Karlie Kloss vs. Camille Kostek
(Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)
BEFORE:
Battle of, arguably, the two most successful welters who've never worn the belts. And, two very, very different stories. Kloss burst onto the scene in 2016 with a seven-fight winning streak. The loss in her eighth contest came in a battle for the welterweight gold that she very nearly won. Karlie stayed a top contender through 2017 and 2018...and then the bottom fell out. A woman who was 17-8 in her first 25 bouts has gone 8-20 since and fallen out of contention for the straps she nearly won in fight number eight. Karlie, however, just turned 30, very young for welter, and clearly has the talent to turn this around. "I've proven I can beat the top girls," the supermodel insists. "I'm starting to pull things together again. And, beating Camille is the next step to doing that."
As for Camille, well. In just about any other FCBA stable, she'd be the number one welter. But, not at Bonzo's, where she shares a stable with the MDE, Amanda Righetti. None of that has stopped Kostek from making an impression, mind. The hard-hitting blonde is 21-11 against top competition. She's won the Diamond Boxing Tournament, and she's got wins over most of the top welters. What she HASN'T done, however, is claim the welter gold. "Slow year for me," the blonde admits. "Two fights. One win. But, now's the time to get rolling. And, that's exactly what I'm going to do."
ROUND ONE:
Not if Kloss can help it, Camille, and, in the first, she absolutely can. Karlie has length even most welters can only dream of, and she puts it to excellent use. She's got the long left poke working perfectly, getting it in Camille's face and keeping it there. Kostek taken completely out of what she wants to do, as the brunette keeps her at range, drops solid right hands on her, and, eventually, gets her on the back foot. Blonde's working hard, moving, trying to angle, but nothing is working for her in the opening stanza. Instead, it's Karlie getting into rhythm, not just scoring on the blonde, but PUNISHING her with hard right hand after hard right hand. It's a reminder of what Kloss can be when she's got everything working. When the bell finally rings, Karlie's taken it wide and grabbed the 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
Kostek adjusts. She can't get taller, so she gets SHORTER. She gets the hands up, goes into a half crouch, works on picking off that jab and stepping to, where she can bring her impressive power to bear. Result is that a one-way fight suddenly becomes two-way and all about the terms. When Karlie can pick off Camille on her way in, Kloss does much the same stuff as she did in the first, following the jab with good right hands, scoring points, and punishing the blonde. But, when Kostek gets inside where she can bang, she's the one getting the work done. She's hooking ribs, tenderizing tummy, going upstairs, down, back up, offsetting what Karlie's doing at range. As a result, it's a near-run thing as far as the scorecards, but, when the bell rings, it's Camille who gets the round and the points, evening things at 19.
ROUND THREE:
Camille getting rolling now. She's finding ways past Karlie's defenses and working over the taller woman when she gets inside. Kloss tries banging with at points, but it's the blonde getting much the better of things when she does, because Kostek's doing a great job of getting the brunette off balance in there, bumping and leveraging as she works all that long body while paying plenty of attention to the head. By the final minute, Karlie's found a cheat code. She wraps up, using that length in a different way. She's looping the arm around Camille's neck, pulling the head down, forcing the ref to break them and give Kloss the space she wants. It's effective. But, it's too late to matter in round three, which Camille has taken wide to pull into a 29-28 lead.
ROUND FOUR:
Good, two-way round this time, as both ladies keep to their work arounds. Camille in that crouch working forward, getting inside, banging body then going upstairs. Karlie keeping those forays short by tying up, holding on, forcing breaks. Kloss getting her points when she can get space, keep the blonde at bay. Kostek limits that by her constant forward movement. It's all about who gets the most of what she wants, and, fact is, in this stanza, neither fighter gets nearly enough of it for her own liking. Instead, it's bits and pieces of offense from first brunette and then blonde. Add it all up, and you've got a very close round that isn't decided until Kloss gets something going late, landing a set of nice combinations that keeps Camille at bay and gives Karlie the round and the points, evening things at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Same again. Kostek wants to close, Kloss wants space. BOOM! Right hand, KARLIE and DOWN GOES CAMILLE! Kloss has been trying to time that right for rounds now, and she finally does it, sending the blonde crashing to her back. Brunette bouncing quickly to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Kostek sitting up at six, gets to her feet at nine, barely beating the count. Ref thinks about it during the mandatory, but waves on Karlie! Brunette banging away with both hands now, driving the blonde into the ropes and then calling in the heavy guns. Taller woman on the verge of victory here as she batters the blonde. Camille hanging on desperately, jabbing back, trying to run clock. Ref looking in carefully, but Kostek somehow manages to stay upright and hold him off until the bell. It's a huge 10-8 round for Karlie, though, and she leads 48-46 at the half.
ROUND SIX:
Karlie walking forward behind that long left now. She's got a wobbling Camille on the back foot and aims to keep her there while she works to finish this thing. Blonde giving ground, keeping the guard high, looking to play for time here. Kloss sitting down on everything, determined to find the 'off' switch. BOOM! Right hand counter, CAMILLE! Kostek manages to set the feet and land a PERFECT counter and Kloss is steppin' in fence post holes. Blonde quickly over to the offensive, winging away with both hands and DOWN GOES KARLIE after a brutal three-punch combination! Brunette splashed to her back. Blonde to a neutral corner to watch and wait. No movement at ALL from Kloss, though. She's OUT! It's OVER! And your winner by KO6 in comeback fashion is Camille Kostek!
AFTER:
Kostek battered and bruised but still plenty happy about tonight's result. "She caught me one, sure," says the blonde with a smile. "But, with all the length SHE has, that's going to happen. It was about shaking it off and getting back after her, breaking her down. And, that's EXACTLY what I did."
