(Results: Lookout!, Words: Caspian)
1. Kimberly Chan vs Vanessa Lee (FCBA Debuts)
Kimberly: (27, 4’11, FCBA Debut, Free Agent, @chankimberly)
Vanessa: (23, 5’1, FCBA Debut, Free Agent, @vannielyz)
BEFORE: We’re of course continuing with our local series of celebrity boxing events, with multiple influencers and celebrities suddenly itching to lace up and competing against one another amidst the monotony of the lockdown.
Tonight, we’re back on the beach for three more fights on the card - a large white tarp provides limited shade for the ring that has been erected in the center. All around, plastic foldable chairs have been set 1 meter apart to respect safe measurement measures. Don’t want anyone falling sick, now do we?
Kimberly Chan is already itching for a try at this boxing thing as she bounces up and down near the ring.
"Everyone seems to be doing it recently, and it's a nice way to keep busy during these trying times. Vanessa's one hell of an athlete and cheerleader - I've seen some of her videos online. Bottomline is the both of us are eager to test ourselves next in the ring," Chan says with a nod.
The Youth Olympic and SEA Diver is looking in fighting-fit shape as she stretches in the corner. Kimberly has partShe's wearing a white and navy striped sports bra, tight red briefs for her bottoms, together with a pair of black gloves.
Her opponent for tonight is a New Balance Ambassador, having sported their brand of running trainers for the past few years. Vanessa Lee is also a Cross Country Track & Field champion and National Athlete, having won numerous awards during her time in school. To top things off, she’s also an avid cheerleader in her university club.
“I’ve met Kimberly a couple of times. Even though we compete in different sports, we have a healthy respect for each other’s abilities. Though, it’s kind of a shame that she’s stopped diving. Nowadays, she’s more of a social media influencer, so I’m not expecting too big of a challenge.”
Vanessa has that confident, cocky look on her face, a wry smile on the side of her mouth as she climbs into her corner and makes ready. The cross-country runner is wearing a simple black sports bra and tight gym shorts, red gloves on either hand.
Referee waves for the bell and HERE WE GO with ten rounds of Flyweight action!
ROUND 1: Couple of spitfires here as the two ladies get their head in the game, circling for a good minute and shadow-boxing in the air without much action. Classic rookie inertia as they’ve probably never been punched in the face in their lives, don’t relish the feeling of leather getting shoved in for the first time. Still, it’s the older Chan who initiates the first flurry, a one-two combo landing clean on Vanessa’s face, making her wince. Lee tries to retaliate but she’s out of range again, as Chan goes for hit-and-run tactics, moving in to smash another combo into the face before diving back out to cover. Lee is still finding her bearings when the bell finally sounds, giving Chan the deciding wide round.
ROUND 2: Vanessa, however, eager to fight back, shimmying those legs early before letting rip wide combos straight into Kimberly’s arms to disrupt her momentum. Chan, a little smaller, no doubt, but built stockier, finds herself rooted in one spot as Lee pounds away on her arms, the occasional right straight sailing through to stun her on the lips. Girls then test each other’s core resilience as they pepper the body with wide open shots as they get used to the idea of punching high AND low. Kimberly makes a comeback late in the round, landing a nice hook to the side of Vanessa’s head, which throws her off balance as she scoots back dangerously. Chan’s marching forward to capitalise, but the bell rings too soon, stopping the round in her opponent’s favour.
ROUND 3: Lee continues using her speed and agility to run rings around the more immobile Chan, who’s standing quite still in the middle of the ring as the national runner shoves fist after fist into her cheek, then leaps back out of the way of an incoming hook to the face. In terms of stamina, there can be no question as to who’s built for long-distance running, and Chan needs to score a big one early if she wants to compete for another seven rounds. She struggles here to keep up, focusing her arms on protecting her face but Vanessa wisely strikes at her stomach with left-right combos packed into her abs, most of them hitting her chest and arms, but ultimately seeking her face. Round ends and it’s Lee’s best round thus far, as the runner throws up her hands and strides back to her corner.
ROUND 4: Chan flies into action early, taking wide swings as she meets Lee in the middle, hoping to surprise her with a hook swung to her head, another catching her across her tummy. Lee is surprised as hell, having to take evasive maneuvers as she weaves and bounds under the torrent of attacks, jabbing back at Chan’s head only when her corner begins shouting at her as a reminder. Chan, still relentless even as she takes another right hand straight to her lips, POWERS a cross back into Lee’s nostrils to earn her a gurgle and push the leaner girl back a couple of steps. Wild exchanges continue to erupt throughout the rest of the round, ladies clashing between the corners in a flurry of hands exchanged to both body and head, before they opt to retreat to catch their breaths. Rinse, repeat to the end of the round, where the judges surely have a tough time deciding who won overall.
ROUND 5: Kimberly’s power comes into play here, however, as she opts for big attacks compared to Vanessa’s small, hounding tactics. Chan marches straight for the leaner woman then begins to attack her with jab-hook combos, aimed high and low to keep the runner guessing. Lee has every opportunity to run from an outsider’s perspective, but the newcomer keeps finding her space limited, her back hitting the ropes before Chan rocks her guard with a powerful strike down the middle, another hook slammed in to send her packing. Chan is not scoring clean here but maybe she doesn’t need to, using her stockier frame to dictate terms whenever the two ladies meet. Lee hovers at a distance in the last minute, looking shaken and breathing hard, pondering how she’s gonna break this powerful tank headed her way.
ROUND 6: Lee simply lacks power, but kudos to her resolve and determination here. She roars back into action in the sixth, immediately shooting lefts and rights at Kimberly’s head to disrupt her advance early. But Chan has other ideas, keeps her head lowered and behind her arms as she too bangs away once her opponent is in range: a right hook catches Vanessa clean on the tummy, another uppercut swung upwards into the arms, which almost breaks the guard there and then. Lee’s thrown back once more due to her haphazard attack, now on the other end of a counter as Chan whips her face to the side with a dull hook, then CATCHES the poor girl on the chin with a lunging uppercut! AND DOWN VANESSA GOES, the combination of attacks just too much for her at this point as she gets FLATTENED on her back! Some spirit leftover as she tries to raise her head and shoulders from the ground, but it’s no use! Referee counts her all the way out to TEN and waves his arms! It’s over!!
Official Decision: Kimberly Chan defeats Vanessa Lee via KO6!
AFTER: Chan grinning wide as she raises a hand to the crowds. She may not have gone the distance with her diving in the past, but perhaps there’s some future in the boxing ring.
“I didn’t like the way she looked down on me earlier,” Kimberly says to reporters by ring-side. “She’s younger, has more heart, but I showed her why experience is the better trump card. I hope we meet again though.”
Lee, plastered with sweat in the immediate aftermath of the fight, has to be helped to sit up by the ropes as her trainers ask her if she’s alright. She nods, asking for water, before dousing herself in a disappointing debut loss.
“She hits freakin’ hard. I wasn’t expecting that. But still, she’s older than me by a couple of years. Give me a couple more as well and I’ll come back stronger, more determined to win,” Lee says to reporters later, looking crestfallen. |
