Iskra Lawrence

Pre-Fight:
There’s a good deal of buzz around this fight to begin. The welterweight division has been harshly criticized for some time for a lack of depth. The two fighters tonight though are clearly trying to change this narrative.
On one hand there’s Sabrina Lynn. Only twenty-three years old and supporting a spectacular 8-1 record, she’s entering her tenth fight in eight months. With her only loss coming to Jennifer Lawrence, Lynn has snuck her way into the top 15 Welterweights according to Boxing World Magazine settling at #14 in the December rankings. Another win would put a bow on a dazzling debut season and likely push her even higher in the rankings.
Her opponent tonight is Iskra Lawrence, another newcomer who has made her way through three fights with three wins. Though, nobody can claim she has been unscathed. After a dominant display against Antje Utgaard, Lawrence has been knocked down four times over her last two fights, with three of those coming from Khloe Kardashian. Still, there’s a feeling that if she can win this fight it’ll go a long way in cementing her as a true contender for the top of the division.
Lynn, when asked on the opportunity to cap off a stellar year with a win, “It’s the goal, right? To continue evolving and improving. I think I’m better than Iskra as a boxer and I plan on proving that tonight. This division… it’s top heavy. And I need to prove that I can break into that upper echelon. Going 9-1 and beating someone of Iskra’s stature I think would put me there.”
Lawrence, when asked about her readiness after a shaky performance in her last fight, “I don’t want to talk about Kardashian, got it? She’s nobody and she got lucky she fought as well as she did. Look, I admit I was overlooking her. But that’s because I was looking at this fight. Sabrina has made waves and when I knock her out I’ll show that I’m the up and comer in this weight class to be worried about. Big things are coming in 2022, and I’m one of the biggest there is!”
Both fighters clearly showing off their holiday spirit, as Sabrina saunters into the ring with an all-red getup. Lawrence opts for white, though there is a bit of crimson trim to her shorts and top. The two fighters are told the rules by the ref, go back to their corners, and await the bell.
R1:
The bell rings and out come the fighters from their ring. Sabrina likes to start fast, and she tries it early with Iskra. A flurry of punches aimed at the big blonde, who stays composed. A few jabs squeak through her defense, but nothing that phases the bigger fighter.
Lynn is usually able to out-slug her foes, but Iskra has a lot of size and power to make Lynn pay. She catches her with an early right cross that takes Sabrina aback. Iskra made it look effortless and as she ducks another right from Lynn, buries a left into Sabrina’s ribs. Lawrence’s power clearly not something Sabrina could prepare for in training.
Sabrina tries to hit Lawrence with one of those signature uppercuts, but it just misses as Lawrence reacts with a quick flurry of her own. One-twos hammering away at the unprepared Lynn who finds her back on the ropes as the bell rings.
Lawrence up 10-9
R2:
Lawrence sticking inside Sabrina’s hip. A dangerous thing for Lynn to allow happen, as Lawrence has brutal KO power. But, it seems Iskra is willing to work a little bit. She hangs inside of Sabrina’s radius for the entire first to minutes of the fight, chipping away at the redhead as she shakes off Lynn’s rebuttals.
The Revolution boxer clearly not used to fighting someone of Lawrence’s stature. She attempts some hooks that don’t seem to make any inroads. It’s then that Lynn realizes she needs to alter her fight plan.
She backs off, gets some distance, and begins firing away jabs. It works as she circles the big blonde, firing off frustrating and stinging jabs that send Lawrence’s head snapping back. Lawrence gets a little too impatient and misses a right that Lynn ducks. With Lawrence coming toward her, Lynn pivots and fires off two rights into the gut of Iskra and then a beautiful left cross that snaps her opponent’s head to the side.
Lynn saves the round and ties it 19-19
R3:
A lot of the talk beforehand was who would show off more power, but it seems as she settles into a rhythm early in the third round that Sabrina is more than willing to do some dancing.
She shows off good movement and fluidity, skirting around Lawrence and letting loose some pinpoint combos. She looks incredibly mobile against Lawrence, who moves incredibly well for her size as well.
Lawrence does well to just hang with Sabrina for the first two minutes, but after a call from her corner Lynn realizes Iskra is giving up her left side a bit. Sabrina wastes no time and lands a gorgeous right hook that sends Lawrence stumbling. Lynn on the hunt! She chases down Lawrence and with another brutal right sends the blonde crashing into the corner. Lynn with all of the momentum now as she picks apart Iskra’s guard. Knocking it down and then firing off a furious combination of rights and lefts. Lynn standing tall as Iskra begins to slump. A brutal left-right hook combo nearly knocks the blonde down as the bell rings, saving a brutalized Lawrence from further damage.
Lynn takes the lead with an impressive late round charge, 29-28.
