KELLI BERGLUND VS BREC BASSINGER

Results: Lookout Writing: Archer

Kelli: 26 YO, 5’4 (1.63 m), 1-3-0 , 1 KO since 2017, Queens of Absolution

Brec: 23 YO, 5’2 (1.57 m), 16-9-0, 16 KO since 2019, Pretty Little Punches

Before: Brec Bassinger, smarting from the loss of her FCBA Flyweight belt now finds herself answering the challenge Kelli Berglund. Is Ms. Berglund and her QofA management seeing the fallen champion as vulnerable?

“Of course, Bassinger being in need of a bounce-back fight improved out chances of getting the fight for me,” Kelli Berglund says frankly. “What you are all overlooking is that this is a ‘bounce-back’ fight for me. I lost to Mia Khafila on that card and what better way to erase that bad memory than beat a former champion like Brec. It’s all very simple.”

“OK, it was no fun losing my title belt,” admits Brec Bassinger, “but I am clear about what to do about it: win fights and then win more fights until I can win back that belt. The road starts here. Though I suspect Kelli won’t underestimate me like she did Khafila. Gosh, that turned so badly for you, didn’t it, Kelli?”

Kelli’s cheeks start to burn red: “I did not underestimate her and I certainly don’t overrate you.”

“Kelli, I have had 15 more wins that you. I think that deserves a pretty high rating,” Brec pointed out.

“I am not going to argue numbers with you,” Kelli retorted after a long pause. “I will make my points in the ring.”

Brec smiled wickedly: “So will I and I’ll have a lot more of them that you!”

“You wish!” spat out the indignant Kelli.

The bad feelings were still clearly still strong as the two stood glaring at each other across the ring on Fight Night. Kelli Berglund was in a light blue bikini with dark blue boots and gloves with light blue laces. Kelli’s blonde hair was pulled back in a battle braid. Brec was in a black bikini with white gloves and boots with black laces. Brec’s blonde hair is piled in a top knot. Kelli tries to take advantage of her two inch height advantage by bodying up on Brec, who defiantly stands her ground, hands on hips glaring up at Kelli. The referee has to step in and admonish the pair to restore order (though it seems to have the crowd excited and eager to see what next). The referee then manages to get through the instructions. There is a curt slap of the gloves before Brec and Kelli go to their corners. The bell rings.

R1: Brec goes for Kelli’s chin early and often with her opening punches. Kelli’s head bobbing up and down from the blows before she can scoot back out of range. Brec gives chase. Now she’s working Kelli to the body, hooking her solidly in the ribs and abs. Kelli trying to steady herself offers a few counters, but these aren’t discouraging the former champ. Brec now circling, then reversing and bouncing quick strikes off the sides of Kelli’s head. Kelli forced to cover up and Brec then finishes with another burst of hooks to the midsection. BB wins round wide.

R2: Kelli showing much more aggression this round. She is out quickly and gives Brec solid rights and lefts to the jaw. Then Kelli hooks Brec hard to the belly. Brec under pressure now, she fights back with the jab and then mounts an attack of her own on Kelli’s body. Suddenly the two of them are toe to toe and pumping in the body busters. Brec trying to stand firm, but seems to wilt and fall back as the round is ending. Kelli Berglund wins a close round.

R3: Kelli again out quickly and this time she feints an attack on Brec’s body to draw down her guard. Then Kelli blasts Brec with rights and lefts to the jaw and chin. Brec’s head getting knocked up/down, left and right. Brec stumbling back, trying to slow down Kelli with the jab but Kelli fights through the jab and hammers Brec to the body. Brec is hunched down, mitts up around her head and trying to steady herself as Kelli keeps the punches coming hard and fast. Bell sounds and Brec’s gasping for air with a stunned look on her face. Kelli smiling at the results of her efforts. Judges give KB the round wide.

R4: Now Kelli comes in close on Brec. She seems to be trying to punch the smaller blonde into the ropes., Brec fighting back hard and the punch rate is soaring for both. The sound of wet leather on sweat flesh can be hear by ringsiders as well as the grunts of effort as Brec and Kelli try to get the maximum lower into their punches. It is staying very even most of the way, but then Kelli’s hooks start drawing gasps from Brec as she strains for air. Brec still fighting back, but she has to give ground more and more. She looks ready to have her butt against the strands when the bell rings. Round is another win for Kelli Berglund, but this one was a lot closer.

R5: Brec comes charging from her corner at the bell. She promptly pastes Kelly across the chops with a right and lifts her chin with a left. Kelli lurches back as Brec jumps forward, trying to get at Kelli’s head again, but Kelli protecting her head well. Brec then shifts to working over Kelli to the body, but Kelli is able to stabilize her defenses Kelli fighting back with body punches of her own. Once more they are going at it toe-to-toe at point-blank range whacking away with determination. As the round is closing out, Brec suddenly slips an uppercut into Kelli’s chin that sends tremors through Kelli’s legs. Kelli lurching back, but time runs out before Brec can take advantage. The late shift in tactics appears to have gained BB a narrow win on the round.

R6: Kelli moves out quickly as the new round begins apparently intent on regaining control of this fight. However Brec is waiting for her and Kelli is banged up hard to the head, chin and jaw by Brec’s counters. Kelli has to drop back and circle, looking for a fresh angle of attack, but Brec not waiting. Brec steps forward fakes with the left to draw Kelli off balance and then lands a BIG right hand against Kelli’s jaw. Kelli’s head twisted and her knees buckle. Brec fires in double uppercuts to the chin AND DOWN GOES KELLI! Kelli topples onto her side and rolls on her back, one arm thrown across her eyes. Brec trots to the neutral corner. Referee moves in. Kelli trying to push herself up into a sitting position as the referee counts. Kelli attempts to rise further, but shudders and falls back. She is sitting on the canvas with a sad look on her face as referee calls out:

“EIGHT!...NINE!...TEN!...YOU’RE OUT!”

THE WINNER: BREC BASSINGER DEFEATS KELLI BERGLUND KO6!

After: “I will admit that Kelli gave me some problems, but I got my act together and won the fight. It was simple as that,” Brec tells press. “I am just glad not to stuck in a losing streak. Those are rough.” (She glances pointedly at Kelli Berglund who is being helped to her corner). “What’s next for me? I’ll have to wait see how the rest of the card turns out. It may give me some good ideas for my coming fights.”

Kelli Berglund clearly very disappointed in the results of this fight. “I know I could have taken her. I know it! I will prove myself yet!”

Kelli Berglund certainly did give Brec Bassinger some problems in Rounds 2-4, but Brec was still standing and came back to win it in the 6th.Brec Bassinger needed a good bounce-back win and she got it. It may take her a while to get there, but it is clear her objective for 2023 is to regain that Flyweight Title belt. Meanwhile, Kelli Berglund needs to go from merely showing talent to scoring wins , which would make a fine objective for the new year.
