Katy Perry vs. Yvonne Strahovski

(Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)

BEFORE:

Two fighters who've been among the lightweight elite for a decade now squaring off for the fourth time. Vonnie currently leads the series 2-1, but she hasn't forgotten that the "1" ended her lightweight title reign back in 2014. "She's been top shelf for a long time," Vonnie admits, "And, a nightmare to fight at this weight with that welter power she has. We've had some great fights over the years, and I always look forward to testing myself against her."

The respect is clearly mutual, as the brunette has plenty of good things to say about the blonde. "There's a reason she's in the Hall of Fame, and it's because, for the last decade plus, there hasn't been anyone in this division as good as she is. She's gotten me the last two times we fought, and, tonight, it's time to even the score."

ROUND ONE:

Ladies showing more of that respect early. Setting up at range, working the jab, probing, boxing well. Oh, remember that welter power Vonnie was talking about? BOOM! PERRY ROCKS STRAHOVSKI! It's a NASTY right hand that sends the Aussie beauty stumbling backward with only the ropes keeping her on her feet! And the brunette is ALL IN, HAMMERING away with both hands as the Aussie forms the earmuff on the ropes. Katy looking to blast the blonde out in round one and from the referee's intent stare, she's clearly close to doing it. But. The blonde is a Hall of Famer for MANY reasons. She's smart. She's slick. She's determined. And, she uses every trick in the book to hang in there as Katy pummels her right to the bell. When it rings, Perry's taken it wide and leads 10-9, but Straho is still standing.

ROUND TWO:

Katy in full control. Power hitting brunette walking the wobbly blonde down, banging solid shot to head and body. Aussie beauty playing good defense here, keeping the hands high, blocking and slipping as best she can, but there's a lot of fire coming her way, and some of it is bound to get through. Nothing sloppy from Katy. She's setting things up with the jab, moving the feet, hooking ribs and tummy in spots. She's piling up both points and hurt, all in search of the stoppage, which Vonnie continues to skillfully avert. Final thirty seconds sees Katy turn up the heat, forcing the blonde to the ropes and working more body. Vonnie ships the shell and remains afloat. At the bell, Katy's pitched a shutout and extended her lead to 20-18, but, again, Yvonne is still standing.

ROUND THREE:

Third begins with Yvonne moving much better. She's working the left hand, angling, frustrating Perry's attempts to walk her down. Katy's seen this show before and she's not falling into any traps here. Instead, she understands the time for full forward is over and now it's time to work at gunnery range. And, that's exactly what the two rangy lights do for the remainder of the round. It's good, two way stuff. Excellent boxing with movement of heads, hands, feet. And, no one really gains much of an advantage, as both fighters are plenty good at this. Final thirty sees, predictably, both women turn up the heat in an effort to steal the points, but no one really manages to gain much of an advantage, as blonde and brunette both manage to land some solid shot before the bell ends a nice tactical round. It's cat-whisker close on the cards, but Vonnie gets on the board, cutting Perry's lead to 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

More of the same. We've seen this before between these two fighters, both of whom are comfortable boxing at range, and, still, after all these years, it's great stuff. Blonde looking to set things up with the jab, working angles. Brunette playing the same geometry game and doing so very, very well. Everybody working hard to get to spots, and, when they get there, getting off quickly in combination. Of course, a lot of that stuff, as accurate as it is, doesn't land, because these two veterans know a thing or three about defense, and they play it well. All in all, it's the kind of round you can use to break down and teach young fighters how to do this kind of thing, an excellent tactical round in which both fighters score well and no one really gains an edge. At the bell, though, it's Vonnie who's got the points narrowly again, evening things at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Pattern now set. Ranged boxing is what we're going to get, as both fighters feel comfortable here, and no one wants to force the issue, especially against a girl who can and WILL make hear pay for doing that. Result is more good, two-way stuff with no one gaining an edg...BOOM! Right hand, KATY and DOWN GOES VONNIE! There's that welter power again as Perry drops Strahovski with a BRUTAL right hand! Brunette to a neutral corner. Vonnie down on her back, staring up at the referee. Sits up at six. Gets to her feet at eight. Takes the mandatory. And. ON COMES KATY! Perry batters the blonde back into the ropes and calls in the artillery. She's throwing everything she has at the older woman, determined to take her out of there. But, again, the Aussie beauty keeps the 'off' button well hidden and does enough to keep the ref at bay. When the bell rings, Katy's back up two, 48-46 after a huge 10-8 round.

ROUND SIX:

Sixth begins with Perry pushing forward, backing up Vonnie, making with the heavy leather. Straho managing, keeping the guard high, jabbing back in spots, trying to slow the brunette down. Aussie doing a good job with the fighting retreat, but it's the American who's getting the better of things. BOOM! Right hand counter, VONNIE and DOWN GOES KATY! A SCINTILLATING right from Strahovski drops Perry to her back. Now it's Yvonne who heads to a neutral corner. Ref counting down on Katy. Brunette rolling to hands and knees at six. Getting to her feet at eight...stumbling...REF WAVING IT OFF! Katy up but glassy eyed and wobbly and the referee has seen enough! It's OVER! And your winner by KO6 in sudden comeback fashion is Yvonne Strahovski!

AFTER:

Vonnie puffed up but smiling in the post. "I TOLD you about that power, and I should have LISTENED to me," she says with a laugh. "She can really hit. Add in how good she is, and, it's like I said. A very difficult task. But, I've always been good at handling those, haven't I?"
