Before: Mary Winstead returns to the ring for her first bout after losing her FCBA Lightweight Title to Nina Agdal. MEW isn’t taking the easy route as she faces off against white hot, undefeated (11-0) Lily James of the League of Mighty Women.

“When have I ever taken an ‘easy route’ after a big loss. Believe me. losing my belt to Nina was painful in more ways than one,” says Mary at the prefight press meeting. “So picked Lily James who is a very impressive young fighter. I mean she knocked out my best frenemy Yvonne Strahovski and I can tell you that is not easy. Now she Lily is going to face the full ‘Winnie Winstead Experience’ and we’ll see how that goes.”

Lily James says: “I have a great deal of respect for Mary Winstead. I know she is one of the hardest fighters to beat and being able to do that would be a big milestone for me. I have been training hard to prepare for this fight. I am confident I am ready for Mary Winstead. We will see if she is truly ready for me.”

“Bold words,” comments Mary.

“It’s what I honestly think,” replies Lily. “I’m not trying to brag.”

“Oh, go ahead and brag. I’m used to it,” Mary says agreeably, “but I do usually make braggarts pay a price for it.”

“Then it is a good thing I am not a braggart. I simply state facts,” Lily continues. “The fact is that I feel ready for you and I wonder if you are truly ready for me.”

“Don’t worry about that, I’ll be ready, you can be sure of that,” Mary says.

“Then I think we should get this fight going. I actually eager to see how it turns out,” Lily says.

“So do I, “ Mary says and adds, “I don’t think you will like the result.”

“Maybe—but maybe not,” Lily returned.

The fighters are soon on their way to the ring. Mary is in her navy blue bikini with light blue gloves and boots (dark blue laces). Her bobbed hair is wetted down. Lily in pink, high waisted bikini with halter top. Black globes and boots with pink laces. Blonde hair pulled back in battle braid, Both fighters cool as the official drones through the instructions. Finally this is done. Quick tap of the gloves and fighters go to their corners. The bell rings….

R1; Mary rolls out her pressure offensive right from the start. Lily banged up quickly to face, jaw, chin and then Mary goes to the body. Lily trying to hang in there, she stabs out her jabs to try to counter MEW but it is not stopping the veteran. Now Mary moving from side to side, trying to confuse the younger fighter while smacking home more hard shots to the jaw and sides of Lily’s head. Lily obliged to protect her head but now Mary stuffs a fresh waves of hooks into Lily’s midsection. Lily finally trying to pull back and cover her retreat with the jab, but Mary hanging with her keeping up pressure to the bell. Both hammer ribs, abs and breasts. Lily seems to be getting better leverage on her punches as the round rolls on. Mary being forced back slowly, but noticeably. The bell rings to end the battle and the judges rule Lily James has pulled ut a narrow win.

Lily retreating in some confusion as she is sluggish I getting her defensive jab going. Mary looking to drive Lily into the ropes and now is hooking Lily to the belly to push her backwards. Lily trying to slow the pressure, but then her derriere hits the ropes and she has to bury her face in her gloves, Mary working over Lily’s body with thorough body scrubbing but then runs out of time before she get Lily down. Mary steps back looking pleased to see a shaken Lily James leave the ropes. She knows she’s won this round wide.

R6: Hard work by the LMW corner gets Lily James back out in fighting rather getting worked over in the previous round. Lily bobs and weaves as Mary comes in, eager to resume her beat down. Then Lily suddenly strikes with a big right hand that BOOM! Catches Mary’s on the jaw and sends her lurching off to the side. Lily moving with her piles on the hurt with straight rights and lefts that bust up Mary’s face, Blood trickling down Mary’s chin from her nose. She’s slow to get her mitts up to protect her head allowing Lily to bang away at her jaw and chin. Mary finally gets her mitts up and Lily now attacks to the body. Mary finally gets her jabs going, but it is not enough to stop the rampaging Lily. Lily seems to be trying to herd Mary to the ropes, Mary able to stay off the strands, but she’s battered all the way to the bell. Lily James wins this round wide and leaves Mary looking shaky as she returns to her corner.

R7: MEW’s fan wait anxiously as the Foxfire corner crew tries to repair the damage. Can she come back from another bad round? She’s done it many times before and fans cheer as Mary comes out looking determined. Mary on the attack as soon as she reaches Lily James at mid ring. However Lily seems prepared for comeback and skillfully blocking or blunting most of Mary’s incoming. Lily striking back to the body initially, but as the round rolls on she spots and opening and BAM! Lily cracks a right to Mary’s chin, then BAM! A left to Mary’s chin. Then KA-BOOM big right uppercut under the chin. Mary’s head snaps back AND DOWN GOES MARY! MEW crashes hard onto her back and lays there stunned. Lily trots to the neutral and watches with interest as referee counts. Mary pushing up herself into a sitting position, pulls herself together and struggles to rise. Takes two tries for Mary to make it back to her feet and stop the count at “NINE!” Fight resumes, Mary gamely trying to be ready as Lily closes in on her. Lily leans against the ropes for a moment and then holds up her arms in triumph.

THE WINNER LILY JAMES DEFEATS MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD TKO7!

After: “Wow! What a fight,” an excited Lily James tells the press. “I was really worried about Mary coming back after R6. We had studied her previous fights and knew if anyone could do it. She could. So I had to be ready to block her counterattack. That preparation really worked for me as I blocked her shots and nailed her with my counters. I think I am justified if thinking it’s time I had shot at the Lightweight Title. No, I haven’t talked to my management about it yet—but I feel I have earned.”

Its not until much later that Mary talks with the press: “Well, I don’t get to pick the opponents for the Lightweight Title shots anymore, but I would have agree at James has earned one. She is durable, smart and can hit hard. I have the lumps to prove it. Of course, it is discouraging to lose, but I am not about dwell on it. I will be back winning soon enough. That’s all I have to say about this fight.”

Quite an impressive win for Lily James. We don’t know about if she will get a Lightweight Title shot soon, but it sure looks like she has qualified for. Not many young fighters can say they have handled Mary Elizabeth Winstead this well, taking a lot of punishment, but fighting back to get a TKO win. MEW fought hard but her fabled toughness seems to have failed her in this fight as she was unable to come back from a bad beating in the 6th and got finished off in the 7th. Hopefully, this was only a glitch in Mary’s career and she will be back on the winning track very soon.
