BEFORE: "It's been almost three years since I was here," says J-Law with a smile. "And, I blasted McKinney right out of this stable. I don't suppose Perry's going to get her walking papers after I win, but, just MAYbe this stable without a welter will realize there's a champion on the market."
"This stable," says a hard-eyed Katy, "HAS a welter, and you're looking at her."
ROUND ONE: O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'Fever' by the Black Keys, and here comes former Unified Welterweight Champion Jennifer Lawrence!"
McCarthy: "Here's where I point out that Lawrence has more welterweight titles than Weirdo's entire stable!"
Tess: "And, I've got to admit I'm surprised she's still a free agent. She's only 31, and she's a former champ with a winning record. You'd think someone would have signed her by now..."
O'Dell: "Lawrence into the ring and helped off with the robe, and the crowd appreciating J-Law in that maya blue number we've seen before. And, that's 'California Gurls' you hear pounding through the arena, and that can only mean the singer of that tune, 'The Santa Barbara Slugger', Katy Perry, is on her way to the ring..."
Cassie: "And, allow me to set the record straight on what Katy said pre-fight. She's definitely going to get some work at welter...but not exclusively."
McCarthy: "Are you RUNNING this stable now, Scabbo?"
Cassie: "Let's just say I have the EAR of the person who IS running this stable."
O'Dell: "Katy climbs into the ring and is helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve, and she's looking plenty good in that red number she prefers. Ladies about ready to go. Time for some picks. Tess likes Katy. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Lawrence is no Palicki, but she's a good fighter. J-Law!"
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "There's the bell and J-Law wants to work at range, get her box on. Perry, however, with different ideas. Katy looking to work forward, get in close and bang. But, the blonde not having any. She's moving well, giving ground here and there, keeping the jab in the brunette's face..."
Tess: "Kind of surprised to see Perry this aggressive early..."
O'Dell: "I'd suspect Lawrence is, too, but the blonde is handling it very, very well. She's using all her length and athleticism to supplement her boxing skills, and she's getting much the better of things, keeping the brunette at arms length and giving her a good thumping..."
Cassie: "This is old-school Katy, the girl we saw back when she first came to Front Street...and I suspect Neve is going have something to say about that."
O'Dell: "And, Perry will be hearing from Ms. Campbell in less than thirty seconds. NICE combination from J-Law there and Perry lands a solid right in response. Final ticks coming off the clock as we see one last exchange and there's the bell. Not close at all. Lawrence."
McCarthy: "And, J-Law takes the 10-9 lead."
ROUND TWO: O'Dell: "Right to work in the second, and on the same terms. Perry determined to close and bang with Lawrence, and J-Law not going to have it. She's working the jab, moving the feet and GETTING ROCKED! Katy slips past the left and lands a BOOMING right that staggers the blonde..."
Cassie: "THAT'S what Perry was looking for..."
O'Dell: "Most certainly was, and it's turned the fight in a big way. Lawrence backed to the ropes now, and Perry getting off lusty, hammering away with both hands. J-Law rolling with, blocking, jabbing back in spots, but Katy piling up the points and the punishment right now..."
McCarthy: "Lawrence doing a good job of riding it out, though..."
O'Dell: "Definitely is. We're into the final seconds of what's been a HUGE round for the brunette, but the blonde is still standing. Good right from Katy as she keeps banging away, but Lawrence going to survive. There's the bell. And, it's Perry wide in the second."
Tess: "And, we're even at 19."
ROUND THREE: O'Dell: "Perry pushing forward, getting physical as we start the third. Lawrence willing to give some ground, but she's engaging in a fighting retreat now, landing some solid shot in counter. Katy sound. She's not going to take chances against a girl who can hit like Lawrence..."
McCarthy: "She's got control. No reason to give it away."
O'Dell: "Jennifer starting to solidify her front now. Perry easing off on the gas pedal now, willing to box at range all of a sudden. Complete change of tactics from the brunette, as she's now boxing with the blonde, and giving every bit as good as she gets doing so..."
Tess: "Not surprised by this. This is, pretty much, what we expected to see."
O'Dell: "Indeed it is, two boxer-punchers doing their thing at gunnery range, and both doing it pretty darn well right now. We're down to ten seconds remaining in the third. SHARP exchange and another and there's the bell. Much closer this time, but Katy takes her second round in a row."
Cassie: "And pulls into the 29-28 lead."
ROUND FOUR: O'Dell: "Ladies back to range, boxing, moving hands, head, feet. But, while it's good, technical stuff, there are plenty of power blows being exchanged between two hard hitters and DOWN GOES PERRY! Oh, what a SHOT from Lawrence as she drops the brunette to her back with a right hand!"
McCarthy: "Scabbo might be singing in a second..."
O'Dell: "Lawrence to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Perry sitting up at six. Seven. Eight...She BEATS it! Katy to her feet at nine, but looking plenty unsteady. Referee thinking about it as he gives her the mandatory, but he waves on J-Law and she's ALL IN to finish this thing..."
Cassie: "Katy in DEEP trouble right now."
O'Dell: "She's backed to the ropes and getting PUMMELED as the blonde lets the hands go. Perry keeping the guard high, firing back on occasion, doing enough to keep the ref from stopping it, at least for the moment. Ten seconds to go. Good right from J-Law, and there's the bell. HUGE round for Lawrence."
Tess: "And the blonde pulls into the 38-37 lead."
