Kennedy McMann vs. Lily Aldridge (Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)
BEFORE:
Big fight for both women, but for different reasons. Aldridge, who's coming off two excellent years, is on the fringes of the title picture and looking to claim her first-ever shot at the lineal gold. McMann, meanwhile, is sitting fourth in a five-fighter Front Street lightweight division and staring right down the barrel of a year that might make or break her career in the stable. So, plenty to gain and plenty to loses for both women, and both are plenty CONFIDENT coming in.
"I've heard about Kennedy failing in big fights and all that," says Lily with a shake of the head. "A couple of tough PPV fights is a small sample size. I don't believe this girl can't win big ones. But, I DO believe she can't win tonight. And, the reason for that has nothing to do with HER and everything to do with ME."
"Lily's a challenge, for sure," says the redhead. "She's as good as anyone I've been in with. But. This is a big year for me. People are looking for me to prove that all the hype when I got to the FCBA was justified. Well. It was. And, I WILL prove it."
ROUND ONE:
Aldridge likes to come forward behind the jab, but Kennedy's havinjg none of it. Redhead wants to get to gunnery range and fight from there, and she's using her own left to enforce that distance. She's snapping it in Lily's face again and again, keeping the brunette from getting any forward motion going. Instead, the model's out on the end of the actress' punches, right where McMann wants her to be. Lily's working hard to get something going, but Kennedy is frustrating her at every turn, keeping the left in her face, dropping the right hand behind it, and giving the brunette a thorough thumping. Aldridge is never hurt, mind, but she's taking the worst of it from the opening bell to the final one. And, when that closing bell rings, there's no doubt about what the cards show. McMann. Wide. And up 10-9.
ROUND TWO:
McMann back at range, but Lily showing more head and foot movement now, angling past, getting her jab on, following with hard right hands, backing the redhead up. NOW the brunette's getting what she wants, and it makes all the difference. She's getting punches put together, tossing Kennedy onto the defensive, taking the initiative away from and the fight to the younger woman. By the middle of the round, Aldridge has things firing on all cylinders, landing solid flurries and forcing the redhead to the back foot. Kennedy's reduced to countering here and there as Lily takes command, piling up points and punishment and just getting stronger as the round goes on. When the bell rings, for the second time in a row, it's wide, but this time it's Lily and we're even at 19.
ROUND THREE:
Now it's Kennedy who adjusts, doubling up on the jab, giving a little ground, showing a bit more foot movement of her own. She's able to slow Lily's forward motion now, and it makes a huge difference. Now, McMann's able to stay off the back foot and the defensive and fight lead at times. At others, Lily's able to get her jabbing flurries on target, come forward, follow on with others. Add all this up, and you get a good, two-way round with neither fighter able to establish any control for the simple reason that neither is able to get the terms she wants on a consistent basis. There's not much in it at any time, and, as we roll into the final seconds, things remain in doubt. Both fighters make a play to steal the points, leading to some heavy late exchanges, and, when the bell rings, it's a near thing, but it's McMann, who moves back into the lead 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
More of the same. McMann jabbing and moving for space, Lily working forward behind the jab, looking to force Kennedy backward. BOOM! Right hand, LILY and McMann is HURT! Kennedy wobbles, covers up, and the brunette goes all in! Aldridge looking to finish this thing, drives the redhead into the ropes and lets her have it with both hands. McMann in a high guard, jabbing back here and there, but mostly taking. Aldridge teeing her up, using that left to set up hard right hands. Kennedy picking off some of it, rolling with some of it, but plenty of leather is getting through. McMann, though, is able to keep the "off" switch hidden until the bell rings. When it does, though, the redhead is looking more than a little scuffed and the brunette has taken the points wide to even things again, this time at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Lily walking Kennedy down behind that jab. McMann, without the legs under her, unable to hold canvas. Instead, the brunette is dominant, putting together sharp, accurate combinations that back up the redhead again and again. Kennedy working hard to stay off the ropes, but that's all she's managing to get done as Aldridge is in complete control of the proce...BOOM! Right hand counter, KENNEDY and Lily IS STEPPIN' IN FENCE POST HOLES! McMann with an absolutely PERFECT keyhole counter and Lily is in deep trouble. Kennedy quickly over to the offensive, letting the hands go in a big way, snapping back the brunette's head with a right hand and then DROPPING HER WITH A THREE-PUNCH COMBINATION! McMann to a neutral corner. Aldridge down on her right side parallel to the ropes. Ref counting down on the brunette. Lily grabs the bottom rope at five, pulls herself to her knees at seven, grabs the top rope at nine, but she's still climbing when the count passes her by! It's OVER! And your winner by KO5 is Kennedy McMann!
AFTER:
Redhead with a smile of both joy and relief. She's gotten a big win on this night, one that will take the pressure off, at least for awhile. "It's never easy to win on this stage," Kennedy says. "But, if you're going to go places in the FCBA, that's what you have to do. And, that's exactly what I did." |
