Results: Lookout. Story: Hawkeye

BEFORE:

Mishy happy to play second fiddle to Dove’s lead at flyweight, Williams flying under the radar all the way to the #2 contender position thanks to her protégé’s rise to titlist. Williams has been very public about not seeking a championship shot against her student despite her high ranking and a win against Dove earlier in the year. Tonight’s match continues Mishy’s role as gatekeeper for the division and now, specifically, Cameron.

Adding to the drama is the best of three stakes involved, Michelle having dropped Bassinger in 2020 with a 7th round stoppage and Brec getting payback in 2021 with an eight-round KO. That loss led to the following month’s HISC-Punchers stable war PLP won in what many considered an upset 3-2 decision. Highlighted amongst the comeback victory was a series tying loss by Michelle to Sasha Pieterse and a war winning Bassinger W over the current flyweight champ.

“Those losses to the Punchers were a wake-up call. And how did I respond? Five straight victories. How did Dove respond? Became the champ. Brec’s a good kid. Respectful. Solid little worker. I figured she’d make Top Ten and she has. But the kid doesn’t have half the upside Dove has and she has a big problem when in the ring with a focused Mishy. That’s me tonight. Ask Nessa. Ask Chloe. The fire’s burning and the kid is toast.”

Michelle’s in her beloved zebra stripes, a sports bra and boy-cut trunks on her sinewy, slender frame. Black gloves with white pads and boots finishing off the gear. Her platinum pixie cut is perfect for the battlefield.

The youngster’s fighting not only against a Hall of Famer but the looming possibility she’s headed back down the divisional ladder with another loss. Having steamrolled to a title fight against Hudgens earlier in 2022, including a clean sweep of Consortium flyweights, Bassinger followed up a completely legit squeaker of a loss by judges’ decision to the champ with a less auspicious pasting at the hands of Cree Cicchino.

“I don’t want to say the Consortium’s riding to my rescue with this offer, but if anyone’s cracked their code, it’s me. Some wanted me to consolidate and go down the ranks for my next fight. But there’s no way I’m passing on a rubber match with arguably the best ever. I’ve had a few months to get my groove back. Been training like a demon and HISC comes knocking on my door. It’s the dream scenario. Now I just make sure it ends with Mishy on her back, wondering why she tempted fate.”

Bassinger’s battle fatigues are comprised of a light purple two-piece ensemble, bikini top paired with clingy spandex boy-cuts below. Black gloves with purple laces. Black gloves and pads complete the wardrobe. Dirty blonde locks tied in a fightin’ pony.

R1: No trepidation from the Hall of Famer or the rising starlet. Mishy strides out of her corner and meets Brec mid-ring where they touch gloves diplomatically. From there, the niceties are out the window, the veteran forcing the issue, putting pressure on Bassinger from the start. Williams is throwing a lot of leather and she’s finding success, mostly to the torso, Michelle sinking body blows in bunches to the ribs and abdomen. Brec’s gulping hard, absorbing the hurt. But soon she’s giving as well as getting. Mishy’s trying to back her foe into a corner with her familiar ‘bull in a china shop’ play, but Brec’s standing her ground, turning a few annoying ‘peks’ to the face into a head jerking right to the jaw that slows Williams’ heavy artillery fire. It's hammer and tongs now, Mishy’s taking young jugg with uppercuts, Brec’s bounty bouncing within her top. But Bassinger isn’t letting Michelle run roughshod. She’s answering between Mishy’s efforts and it’s one-for one late, Brec getting the last blow in before the bell, a straight right to the navel that has Williams grimacing with gut-hurt. It’s encouraging late round work for the Puncher, but Michelle rides her dominant early work to a close win in round number one.

R2: Bassinger’s juices were flowing at the back end of stanza uno and she takes it to Williams out of the gate in numero dos. Mishy’s trying to time the circling Brec, but Williams is a step slow and receives some noggin-snapping paybacks for her misses. A huffing, frustrated Mishy is head hunting mid-round, but Bassinger is staying out of range, bipping Williams on the beak. Michelle’s defenses are failing her and Brec throws a blistering combo that connects on both ends, Mishy rocked, her legs giving a shimmy. Bassinger throws an add-on lefty hook to the ribs and a bug-eyed Williams takes a seat on the middle strand. Full throttle Brec! Bassinger’s leather can’t be contained by a foundering Mishy. Williams is trying to cover all vulnerable locations within a tight shell but Brec’s cracking it consistently, alternating between bosom and jaw. Late, Michelle responds to the ref’s call to action by escaping the ropes via a tight clinch. The veteran stuffs a few ‘close quarters’ rights into ribs and the side of Bassinger’s chest, but Brec’s remaining frisky to the bell. She shoves out of Mishy’s embrace, clocking Williams with another shiny display of foot and glovework the Hall of Famer eats flush to the face. The bell rings on a frowning, grunting Williams. Mishy trudges to her stool, while Brec’s eyes are like Christmas lights, Bassinger vibrating to her corner, taking the second round wide.

