Malu Trevejo vs. Brie Larson (Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)
BEFORE:
Rematch of one of the Princess of the Beach Tournament fights, and we're right back on the beach, where brunette beauty Malu is BRIMMING with confidence...and, why not? She's the one who took Brie out of the tournament with a convincing KO, and she's ready to do it again. "Look, I've got respect for her," says Malu with a smile. "But, we all know what happened the last time, and that was two months ago. Nothing's changed. And, nothing will."
"I should have been Princess of the Beach," says a hard-eyed Brie. "And, she landed a couple of lucky shots and ruined that. Well. Tonight, I'm going to ruin HER."
ROUND ONE:
Malu after Brie early, pouring forward, swinging freely. And, that's just what Brie expected, and, it appears, just what she hoped for. Larson gets her box on, moving and grooving, sand flying up as she bounces, jabs, slips punches, lands hard rejoinders in the resulting openings. Trevejo's missing short, missing wide, missing a lot. She can't square up the older woman, and, as a result, she can get much going offensively. For her part, Larson's cautious and sound, but also aggressive. She's getting to her spots and getting off both quickly and lustily, stinging the younger woman with hard shots to the head, and digging the odd purpose punch to the body. Final seconds see Malu finally land a nice combination, but it's too little, too late. The first goes to Brie and by a wide margin, as Larson takes the 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
More of the same, as it looks like Malu may be a victim of fighting the last war here. She's clearly working the fight plan that led to her victory in the first fight, but Larson's spent the last two months thinking of ways to counter all of that, and she's doing it beautifully. She's out boxing Trevejo in every way possible, constantly getting her on the wrong foot, leaving her short or wide, making her miss, miss, miss. And, when the younger woman misses? Larson does not. She immediately counters, tossing punches in bunches, forcing her rival to cover up again and again. It's clear Trevejo is getting frustrated as we near the end of the round, as she's both not getting much done and getting touched up over and over again. When the bell sounds, Malu STOMPS across the sand to her corner, while Larson, who's taken a second round wide to lead 20-18, fairly BOUNCES to hers.
ROUND THREE:
Larson boxing, Malu trying to get something going, trying, and mostly failing. She just can't square her rival up, can't get to spots, can't...BOOM! Right hand, TREVEJO! Malu finally lands something solid, and it's a BIG one, a right hand that sends Brie stumbling to her right across the sand. And, the younger woman is ALL IN. She's throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the now stationary Larson and THERE'S THE KITCHEN SINK AND DOWN GOES BRIE! It's a BLISTERING right hand that drops Larson to her back in the sand! Malu raises the hands over her head in triumph, then heads to a neutral corner. Larson staring up at the referee and the bright sun as the former counts over her. Brie sitting up at six, getting unsteadily to her feet at nine. Ref gives her the mandatory and WAVES ON TREVEJO! Malu ALL IN, battering Larson across the beach, pounding away, looking for the finisher. Brie in a high guard, hanging on as the ref watches closely. Somehow, Larson manages to stay off the ropes and on her feet to the bell, but Malu's turned the fight, evening the cards at 28 and leaving the older woman in deep trouble.
ROUND FOUR:
Trevejo now able to execute the fight plan perfectly, and, with apologies to the late Olivia Newton-John, "get physical". With Larson's legs more than a little iffy, Malu is now able to square her opponent up, use the jab to set up hard right hands, get Brie in reverse and keep her there. Then, about a minute in, she finally gets Larson on the ropes and absolutely PUMMELS her with heavy leather. The ref is now on a hair-trigger as Trevejo swings for the fences, pounding shots off Brie's high guard, digging some body, and then going right back upstairs. Larson countering in spots, but doing little else as the solid, suppressive fire from the younger woman keeps her on the defensive. Brie's able to slip free in the last thirty seconds and does a little better for herself mid-ring, but, when the final seconds tick away, there's no doubt Malu's taken it wide and pulled into a 38-37 lead.
ROUND FIVE:
Malu forward again, and, while Brie's legs look somewhat better, she's still giving ground to the younger woman. Malu sitting down on punches, still trying to get Larson out of there, but Brie now looks to have shaken the worst of the damage, and, while she's still on the defensive, she's able to counter effectively, and, as the round goes on, even to hold her own in the exchanges. What Larson is NOT able to do is get back to the terms of the first two rounds, when she was dominant. Instead, Malu's effective aggression keeps things on a more even keel, with both fighters having their moments and both able to score some points and land some hard shot. When the bell rings, it's, for the first time in the bout, close, but it's Malu for the third stanza in a row, and Trevejo leads 48-46 at the half.
ROUND SIX:
Second half starts the way the first ended, with good, two-way action. Trevejo working forward, using the feet, kicking up sand as she looks to locate with the jab, then follow on with rights. Brie wants to box, moves laterally, works her own left hand, puts together some nice flurries. Both women getting work done, just like in the fifth, and no one able to gain any kind of an adva...BOOM! Right hand, BRIE and Malu is HURT! Trevejo's steppin' in ghost crab holes! Larson's quickly all in and DOWN GOES MALU! A three-punch flurry sends Trevejo to her back and now it's Brie with the arms raised headed to a neutral corner. But, Malu's going to deny her the victory. Younger woman to hands and knees at five, up at seven to take the mandatory, and, ON. COMES. LARSON. Brie charging forward, backing her rival into the cables and POUNDING AWAY with both hands. Malu in a high guard, taking a beating. Ref looking in closely. Trevejo trying to ride this thing out. BUT SHE CAN'T. A big right from Brie shakes Malu and THE REF LEAPS IN! It's OVER! And your winner by TKO6 is Brie Larson!
AFTER:
Brie plenty scuffed, but all "I told you so" in the post fight. "Like I said, I'm BETTER than this girl. She got lucky the first time, that's all. But, tonight, her luck ran out. Just like I said it would. Just like I said it would." |
