(Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz) Laura Pausini versus Anya Chalotra
BEFORE: Most folks think the longest losing streak in NFL history belongs to the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who, during their first two seasons, lost 26 games in a row before finishing that second season with two straight wins...leading to the immediate firings of the two head coaches who LOST to the Buccaneers. This, however, isn't technically true. The Chicago Cardinals started the 1942 season 3-2...then went nearly three calendar years without a victory. Included in that streak was the 1944 season when, unable to find enough players due to World War II, the Cardinals merged with the Pittsburgh Steelers...and lost all ten games. By the time the team got another win, it had dropped 29 games in a row...the EXACT same number of consecutive losses Laura Pausini is sitting on entering this fight. Worse, across the ring from Pausini tonight is The Wolverhampton Wanderer, Anya Chalotra, who is ABSOLUTELY a legitimate contender for the bantamweight title. Bambi, meet Godzilla? Well. Laura, for one, isn't buying it. "Obviously," says the Italian beauty, "I'm the underdog. But. Once this fist finds her chin? Everything changes."
"I'm not taking her lightly," says Chalotra. "Not at all. But, I AM going to beat her. No doubt about that."
ROUND ONE:
Pausini wants to close and bang, and Chalotra's having none of it. The British beauty's using the feet and the jab to establish distance, moving well, boxing, making the older woman work hard to square and land the odd shot. And, making it impossible for the Italian to close. Not that Laura's not trying. She's angling, moving the feet, trying to get to spots, but the younger brunette's not having any. She's in rhythm, doing what she does, putting together punches, not hurting the Italian, but scoring very, very well with both hands. At the bell, there's no doubt about it. It's Chalotra and wide to take a 10-9 lead. (By the by, Pausini has already surpassed the longest losing streaks in all the other North American professional sports, 28 by the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA, 26 by the Louisville Colonels in Major League Baseball and 17 by the San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals in the NHL.)
ROUND TWO:
Laura a bit more aggressive and a lot more effective in round two. She's still pressing forward, but she's using a lot more foot movement, playing the angles well, getting past Chalotra's defenses at times, and quickly stepping to to work body and some head in the phone booth. Pausini showing plenty of power in those exchanges, forcing the younger woman backward. Anya doing her best to keep the in-fighting to a minimum, but she's not able to do so as effectively as she did in the first. And, while the British beauty offsets much of what the Italian does INside with her own solid work OUTside, when the bell rings, Pausini's taken the points narrowly to even things at 19. (To find a North American sports losing streak longer than Pausini's you have to head to college football, where Northwestern holds the FBS record of 34 straight losses, including a winless 1981 season when the team was outscored by more than 40 points per game. But, the longest streak in all of college football belongs to the Panthers of Prairie View, who, between 1989 and 1998, lost EIGHTY consecutive games.)
ROUND THREE:
Same again. Good, two-way stuff, with Chalotra in control when she's able to keep Pausini at range and the older brunette getting much more done when she can close and get physical with the British brunette. Laura finding ways to get Anya off balance, working body, head, back to the body. Getting into a rhy...BOOM! Right hook, Chalotra and the Italian is HURT! Laura wobbles and Anya goes all in, pummeling the older brunette with both hands, wobbling her again and again until, eventually, it all becomes too much and Laura crumples, face first, to the canvas. Pausini is game, trying to push up to hands and knees twice, but, both times, she sinks back to the canvas where she remains as the count passes her by. It's OVER! And your winner by KO3 is Anya Chalotra! (And, Pausini's 30th loss in a row leaves her ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SEVEN away from the all-time North American sports record...Caltech's men's basketball team, which lost 207 straight games.)
AFTER:
Anya a little scuffed but smiling. "She can definitely HIT," the British beauty admits. "But, like I said, there was no doubt I was winning this bout. Now, I'm hunting for a little bigger game...like the winner of Reinhart/Lind. How about THAT?" |