R3: More of the same from Brec! She’s throwing out energy Mishy won’t or can’t match. Bassinger’s on her bicycle and Williams can’t find the range. Michelle is lunging then finding Brec’s gone from her punch-path when leather arrives. And Bassinger’s seemingly always ready with a jab as punishment for coming up empty, occasionally adding a follow-up heavier right. One mid-round jacks Williams’ jaw and Mishy’s stumbling through fencepost holes, her arms flailing to keep her balanced. With the crowd roaring for the up-n-comer, Michelle regains her equilibrium and an overzealous overhand right from Bassinger is short-circuited by an uppercut to Brec’s tummy, Mishy gutting Bassinger, the young blonde doubling over, her eyes bulging. With both women’s bodies humming with hurt, there’s a lot of toe to toe, seemingly suited for Mishy, but Bassinger meets Williams salvos with plenty of her own. Each blonde stings her opposite number, the impacts coming fast and furious, defense purely optional down the stretch and the fans are LOVING IT. ‘Ooohs’ and ‘Ohs’ are on a loop as the fighters seem determined to make this a short night’s work. But both are standing at the bell. They lean into each other and whisper sweet nothings before the official breaks them apart and heads the flaxen-haired pugilists in opposite directions, Brec claiming a second straight on points, though this one’s close.

R4: The combatants are unsurprisingly reserved out of the box, both sets of arms lowered, the spring in their step more of a shuffle to the middle, the mercurial pace catching up with the blondes. With the movements slowed, the fighting becomes intimate and Mishy’s chugging, inexorable aggressiveness shines. Williams is taking body by the bucketful and it’s a teaching moment for Brec, Bassinger bullied into her own corner where Williams runs rampant. The jugg work is expert and the PLP crew pleads with their girl to find an escape. Easier said than done as Michelle’s carved out her career with such muggings. When the ref breaks them, Bassinger gets her chances to collect a few connections as Williams works her way back in, but this is an aggravated assault on poor Brec. Down the stretch, Bassinger forces her way out and survives the round, Mishy chasing her to the bell, bellowing a warning toward the little miss as a wincing Bassinger heads home, losing the fourth wide.

R5: Michelle’s ready for bulldozing, striding confidently toward Bassinger, the youngster still bruised from Williams’ best round. Brec’s barely out of her corner when Mishy’s on her. Williams forgoes her entry left for a righty slobberknocker from Jump Street, but the Pretty Little Puncher bobs under the early cannon shot and thumps a meaty thwack into Mishy’s liver. The force has Michelle gurgling as she tries to pivot into retreat when a lightning left crashes into Mishy’s temple and the Hall of Famer’s hurting. Williams reaches for Brec’s shoulders to pull her into a clinch, but Bassinger slips out of Michelle’s reach and pounds a combination into Mishy’s chest. The ambush draws Williams’ defenses down and Brec’s ready with a left hook to the jaw that draws a gasp from the crowd and a limp leg from the veteran. Mishy’s staggered, concern filling her hazel eyes as she pushes out a ‘don’t hurt me’ left Bassinger brushes aside like she’s the legendary badass. Michelle’s all hers and Brec dives in like she’s eating hot dogs at Coney Island, swabbing Mishy, turning Williams into a hot mess with wicked combinations that have Michelle bundled into a corner and covering in desperation. “Finish her,” comes the urgent instruction from the PLP corner, Lucy Hale adamant that Brec can stick a fork in the battered icon. And Bassinger is relentless, sending leather in tidal waves into chest and chin. The Puncher is tearing Mishy asunder, but the official won’t stop it. Not with Michelle’s rep. And when the fateful fifth ends, Williams has imploded into a tight protective ball but she hasn’t tasted canvas. Maybe Brec should be worried about not finishing Mishy, but she’s not showing it, bouncing back to her side of town with a smile and a high five for Lucy. Across the way, Michelle shudders to her corner full of slack-jawed onlookers. Dove tries to be supportive, but she’s as dazed as the rest of the HISC seconds at Brec’s shutout fifth.

R6: The time between rounds takes forever on the Puncher side. For Michelle, it passes in the blink of a half-closed eye. But Michelle’s off her stool and meeting an energetic Brec at center stage. The animated youngster is bobbing and weaving around Michelle’s sluggish offerings when MISHY’S ROCKED by a buzzsaw right cross to the cheek. A left to the chin puts the unsteady Williams back on her heels before another cracking right connects to the jaw. MICHELLE TIMBERS TO HER SIDE. The crowd’s gone apeshit with Williams downed and barely stirring as Bassinger hustles to a neutral corner. Mishy’s trying to rise at SIX, but she flops from all fours to a wide starfish, the last few seconds passing her by uneventfully with the EIGHT…NINE…TEN!.

The ref calls for the bell and pandemonium.

‘Consortium Killer’ Brec Bassinger takes it with a KO6 over Michelle Williams in the first minute, piling on to her dominant 5th with an emphatic exclamation point.

Mishy needs smelling salts for wake-up time, Williams slow to realize what’s happened as she’s carried under each arm to her corner.

Brec is surrounded by partying Pretty Little Punchers. Bassinger’s not saying but Lucy will.

“Hell yes she deserves another title shot,” Hale pronounces. “Whether it’s Dove or Cierra. It doesn’t matter. Will she get it? Cameron doesn’t want anything to do with her. I know that much. The kid’s not loud but she’s got star power. She’ll get there.”

If Brec never thought she’d get to walk Mishy before her first win against the legend, this time she collects a whimpering Williams like an old hand. Arm around her victim’s shoulders, she shows off a wilting Michelle to her beaming Puncher cohorts.

Brec forces Mishy into a corner chest first and climbs to the middle ropes behind her, pie-facing Williams’ head from behind.

“Are you believing it this time?” Brec shouts in Williams’ ear. “You better. I’m coming for your girl next. Let her know.”
