Meg Donnelly
(20 / 5’3” / 6:3 FCBA / Front Street Boxing)
Elyse Willems
(34 / 5’3” / 4:5 FCBA / The Comediennes)
Story: The Comediennes / Results: Lookout!
Pre-fight:
A very tense locker room for both girls. There are rumors swirling around these two about a fight that may or may not have happened. Both stables have viciously denied the rumors, however their eagerness to put the two in the ring have led to some conspiracy theories. Could the story have been made up to try to add some hype to the bout? Or did Meg and Elyse really throw down in the backroom of a bar? The jury is definitely out on that fight. Some clarity is needed for this one.
“Front Street girls don’t talk about anything that happens outside of the ring,” says Meg. “So you won’t hear a peep out of me. I have a job to do. Go out and win. She’s shown some decent power now and then, ending fights early, but I have to believe my mobility and stamina will be too much for her.”
“Only fight I’m concerned about is the one tonight,” says an equally focused Elyse. “She’s won five straight. We have a common opponent in Chloe, so I’ve been studying that tape the most. She probably did the same with me. Though that Saldana tape caught my eye…”
R1: The two boxers come out of their respective rings. Elyse with red Canadian flag shorts and gloves, Meg with pale indigo gloves and shorts. They surprisingly touch gloves and the fight is on.
The two fighters circle each other for the first minute. They throw some jabs here and there, neither one of them getting in a good position. Elyse can’t move like Meg so she’s taken a different look to her tonight. She’s squatting a little bit further down than normal and keeping that left hand out. It’s good enough to put up a wall as Meg steps in trying to find room. She can’t get anything clean and Elyse skirts away.
Meg follows, getting a little anxious. She tosses a right that misses and Elyse follows up with a beautiful counter-punch attack. Two left jabs right on the nose. Meg needs to cover up, but she doesn’t retreat. Elyse comes in closer, that left hand drifting still drifting out between her and Meg. Meg tries to get around it but all she does is eat a right hand from Elyse. Meg can’t move out of the way quick enough and Elyse’s jab really works early here. She nails the Front Street girl a few more times.
Elyse’s new defensive stance is giving Meg fits early. She lands a few grazing jabs, but nothing Elyse can’t handle. The Canadian comes through with a nice flurry in the center of the ring that leaves Meg’s hair in a spindly mess. The bell rings and Elyse has taken round one wide.
10-9 Willems.
R2: Meg comes out of her corner a little more aggressive. She decides to simply walk through Elyse’s defenses. She takes a few hard rights to the chin, but the younger boxer isn’t deterred. She walks right through Elyse and starts throwing her hands.
It works like a charm.
She gets Elyse with a right-left combo on the chin that dazes the older fighter. Whatever her trainers told her to switch up works like a charm. Elyse tries to counter punch, but Meg is just absorbing the blows and throwing hers back. The Comedienne is clearly taken off guard.
Meg walks Elyse back into the corner and all of a sudden the older woman is in trouble. She takes two heavy uppercuts to the abdomen that cause her to lean forward and pull Meg into a clinch. Elyse’s mouth hangs open as she tries to push her opponent back. It works well enough before the ref forces them apart.
Elyse tries to get her distance, but Meg has the superior agility. She’s on the Comedienne, who now is forced to cover up. Meg can’t quite break through Elyse’s defenses but she doesn’t have to to secure the round.
The bell rings and Meg walks away with a wide round of her own.
We’re tied up 19-19.
R3: Donnelly comes out fast again, but Elyse has shifted into her southpaw stance. It’s not something Meg quite knows how to deal with early in the round. Elyse goes on the attack. Her right jab nails Meg as the Front Street girl tries to use her mobility to skirt around the ring. Elyse sticks to her though and nails her with a solid left cross.
Meg stumbles back and Elyse comes in. She throws an uppercut to Meg’s jaw. The crowd is on their feet! The younger girl’s head snaps back as her feet scuffle backwards. Elyse is coming in for the kill. A big left hook knocks Meg to the ropes. She catches herself as Elyse buries a right into the ribs.
The younger girl’s eyes widen in agony. Elyse stands her up and knocks the Front Street girl back towards the corner with a straight left. The Comedienne comes in, ready to put an end to the pesky Donnelly.
All of a sudden though Meg throws a right-handed uppercut that nails Elyse clean on the chin. Shades of her stablemate Billie Eilish with that blow! It doesn’t knock Elyse down, but it puts an end to her knockout window. Now it’s Meg who presses the attack. Without the power Eilish has though, she has to settle for knocking Elyse around the ring like a piñata.
