soon is something that remains to be seen.
