3. Kelly Gale vs Adriana Lima

BEFORE:
“Loose change. She’s nothing but loose change,” Adriana says first at the press conference. “Before the start of the tournament, who had Kelly defeated besides girls like Goulart and Clauson? She has never faced off against someone of my caliber in the ring.”

“We’ve had our surprising share of competitors, like Alessandra,” Gale responds in kind, in a slightly more cordial voice. “No matter how small Adriana thinks of me, she’s gonna find out we’re more similar in style and ability than she realises.”

Short and sweet comments earlier, and we’re back in the arena, ready to welcome Kelly Gale first on stage. There’s a flash of silver light and streamers before the Girls Friday starlet wades through the thick fog machines wearing a mint-green bra top and pink undies for bottoms. There’s this Spanish matador look to the rest of her costume, with matching shoulder pads and a long sheer dress that swooshes and swings by the side of her long legs. Up next, Lima has kept it simple and sweet herself, strutting out of the orange lamplights and parading a long blood-red fur coat behind her. She’s wearing devil-inspired wings on both shoulders, and a matching pair of bra and panties to highlight her sensual figure. Later, once in the ring, she straps on black gloves for this contest, to Kelly’s white.

Referee kicks things off with a wave of his hand, and HERE WE GO with ten rounds of Lightweight action!

ROUND 1:
Kelly is full of energy for a woman fourteen years younger. She makes it known by harassing Adriana’s position with hit-and-run tactics, hammering her arms and pushing her about throughout. Adriana looks sluggish by comparison, mostly staying in one place as the younger fighter flits and jumps all over her position, Kelly shoving her fists into her arms but mostly scoring off the vulnerable tummy. Adriana’s a veteran fighter for good reason, more than used to taking the brunt of an attack and keeping her face well hidden behind closed arms. The Odds and Ends starlet begins to stem the tide only in the final minute, blasting Kelly back on the arms with a wide cross and then picking her off from a safe distance with more jabs landing on the face. Overall, a wide round for Gale, who only began to slip in the closing seconds of this one.

ROUND 2:
Gale doesn’t see the counterattack coming till it hits her full on the face, however, Adriana pretends to be cautious at the bell, only to suddenly send a cross hand in without warning, slamming leather clean into Kelly’s face! Gale lets out a grunt, wincing as her head gets snapped backwards from the impact, and it’s all downhill from there on out. Gale’s movements got pinned down by the veteran fighter and she’s paying the price for it, now getting hounded backwards by Adriana’s precise one-two combos. Gale felt these punishing blows first hand, now moving fast and out of the way, overly cautious and not wanting to eat leather in the same way. Adriana capitalises, keeps the pressure up on the youngster, poking at her tummy and forehead in alternate forays forward to end the round clearly in her favour.

ROUND 3:
Kelly roars in, hoping to break the stalemate, and perhaps on the advice of her own fight team that Lima’s stamina ain’t what it used to be. The two brunettes CLASH repeatedly in the center of the ring, Kelly throwing plenty more punches than her counterpart but not landing as often or clean. Adriana heard grunting as she gets thrown about for the first couple of seconds, her arms locked over her head but still surprised by Gale’s power and determination. Gale lands a couple of shocks to her body and side of the head, one or two hooks powered into the fray, but Lima absorbing easily, then countering with a well-placed hook to the face to send Gale almost bounding into the ropes with a gasp. Lima methodical, crowding close and rocking Gale further to the body, leather just pasted to trembling tummy before the Gale manages to clinch up, circle their bodies around and get out of the line of fire. Not the best round for the Girls Friday starlet but she still took it close by the sound of the bell.

ROUND 4:
Lima stays grounded, however, unfazed by Kelly’s antics as she continues to showcase her power. Gale’s attacks have frustrated but not hurt the veteran fighter, and Lima makes that fact known when she takes a one-two combo to the face but then blasts the younger woman back with a step-in hit to the body, almost folding Gale over in half. Adriana half-smirking, that look of hunger on her face as she tries to pin Kelly down against the ropes or corner. Kelly doing her best to get out of the way, scooting and leaping this way and that while sending jabs towards Adriana’s face, hoping to stop her long enough. But Lima’s relentless, catching Gale with another hook to the body before a right hand slams into the side of her head. Kelly goes spinning down the line, mouth hanging open and holding onto the top rope for support. Lima closes in again to try and finish her off, but the bell rings too soon, and Gale gets away for the umpteenth time.

ROUND 5:
Lima’s attack strategy gets blunted, however, when Gale finds some reserve energy and barrels into the older girl from the get-go, lashing gloves off her tummy and then landing a lucky shot off her forehead to throw her back. Lima looks like she’s in shock for a moment, and it’s more than enough time for Gale to chase after her, hoping to score the upset knockdown. Gale pushing and pushing inwards, fists flying both high and low to pepper Lima all over her frame. Adriana, however, quickly resets her guard and blocks the latter attacks, huffing hard as she takes a final one-two combo to the body before both women reset at opposite corners of the ring. So far, these two clearly want the win, and it shows, but Gale still doesn’t find any fruits of success with Lima still standing by the end of the round. Both ladies think they’ve taken the round here, weary arms being raised on their way back respective corners.

ROUND 6:
It’s either Kelly’s toe-to-toe standing with Lima or it’s Lima’s stamina efficiency for someone her age - that’s the impressive feat so far in this fight, and both ladies do not disappoint, immediately rushing to the center of the ring to throw down at the sound of the bell. As usual, Kelly is exploding forward, throwing lefts and rights into the arms and targeting her head, without much success. Lima’s years of experience means she’s not panicking even in the face of overwhelming quantities of firepower, with Gale putting her back into knocking her out with the constant headhunting. But Gale soon realises why it’s not a good idea to poke the Russian bear, eats a stiff shot to the base of her chin when Lima planted her feet and threw her weight into that power hook. Another one-two combo stuns her to the nose, with Lima turning the tide now that her foe is looking equally frantic but moving in the opposite direction. IT’S ALL LIMA’S SHOW all of a sudden, with Gale fading fast, taking punches left, right and center as she gets pushed into the ropes and pinned there! Lima lands shot after shot around the youngster’s guard before BLASTING her across the chin with a right hand. AND DOWN GALE GOES, slammed onto her side where she rolls over onto her back, arms splayed out above her head, completed KO’ed! It’s OVER!

Official Decision: Adriana Lima defeats Kelly Gale via KO6!

AFTER:
Lima shuts the naysayers up one more time by putting away a legitimate challenger to her throne! She may just be one step closer to claiming her Wings with this latest win, with only relative newcomers left in her way and another two fights to claim victory.

“Gale’s still young and inexperienced. She’s got some heart, but it wasn’t enough to win against the best tonight,” Lima later says to reporters.

Meanwhile, Gale has to find some other avenue to find her glory. She, too, defied expectations with her performance in this tournament after knocking out Ming Xi and of course, the last tournament’s Runner-up Archangel herself, Karlie Kloss. Only bright and bigger things are on the horizon for Gale, who receives a standing ovation as she’s escorted out of the ring moments later.
