Marilyn Monroe vs Audrey Hepburn
Circa late in 1957
(Words: GBS/Archer / Results: Lookout!)
“Now this was what Hollywood celebrity boxing should always be about,” commented legendary celeb boxing historian K.O. Kapowski, “two big names going at each other. Though, I will admit, a lot of celebrity fight observers thought this was a mis-match, that Audrey who too ‘fragile’ to last very long against Marilyn. However, a few realized Audrey had roved she was anything but ‘fragile’ and was no pushover.”
“Two of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood will be boxing tonight. Marilyn Monroe will be facing Audrey Hepburn.” Says the voiceover for the film of this fight.
This bout will be held on the beach in front of a big producer’s home. A regulation ring has been erected and around it are seats. Soon the seats are full of VIPs and filled fast. The referee for this bout now walks to the ring. It is Barbara Stanwyck. She is wearing black pants and a striped referee’s shirt. Monroe comes to the ring in her robe and white boots with red laces and white gloves. Once inside she doffs her robe to show her body in a red one piece swinsuit. Always the show, she poses for the cameras. Hepburn then walks to the ring in her robe and has on purple boots with black laces and purple gloves. Between the robes, Audrey’s robe is lowered and then off her. She is wearing a purple and black one piece swimsuit.
After a close first round won by Marilyn the next two rounds were wide ones with both boxers winning a round. Both seemed to use their jabs in the first three rounds which surprised many as Monroe was viewed as the more powerful boxer and would want to get inside on Hepburn. But Audrey surprised the crowd by smacking Monroe’s breasts with some impressive hooks and straights during the second round. Those shots moved Marilyn back and allowed Audrey to advance on her. Audrey’s purple gloves soon were back into Marilyn but now her belly was taking the hooks. Monroe did clinch up, Stanwyck had to come over and break it up. Marilyn did answer with a couple shots to Audrey’s face but Audrey won the round widely.
‘In the third, Monroe went back to Hepburn’s face and a few times seemed to snap her head back. Those shots did cause Audrey to stumble and Marilyn made sure to allow her no punching room. Just before the bell Audrey did get back and hit a nice straight to Monroe’s breasts. But it was nowhere enough as Marilyn took the round widely. The fourth round opened with Hepburn jabbing and crossing at Monroe’s face. Marilyn was surprised and had to back away to defend against Audrey. The crowd watched as Hepburn slipped a long straight from Monroe to light up her chin with a big right uppercut. That shot stunned Marilyn and Audrey went back to her face with back to back straights to that face. Now her head was snapping a complete reversal from the previous round. By the second minute, Audrey hit Marilyn with a right hook to her gut. MONROE GOES DOWN! Stanwyck came over and Audrey went to a neutral corner. The crowd watched as Monroe sat up by the count of 4 and was up by 7. Barbara checks her over before calling the fight back on. Marilyn gets on her toes and boxes out the rest of the round from an arm’s distance. Audrey wins the round widely. The fifth round saw Audrey get stymied by Monroe’s long punches to her ribs and belly. Her defense was slow and Marilyn punched more into her body. Hepburn got her away with a couple hard crosses to the blonde’s face. A quick left cross to her face made Monroe retreat. A brief firefight came next and Audrey was clinched up by Marilyn. Stanwyck had to break them apart and the bout continued. More long jabbing and moving came to end the round. Audrey won a close round.
The sixth round opened with Monroe using those long punches to her great advantage as she got in on Audrey’s belly repeatedly. Marilyn jabbed and clouted Hepburn’s face as she had been hurt by those long punches. A left uppercut and right hook AND HEPBURN GOES DOWN! Stanwyck ushers Monroe to a neutral corner quickly. Then she kneels and begins the count. Audrey is turned over and facing the lights by the count of 4. She is on her elbows by 6. Then she was starting to rise by 9. But it is not to be as Barbara counts 10 and Audrey has not risen fully. The bell rings and the bout ends on that note.
Marilyn comes out of the neutral corner and soon is stopping for the photographers and fight fans.
Audrey is back in her corner as her corner work on her.
Soon Monroe is in the middle of the ring as Stanwyck calls for the microphone. Then Barbara makes the announcement and raises Marilyn’s right glove.
After more pictures, Marilyn goes to Audrey’s corner. She is checking on her opponent and soon the two boxers share a hug. Fight fans love this and cheer this show of sportswomanship and respect.
Marilyn leaves the ring after posing some more.
“So MM won the fight and most of the ‘smart money’ said ‘We told you so!” observed KO Kapowski. “But others argued that Audrey had given Marilyn a lot more trouble than she expected. They wanted to see the rematch, but that wouldn’t come until the next year.” |