ROUND FIVE: O'Dell: "Lawrence in command as we start the fifth. Perry's legs still mighty iffy, and J-Law taking full advantage, backing up the brunette, punishing her with hard right hands. Katy's firing back here and there, but she's mostly backing and covering as Lawrence fights lead."
Tess: "J-Law looking hard for the finisher, Jenny..."
O'Dell: "Definitely is. And, so far, Katy's been able to deny her that. GOOD combination by Lawrence snaps back Perry's head, but the brunette stays on her feet. Perry continues to give ground, but she's managing to stay off the ropes and score in counter in spots."
McCarthy: "Most importantly, she's staying on her feet. This fight isn't over on the cards."
O'Dell: "Definitely is not. Coming down the stretch. J-Law still in control, still looking to end this thing, but it's not going to happen in this round. Sharp exchange there, and Perry gives as good as she gets for the first time since the knockdown, and there's the bell. Lawrence. Wide."
Cassie: "And, J-Law extends her lead to 48-46 at the half."
ROUND SIX: O'Dell: "Second half begins with ranged boxing. Lawrence isn't going to press this too far. She can see Perry's got the legs mostly back under her, so she's not going to be damning any torpedoes. Instead, she's going to box with and that's a pretty smart decision, considering she has the lead..."
Cassie: "This is one thing fighters sometimes take a LONG time to learn...how to fight with the lead."
O'Dell: "Lawrence knows, that's for sure. She's staying aggressive, working hard, just not taking any undue chances here. For her part, Perry not panicking. The brunette knows there's a long way to go here. No need to force anything, and she's not doing that at the moment."
Tess: "Pretty close round as a result of all that."
O'Dell: "Definitely is. Nobody able to gain any real advantage here. Nice exchange there and both fighters landed a solid right hand in it. Plenty of action in the sixth and there's another sharp trade of punches before the bell. Close, but it's going to be a third straight round for Lawrence."
McCarthy: "And, she's built a nice three-point lead, 58-55."
ROUND SEVEN: O'Dell: "Seventh begins the way the sixth ended, with blonde and brunette boxing at range. Again, it's good, two-way stuff, with both fighters getting work done and no one able to take control or gain much of an advantage. And, once again, we're seeing plenty of power blows..."
Cassie: "These two can HIT, so..."
O'Dell: "Exactly. No lack of power from either, as we've already seen in this one. THERE'S a sharp exchange with both heads snapping back. Ladies move the feet, angle, reset, Perry gets off in combination forcing J-Law to cover up, but Jennifer fires right back..."
McCarthy: "Have to admit, this has been a pretty good fight for one featuring a Dancing Hooker..."
O'Dell: "And, it's been a good round, too. And, we're coming down the stretch with, once again, not much in it. Ladies working the feet, good combination from Perry. Lawrence responds with a solid right hand and there's the bell. Close again, but the brunette gets the points this time."
Tess: "And Lawrence's lead is cut to 67-65."
ROUND EIGHT: O'Dell: "Back at it fighting at range in the eighth and PERRY ROCKS LAWRENCE! J-Law STAGGERED by a nasty right hand from the brunette, and now Perry's ALL IN! She's winging away, battering the blonde back into the ropes and then starting to call in artillery strikes..."
Tess: "Lawrence did VERY well to take that punch and stay on her feet..."
O'Dell: "No doubt about it. Can't think of many girls that wouldn't have put down. But, while Lawrence managed to stay upright, Perry's doing everything she can to remedy that situation right now. She's banging away at J-Law's guard, digging a bit of body here and there..."
McCarthy: "Trying to bring that guard down, but not succeeding."
O'Dell: "J-Law hanging on, jabbing back here and there. Ref looking in, but Lawrence is doing enough to keep him at bay. We're under fifteen seconds to go. GOOD right from Perry shook Lawrence at the bell. Huge round for Katy, who pitches a shutout, but Lawrence is still on her feet."
Cassie: "And, still in the lead, 76-75."
ROUND NINE: O'Dell: "Perry pressing forward now. She's looking to finish this thing. Lawrence still wobbly, giving ground, throwing on occasion, but, there's not enough behind it to slow Katy, who's keeping the blonde on the back foot. There's a SOLID right from Perry and that got Lawrence's attention..."
Cassie: "And the referee's..."
O'Dell: "Katy a nice combination and that shook J-Law! Ref not going to watch much more of this. Perry stepping in now, working some body. Lawrence trying to tie up. Katy levering with the shoulder and DROPPING J-LAW WITH A RIGHT UPPERCUT! Oh, what a SHOT!"
Tess: "That is ABSOLUTELY going to do it..."
O'Dell: "Katy to a neutral corner. Lawrence down on her back, not moving at all. Count at three. Four. Five. This is a formality. Six. Seven. Lawrence not moving. Both down and OUT. Nine. TEN! It's OVER! And your winner by KO9 is 'The Santa Barbara Slugger', Katy Perry!"
McCarthy: "Couple of lucky shots, that's all."
AFTER: O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Cassie Scerbo..."
Cassie: "I have our winner, Katy Perry, and, Katy that's a really big win for you..."
Katy (smiling): "You know, I HAVE beaten some pretty good welters in my career, Bock, Regan, Rhoda, Upton. I can win up here."
Cassie: "But, that doesn't mean you won't still be working at lightweight..."
Katy (laughing): "Well, YOU of all people know the answer to that. Light, welter, the beach, the Ice Hotel, JMDD, I'm up for any and all of it. Any and all of it." |
