Katheryn Winnick (43, 5’4, 120 lbs, 30:15 FCBA, The Dollhouse)
Vs.
Natalie Portman (39, 5’3, 110 lbs, 89:52:2 FCBA, HISC)
Results: Lookout!; Story: Caspian & The Dollhouse
BEFORE: Katheryn Winnick looking relaxed and casual sitting at the press conference table. “Natalie is one of the only FCBA 'greats' I haven't fought yet, so I'm very excited to be getting the opportunity tonight,” Katheryn says first from the press table. “She beat Emma last year but I think I'm going to give her a completely different challenge. I know I'm the underdog tonight, but I like my chances. She already lost twice this year if McNamara and Hale can beat her there's no reason why I can't. And I will."
The Canadian actress looking sensational despite a recent loss to Scarlett Johansson, holding a 2-2 in-ring record for the year so far. Tonight however, Winnick faces arguably the biggest test of her career. And why wouldn’t she be confident coming into this contest, what with Portman usually billed as a Flyweight and entering the press hall slightly shorter and smaller than the blonde. Natalie, of course, accepted this fight knowing full well of the risks of fighting a heavier opponent.
“Maybe Katheryn is getting a bit desperate if she’s gunning for Flyweights these days” Portman says curtly whilst seated from the other end of the table. “But she’s 43, and that’s a problem. I’ve been busy beating young girls like Watson, Moner, and even Roberts - how’s that insufferable b*tch of a stablemate of yours doing, by the way?” Portman smirks, before continuing. “Katheryn is going be a tough challenge I’m sure, she’s quite good, but I don’t think she stands an actual chance. As she said herself, I’m STILL one of the FCBA greats.”
Ladies usually fight in different weight classes, but they’re only about an inch difference in terms of height. Winnick later striding down to the ring in her usual white sports bra and long tights, with black stripes along the rims and matching gloves, her blonde hair tied into a neat ponytail out back. Portman enters along soon after, rocking a black brassiere top and red boxing trunks, complete with a pair of red gloves.
Referee calls for the start of this fight, and gets the nod from both corners. HERE WE GO with ten rounds of Catchweight action!
ROUND 1: Katheryn as usual starts off methodical and calculated, doesn’t want to take any chances with this Hall-of-Famer across from her, as she circles and jabs at Portman’s head. For all her bulk, Winnick not throwing any big punches, at least not yet, allowing Portman to circle in instead and pound on her guard with overconfidence. It’s a smart strategy, with Natalie punching combos into the arms but then getting whammed! back with bigger shots to her own. Kat in this way scores points, landing a crisp one-two off the Consortium fighter’s head, more occasional pounding to the actress’ body as Portman doesn’t realise she’s bleeding points till the final minute (either that, or she’s testing the Doll’s defences on purpose, which might not bode well for her). All in all, the first round ends with Kat raising a hand to the crowds, probably a little surprised this opening round went so swell against someone like Portman.
ROUND 2: Portman shows off some of her true colours, however, as soon as the bell rings: she moves out of her corner with both her arms up, as confident as the first round, as though that wide loss didn’t matter one bit. Kat stays back as usual, but this time, Portman doesn’t come in as keenly to take the blonde’s damage. Instead, Portman uses her (almost) equal reach to jab and prod at Winnick’s face from a distance, scoring plenty more points for herself as the slightly slower Doll struggles to adapt. Nat plays to her strengths, which are her agility and precision, takes apart Winnick’s guard by squeezing one-two jab combos in between the arms, landing shots on the body, chest and chin. Fair play, Winnick thinks, though she doesn’t give up to the end, sudden swings sent back at Portman, which bash her on the body or arms when she least expects it - it’s a way to score some payback for the Doll as she keeps her movements unpredictable to the bell, thereby keeping up with the points somewhat.
ROUND 3: Portman vows to do more, however, making her eager but reckless, just like the first round. The HISC starlet’s doing plenty of experimentation in these opening rounds, mixing up her attacks fast and slow, trying to poke holes in Kat’s defences if this fight is going the distance. Kat’s still holding onto her own power, keeping her guard locked as she moves left and right, conscious of that last round when Portman still managed to get in punches to her head and poke at her face. First minute sees Portman targeting the Doll’s body: the most open and vulnerable spaces available as she lands stiff shots into the tummy. Winnick takes it, and takes it, until she doesn’t! RIPS a right hand off the top of Portman’s head, sending the smaller girl reeling off in stunned silence! Portman tries another attack almost immediately, after thinking her opponent just got lucky with that, but receives yet another stiff blow to the cheek for her efforts. Finally, Winnick finds the confidence to wade in and chase after her opponent, more left-right combos banging into Portman’s arms as the Hollywood actress finally gets pushed back on the defensive. But the bell rings too soon to tell where this fight is headed. One thing’s for sure: Winnick has taken the lead in these three rounds thus far.
ROUND 4: Portman’s back to her conservative stance, staying at a distance and jabbing at Kat’s head like the first. Whilst only one or two inches shorter, that reach disadvantage is still stacking the deck against her. Initially, she struggles to land her combos on Kat’s face, mostly hitting the blonde’s arms and then avoiding a counter-swing back. This goes on for a while as Winnick grows more and more frustrated as well, not being able to score as many shots as she’d like, especially when compared to the first quarter of this fight. Portman shows off her expertise and experience - she’s gotten Kat’s patterns down pat - driving a right cross into the blonde’s nostrils late in the round to stun Winnick out of the blue, then more follow-up combos chasing and landing as Natalie returns to the table with both calculation and poise. Never underestimate a Hall-of-Famer, I guess, as Kat realises with a final grunt, getting stung to the lips in the closing seconds to end the round. Portman back to her loud smirking, looking like an aged bottle of wine as she strides back to her corner.
