Caroline Wozniacki vs Kelly Rohrbach (FCBA Independent vs Lioness Club of America) (6-7, 4 KO vs 33-19, 33 KO) Results: Lookout!; Story: Vassago
BEFORE: Former Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki hopes to finally break through in the boxing universe following on-off career in the last few years. She couldn't overcome Mathilde Gohler in Danish Supremacy fight last time out but believes Kelly Rohrbach serves as a manageable opponent on her return to the ring. That's a bold assumption despite the fact Wozniacki is basically a genuine middleweight and owns supreme athleticism dating back to her professional tennis career.
Meanwhile Rohrbach just blasted Samantha Hoopes in JMDD rules on the Lioness Club anniversary card and simply admires the Dane's courage: "Caro is a true competitor alright. She takes no easy outs which is fine. However I'm just gonna pile more misery on her and I don't care if this is a catchweight fight or whatever else. This is Peak Kelly on display, just ask Tess Valmore how highly the media rate me right now!" (winks).
Caroline Wozniacki wears a green one-piece swimsuit & silver gloves. Long blonde hair tied in a braid. Kelly Rohrbach wears a salmon-red one-piece swimsuit & black gloves. Long blonde hair tied in a custom ponytail. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds at 138 lbs catchweight.
Round 1: Kelly shows no signs of fatigue as she blasts the fellow blonde in the rack as if she's still engaged in JMDD action before looping a left cross on the mouth. Caroline has to gather her thoughts but it's a difficult task when the fellow blonde rips more head shots on target and easily outworks the former tennis pro. All Kelly here in the opener as she blows more punches into the Dane's face and backs her onto the ropes where she switches into a steady gut-checking series trying to punish Wozniacki as much as possible. The high-octane blast meets the desired goal and drops Caroline behind a desperate earmuff limiting her response to mere single swings from behind the guard thereafter. Rohrbach keeps the pressure on and whacks Caroline in the guts in the closing stages to underline her complete dominance.
Round 2: Caroline dances away from the model's jabbing blast and settles down into a familiar counter-punching plan while Kelly gets a little too careless after that dominant opener. She tries to knock Wozniacki's head off and leaves too much space for that overhand response which eventually neutralizes her slugging approach and allows the Danish blonde to stick meaningful leather in heads up exchange. Rohrbach refuses to back off at first but then gets busted across the mouth with a nasty combo and Caroline bends her to the side with another wild uppercut that sinks the American on soft knees. Ugh! Kelly forces an unexpected clinch to run out the clock and it seems like that last punch really hurt her!
Round 3: More head-hunting action early in the third and Caroline matches the model's execution before landing a quick left/right double on the chin to drive the hitherto dominant blonde off into mid-distance. Kelly barks in anger when she has to settle for a single punch delivery to weather the Dane's aggressive comeback but still leaks several crisp shots as Wozniacki pours it on to drop her opponent onto the ropes where she digs deep into her midsection. Ugh! Kelly cries out in discomfort when Caroline flicks those harpoons on target but fails to lock her in a clinch following a stray headbutt that allows the former tennis #1 to blow up the stance and land several hard shots in the exposed midriff again. Kelly slumps into loud spasms and can only soak up more heat as Wozniacki duly cleans her up to take a surprising lead on the cards after three!
Round 4: Kelly roars back to deliver another head-hunting blast and she beats Caroline to the punch before knocking her head back in hard slugging fashion. Wozniacki would be better off biding her time in mid-distance but she tries to ride the momentum wave and accepts the slugging call to trade vicious leather in the center of the ring much to the crowd's delight. She gives Kelly a small gash under the left eye but then soaks up a wild hook on the nose herself and wobbles to her heels which allows the American to smash her back to the ropes with a speedy jabbing series. Caroline can't quite find her balance and gets shoved onto the ropes with Kelly dropping more head shots and slicing the suddenly leaky high-guard until the Danish blonde finally clinches her to stall the action. But the damage has been done and Kelly claims the round on points.
Round 5: Caroline tries to move on with more body shots for a change but gets whacked with a drilling uppercut from the inside and fails to raise her gloves just as the model RIPS a right hook on the eye that slumps her into instant trouble seconds into the fifth... Kelly unloads from the other side and NAILS the fellow blonde with a booming left hook on the ear that DROPS WOZNIACKI ON HER BACKSIDE!!! Uh-oh! Huge punch right here that landed clean on target. Kelly struts back to her corner while Caroline has to shake off the knockdown daze. She recovers back to her feet at eight but gives away that hollow look in her eyes and gets mauled over to the ropes with Rohrbach free swingin' into a commanding position. She traps the ailing Dane in the hole and rips through her high-guard rocking the blonde ponytail back & forth and rendering the former tennis pro numb before too long. The one-sided beating continues for a few seconds but it has to be stopped and the ref finally makes the right call to pull the model off her prey. TKO5 Kelly Rohrbach!!!
AFTER: Caroline gave it her best and didn't go down easily but she just had to succumb to a superior woman in the end. She still puts on a brave face when she's escorted back to her corner while Kelly soaks up the ovation from the audience over in the opposite corner. This is a busy month for the Connecticut native with Elsa Hosk awaiting on the PPV in eight days' time. The Lionesses' plan to elevate Kelly into serious title contention requires this packed schedule but coach Claudia Schiffer admits it's still uncertain which door opens first since JMDD is very much on the agenda as well: "As long as we win these fights everything is fine! Kelly has all the marketing potential and she will attract top line offers sooner rather than later!"
Official Result: Kelly Rohrbach def. Caroline Wozniacki TKO5.