R4:
The American feels good as she doesn’t take a seat in her corner, choosing to stand as she gazes at a huffing and puffing Lawrence across the ring.
Iskra overcompensates early with her guard, something Lynn takes advantage of. She barrels up and starts to really work Lawrence’s body. She slams rights into the brit’s ribcage and abdomen. Lawrence just giving it to her.
But Sabrina makes a massive mistake. She’s lost track of her surroundings, too focused in on taking what Iskra is giving her, she doesn’t realize Iskra wants her to take it. Lawrence allows her body to get targeted to sucker Sabrina in… when she gets to close.
BAM
A brutal uppercut that sends Lynn careening into the ropes. She just barely holds on as Lawrence comes in and begins her own body-busting routine. Sabrina keeps her guard up high, allowing Lawrence to just hammer rights and lefts into her. Lynn holding on for dear life as the bell rings.
A come from behind round from Iskra ties them up 38-38.
R5:
Each fighter comes out a little worse for wear. Bruises and cuts starting to form on the torso of each fighter. Lawrence tries to keep hitting her big shots, but Sabrina is quick enough to avoid any major damage.
Lawrence decides she needs to try to soften Sabrina up. She’s impressed Lynn was able to stand up to her uppercut, so she decides to try to sucker her in again. She lets her guard hang low a bit. Lynn fires off jabs.
Not what Iskra wants. She wants to catch an overly aggressive Sabrina, but the redhead isn’t falling for it again. Lynn simply dances around, takes what Lawrence gives her, and hits her with some jabs as she tries to figure out how the hell she’s going to get Lawrence to fall.
The round is mostly flirting and ends with Lynn landing a bit more and she retakes the lead 48-47.
R6:
As sometimes happens in welterweight bouts, the dancing and footwork starts to decline as the two bigger fighters enter the back-half of a fight. There’s a lot less dodging now and more relying on their guard to stand up. Lawrence defends Sabrina’s flurries well and begins to smartly counter-punch her way into a lead.
Lynn is giving ground. She tries to circle, but her feet aren’t as swift as they were in round one. She catches a left to the jaw that she would have dodged earlier. It gives Iskra an opening. She follows with a right that kind of ping-pongs Sabrina between her gloves. Lynn is able to keep her guard tight, though and even fires off a defensive uppercut that makes Iskra back off.
A lot of clinching going on in this round, but Lawrence’s early aggressiveness gives her the edge as the round comes to a close.
Tied up 57-57.
R7:
Lawrence has never gone seven rounds. Lynn has only done it once. Both women are in uncomfortable territory as their gloves seem heavier. The blows sting more. And every movement they make expends valuable energy.
Lynn is able to make some inroads and lands a combo that sends Lawrence back on her heels. Sabrina feels like this is it… she can turn this into something. With the blonde forced all the way back to the ropes, her guard begins to drop. Sabrina wallops her with a left-right hook combo. Lynn can feel it! She has Iskra right where she wants her.
But then the big blonde savvily throws her arms around Sabrina in clinch and is able to walk herself off of the ropes. Lynn frustrated as the clinch is broken. A golden opportunity gone and now she has to restart.
Sabrina goes for a right hook again, but Lawrence is waiting for it. She ducks it. Then she puts everything she has into a right hand that nails the redhead square in the abdomen. Lynn loses her mouthguard as she drops onto her knees and then flops to her side.
Lynn tries to push herself up, as she clutches her stomach, but can’t seem to find her feet. Her knees wobble as she starts to stand, and she loses her balance. Falling onto her shoulder the ref finishes their count. It’s all over!!!
WINNER VIA KO IN ROUND 7: ISKRA LAWRENCE
Post-Fight:
An absolutely epic bout between two fast-rising rookies. Lawrence gets a statement win! Lynn shows she can eat haymakers from pretty much anyone in the division. Both women have positives and negatives to walk away from this fight with, but it’s Lawrence who marches out of the ring with her hands over her head.
When asked if Lawrence’s power was too much for her, Lynn says, “You know what, not really in the sense of being able to win the fight. Clearly, yes she has tons of power and she was able to rock me for periods of the fight. But, when it came down to it I just missed a few opportunities. Iskra’s power didn’t prevent me from winning this fight. My own lack of execution did. And that’s not a bad thing because it’s something I personally can correct. And I will.”
When asked if Lynn was the toughest fighter she’s faced, “I mean, Kardashian knocked me down and so did Graham. So no, I don’t think she was. I think girls like her, J-Law, Gillan… they’re all tailor made for me to be able to beat. I’m stronger than them and I can endure whatever they throw at me. Girls like Khloe and Ashley are a little tougher for me because I can’t just bully them back. But Sabrina… look, she showed a lot of heart out there. But I knew when I stepped in the ring that it was only a matter of time until my power got the better of her. And I feel the same way about almost every other fighter in this division.” |