Meg schools Elyse all around the ring, but is lacking the power to finish her off. As the bell rings Elyse is left hanging over the top rope, gulping in as much air as she can get. It was a fiery round with plenty of blows, but Meg squeaks it out with a late offensive attack.
29-28 Donnelly.
R4: Once again there’s an offensive explosion, but this time it happens center ring. The two fighters are trading heavy blows back and forth as if they were Welterweights, not Flyweights.
Not much flying going on in the ring except for fists. Both girls stand toe-to-toe and just beat the crap out of each other. Elyse’s uppercut is working nicely, but not enough to knock Meg down. Meg is going for the body, trying to break her older opponent’s will. Both girls do their damage, but as the round bleeds into the third minute it’s Elyse who gives ground first.
Meg hunts her down, getting her against the ropes once more. Elyse covers up as she takes a full-frontal assault from Meg’s blazingly fast hands. She’s showing why she’s a dangerous contender in the division with the rate in which she’s throwing her punches. Unfortunately for Meg she’s also showing why she isn’t a top ranked fighter yet. Despite her assault, Donnelly can’t put Willems down. And as the bell rings the frustrated Front Street girl goes back to her corner slightly sulking. She’s won 3 straight rounds but doesn’t have a knockdown to show for it.
39-37 Donnelly.
R5: The two fighters come out a little more timid this round. Each one of them is feeling the effects of the other girl’s offensive abilities. And they both have a lot of offensive abilities.
As the sluggish round wears on though, it’s the battered Elyse who begins to make up ground. Meg gets sloppy, letting Elyse (who has switched back to an orthodox stance) slip in that pesky left jab. With Meg’s hands drifting down lower and lower, Elyse finds her openings and takes her shots when possible.
Meg doesn’t get run over though. There’s a nice little flurry between the two near Meg’s corner that Meg gets the better of. She’s able to force Elyse back with those quick combos to the body. Elyse’s abdomen is red and soon to be turning different shades of purple and green. Still, she’s taken the punishment well and a nice right hook gives her the boost she needs to take a much needed round.
48-47 Donnelly.
R6: That right hook must have woken Meg up, because she comes out fast to start round 6. She sneaks past Elyse’s defenses and lands a hard right cross on the chin. Elyse is brushed back and soon finds her back in the corner.
Meg has her opportunity now.
She rams her gloves deep into her older opponent’s ribcage. She takes the air right out of Elyse’s lungs. As Elyse begins to double over, Meg lands a brutal uppercut that knocks Elyse backwards. Her head hits the corner.
Meg steps back, watching her opponent as she expects her to slide down. But Elyse catches herself on the top rope.
Elyse’s elbows prop her up but leave her open to Meg, who lights her up with a brutal 1-2 hook combo. Somehow Elyse stays on her feet though. She covers up and pushes shoulder-first into Meg’s chest.
Meg pushes Elyse back into the corner and throws her haymakers. She’s frustrated by how much she’s outboxed Elyse without being able to put her to the mat. And the young fighter makes a huge mistake…
Meg, in her frustration, has punched herself out. Her quick fists turn into slow, labored attacks. Before she can realize it though Elyse shoots an uppercut that nails the younger boxer clean in the chest.
Meg stiffens like a board and then falls backwards onto the canvas. The ref rushes in and puts himself between Elyse and the downed Meg.
Meg’s eyes are glazed over. Her head shakes back and forth. Her lips twitch. It’s an uncontested 10 count and the ref waves his hands in the air.
Winner: Elyse Willems via KO Round 6
Post-fight:
“It’s extremely disappointing,” says a frowning Meg. “I watched a lot of the Chloe fight and this one felt similar. Quicker opponent who couldn’t get the job done. I couldn’t get her down on the canvas so hats off to her. She’s got one hell of a chin. I know Billie mentioned that before how she couldn’t believe some of the shots Elyse was eating. And she had that uppercut working tonight. I just came up a little short.”
“I feel like I can finally smile,” says a grinning Elyse. “It’s been a really rough road for me so far in the FCBA. But Meg is tough as nails, you know? So I just had to out think her. I don’t think any top flyweights would make the same mistakes she made, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. For now it’s a good win against a quality opponent. Maybe I’m just better with the pressure of a Pay-Per-View… who knows?” |