ROUND 5: A BLAST to the face turns the tables just like that, however, as Winnick suddenly employs some speed of her own and decides to go all-in! Finally! It’s like a dormant giant awakening after getting prodded and poked this entire time, as she skirts the length of the ring at the opening bell, powers in a right hand to the middle of Portman’s arms! Portman barely had time to anticipate that, let alone absorb the blow, lets out a grunt as she gets pushed back on the defensive almost from the very start! Holy-moley! And Katheryn’s NOT letting up, sensing a potential knockdown attempt here as she continues to chase after the battered actress with fast hands, stiff left-right blows landing all over her guard, the blonde trying to break them apart before going in for the killing blow. One or two of such hooks BLAST Natalie off to the side when they land on the side of the actress’ head or body, but for the most part, Portman stays afloat, manages to keep her balance and create more and more distance until the bitter end. A shutout performance from the Doll here, as Winnick takes control of this fight!
ROUND 6: Winnick finds her groove, at least for now, coming forward with greater confidence from before. She tests the waters with an early cross-hand sent in towards Natalie’s head, thinking that that wrecker of a last round must have SURELY done wonders to her foe’s confidence. Not quite. Portman seems bound for a repeat performance of last round, taking another straight hand hard to her arms, till she immediately fires back with one of her own!! UGHH! Winnick blasted to her own face as Portman employs some counter-offensive techniques she’s picked up over the years in the ring! Winnick grunts as more fast punches land in quick succession, her own return swings at Portman’s head not doing any damage if they’re just hitting the air or space in front of the starlet. Good lord - how the turn tables quickly, as it’s Winnick’s to get pushed backwards, Portman staying at a comfortable distance and comfortably landing counter-shots to her face and body! Kat breathing hard, almost driven back into the ropes in desperation as she learns to stay more calm in the final seconds of this fight, stop throwing wanton ammunition at her enemy, who’s just using it to reload her own guns and fire back! Portman returns with a shutout round of her own, once again throwing this fight wide open!
ROUND 7: Katheryn has no choice but to turtle up and hope that her fortunes change going forward. She doesn’t take the same risks as last time or as her opponent did, preferring to stay close to her own corner when the bell rang, and hoping that the almost-40-year-old Portman is at least close to running out of steam herself. Nosiree - we see a tale of two very different fighters as Natalie comes barreling in at her with little care or concern for her own wellbeing, immediately planting leather combos on Winnick’s arms and body as she turns the pressure up to 100 within a couple of seconds. Perhaps the Consortium starlet has every bit of confidence that she has her opponent on the ropes now, or perhaps being in the Hall-of-Fame and an 11-time Flyweight champion is good enough to throw caution to the wind. Winnick takes a straight punch to the chin, which crunches in with enough force to throw her backwards into the ropes. Portman alternating and not letting up, banging a stiff uppercut off the blonde’s tummy before helping herself to another BLAST sent across the blonde’s face. Kat with no answer thus far, trying to get away or use the occasional hook to scare Portman off, to no avail, with the veteran weaving her head and torso about expertly, then using her foe’s momentum to SHOCK the Doll back to the cheek! Finally, an uppercut LANDS hard on Kat’s chin, making her stumble backwards in a daze - Portman steps in and BAM! Poor Katheryn’s eyes roll back into her head as Portman catches her on the temple with a huge right delivering the final shock to her system – the older actress COLLAPSES to her side like a falling tree landing in a heap on the mat with a THUD. WOW! The crowd is stunned as the bigger blonde seems to be OUT COLD, sprawled out on the mat. Cameras zooming in on Katheryn - her eyes closed, arms limp above her head…she’s SLEEPING folks!
Referee pushes a satisfied looking Portman away and takes a quick glance at Winnick before immediately signaling for the bell and waving this fight off! The blonde is clearly unconscious! It’s over in decisive fashion!
Official Decision: Natalie Portman defeats Katheryn Winnick via KO7!
AFTER: A mighty win indeed for Portman, who has fought her share of Catchweight bouts over the past twenty years of her career and it shows as she ends Winnick’s hopes at an upset here with a clear powerful statement of a knockout. She wears a look of relief on her face in the immediate aftermath of the rapid bell, raising a hand high to her fans, then, a self-assured smugness returns as she strides back to her corner to get a debrief from her team.
Meanwhile, Winnick is left in the lurch one more time, another loss in a series of ups-and-downs in the blonde’s neverending climb to the top as Dollhouse medical team rush into the ring to attempt to revive their defeated fighter. A tough loss for the 43 year old who must be respected for challenging herself constantly, but she should also remember that her opponent tonight has had a good fifteen-year headstart in her own boxing career.
Portman herself appears to have changed her tune later in the post-fight comments, grinning and glancing tiredly in Winnick’s direction as she responds to reporters’ questions:
“She put up a great fight. I’ll give her that. If Katheryn had started boxing around the same time I did... Things might have looked completely different tonight. But I’ve been doing this for far too long, and a win’s a win. I'll knock her out every single time she'll step into the ring with me. So with all due respect, I suggest she look for wins somewhere else...”
When asked about her upcoming plans, Portman appears playful in her response. “I think I should be aiming for another title shot. Already managed to knock out Holt once - who says I can’t do it again?” |
