Peyton List
(24, 5'6, 10:9 FCBA, Front Street)
vs.
Ginny Gardner (27, 5'8, 18:15 FCBA, The Dollhouse)
(Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)
BEFORE:
Battle of a pair of blonde bantams who've been through some rough waters in their FCBA careers. Gardner's been in the FCBA for five years and shown plenty of promise, but, things went off the rails in late 2020. Gardner's lost five of her last six, and, worse, hasn't fought at ALL in 2022, so, yeah, she needs a win tonight. "This is HUGE for me," the blonde beauty admits. "I've been pushing to get back in the ring for months. Well, now's the chance, and I have to show something tonight."
Peyton, who's still only 24, has been in the FCBA for SEVEN years, starting six months after her eighteenth birthday, and is already on her third stable. Before joining Front Street in 2021, she had two wins in ten tries, and, while she's done what's been expected since then, she's also a girl in need of "showing something". "Big opportunity to get back on the big stage," Peyton says with a smile, "And, I'm up to it!"
ROUND ONE:
List is up to it. She's giving away some reach to Gardner, who's a couple of inches taller, but that doesn't bother the younger blonde. Peyton's setting up behind that jab, getting her box on the way she likes to do. She's working out the geometry perfectly, getting to where she needs to be to get off. And, she gets off in combination again and again. Ginny's out of sorts, and that's no surprise. You can work as many rounds in the gym as you want. There's nothing like live competition, and Gardner hasn't had any in over ninth months. It shows. She's short and late and off balance far too much. It's clear there's plenty of rust that needs to flake off, and, while that's happening, List is piling up points, and, when the bell sounds, Peyton's taken it wide to lead 10-9.
ROUND TWO:
Peyton right back to wo...BOOM! Right hand, GINNY! All the rust might not be off the older blonde, but enough is gone for her to put together a PERFECT one-two that sends List stumbling backward across the sand! And Gardner's ALL IN! Here's a chance for her to get back on track, and she's taking full advantage, driving her rival up against the ropes and letting her have it with both hands. Peyton's in deep trouble, but she's learned a few things, clearly. She's keeping the guard high, rolling with, blocking, firing back in spots, working hard to keep the ref at bay. He's looking in closely, of course, but staying his hand as Ginny looks hard for the "Off" switch, but can't find it. Final seconds see Gardner land a BIG right hook that shakes Peyton, but, before she can follow up, the bell sounds. It's Gardner, wide, and we're even at 19.
ROUND THREE:
Gardner in command, Peyton's wobbly, and Ginny knows it. She's working to finish this thing, all the while cleaning up very effectively, punishing List to both head and body, piling up points as she does so. Peyton in retreat across the beach, trying to stay off the ropes, and, mostly managing to do so. About half way through, Ginny pins her there, but List ties up, hangs on, gets a break, manages to slip away. Gardner right back forward behind that jab, working hard, working soundly, punishing the younger woman again and again. Peyton sturdy, perhaps surprisingly so, taking some heavy shell and staying afloat. She's back against the cables in the final thirty, and Gardner's tossing everything in the magazines at her. List counters here and there and hangs on to the bell, however. When it rings, it's Ginny wide again, and Gardner leads 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Gardner continuing to control things, backing Peyton across the sand early, but, as the round goes on, List's legs begin to come around. She doesn't try to hold ground initially, happy to engage in a fighting retreat, but, by about the halfway point, Peyton's no longer backing up. She's setting the feet and banging back. Add that to the fact that Gardner's looking a little arm-weary after all the energy she expended in the last two rounds, and things begin to turn. Slowly, the younger blonde begins to get the better of things and make up the early stagger. By the final thirty seconds, Peyton's firmly in control of the round, looking a lot like she did in the first. At the bell, it's close, but List has juuuuusssttttt done enough to take the points narrowly and even things up again at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Cue the video of the first round. List's got her legs back under her, and, while she looks a little more scuffed than she did in the opening frame, what's happening on the sand is almost a replay of same. She's moving well, getting to her spots, getting off. Gardner's short and late, not because of rust now, but because Peyton's controlling things, beating Ginny to everything, wrong-footing her constantly. It's really, really good stuff from List, the kind of stuff that made three different stables believe she could be a top-level fighter. As for Ginny, she's, again, out of sorts. She's scoring here and there, but that's about all she can manage, despite her best efforts. In the final seconds, a sharp exchange leads to a good right from Gardner, but, as the fighters walk back to their corners, there's no question that List's taken the points wide and gone back into the lead 48-47 at the half.
ROUND SIX:
Gardner adjusting some now. She's willing to box with, and doing it more effectively. Instead of Peyton in control, we're now seeing good, two-way stuff, mostly in the middle of the ring. But, don't think plenty of sand isn't flying. The ladies are moving feet, hands, heads, showing excellent skill both offensively and defensively. And, while nobody's hurt, plenty of solid leather is landing, with both blondes snapping back a head more than once with hard right hands. There's not a lot in it at any point of the round, and the fighters clearly know that. They turn it on late, and the final thirty seconds sees some of the most spirited exchanges of the bout to this point. At the bell, it's very, very close...but it's Peyton who gets the nod and extends her lead to 58-56 with four rounds to go.
ROUND SEVEN:
Same again. Both fighters comfortable on these terms now, and nobody looking to change. Ginny's managed to find a way to box with Peyton, and this is List's game. She's not going to change tactics unless she absolutely has to. So, we see a lot of the same stuff we saw in the sixth, good movement, feints, lots of jabs used to set up right hands, some sharp exchanges with hard leather landing. Again, nobody's hurt, but that doesn't mean some solid shot isn't getting home, because it absolutely is. And, once again, no one is able to come close to gaining a real advantage in the stanza. It's back and forth the whole way, close the whole way as the ladies box across the sand. When the final seconds tick away, it's, again, a razor's-edge difference, but, this time, it's Ginny who takes the round and cut's List's lead to a single point, 67-66.
ROUND EIGHT:
More of the same. Ladies have settled in firmly now, and this is how things are going to go, it appears. Boxing at range, with List again dealing with the reach advantage well via angles and Gardner showing her own skills now that the rust is long gone. Again, it's good, two way stuff until...BOOM! Right hand, GINNY! Gardner staggers List with a NASTY straight right and Peyton's again in deep trouble. Ginny throwing in the reserves now, as she lets the hands go, looking to take the younge woman out of there and DOWN GOES PEYTON! List dropped to her back with a VICIOUS right hook! Ginny quickly across the sand to a neutral corner. Ref counting down on a wide-eyed Peyton. List rolls to her belly at six, tries to push to hands and knees, but COLLAPSES FACE FIRST IN THE SAND and IT'S OVER! List can't get off the deck and it's OVER and your winner by KO8 is Ginny Gardner!
AFTER:
Ginny all smiles in the post. It's clearly a big win for her, as she not only got back into action, but back on track. "It's awesome," the blonde says, shaking her head. "I've been waiting so long for another chance, and I wasn't going to blow it. The first time, I let her off the hook, but I made sure that didn't happen again. I'm back! And I can't wait for another opportunity to get back in the ring!" But, if this result answered some questions about Ginny, it raised some about Peyton. Sure, she's had some success at Front Street, but her last PPV win was more than five years ago, and a loss against a struggling, albeit talented fighter returning to the ring after nine months away has to get folks wondering if the issues that have plagued the blonde beauty throughout her FCBA career are in the past. And, if the third time in a stable is, indeed, going to be the charm. |
