OLIVIA RODRIGO VS DANIELLE ROSE RUSSELL

Results: Lookout Writing: Archer

Olivia: 20 YO, 5’5 (1.65 m), 11-0-0, 11 KO since 2021, Front Street

Danielle: 23 YO, 5’3 (1.69 m), 9-10-0,9 KO since 2017 Foxfire Boxing

Before: “Front Street is trying to broaden my exposure. I’ve done very well as the Asylum Arena, but I’ve always known I would need to prove I can win into other venues. I have done some of that already and this is just part of that. Russell is a good choice for me, she’s a Dani Fishel-style small, but tough bantam. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot fighting her.” A chatty Olivia Rodrigo told the press in the pre-fight.

“I am flattered to be compared to Dani Fishel,” says Dani R, “but y goak here is a small one: to get back to ,500. Last year was a struggle. I lost 3 in a row before turning it around with a win against Jordyn Johnson, One more win and I’ll be at 10-10. That’s plenty for me this time out.”

The presser ends with Danielle and Olivia eyeing each other warily. Anxious for the contest to begin and trying not to show it.

Fight night finds the two young boxers facing off against each other as the referee drones through the instructions. Olivia is in a black one piece swimsuit with white gloves and boots. Her dark hair pulled back in a little knot in the back of her head. Danielle in dark red one piece swimsuit with matching boots and gloves. Her hair is in a French braid. The instructions are covered. Gloves are tapped and the fighter adjourn to their corners. The bell rings.

R1: DRR pressing hard against Olivia as the bout gets started. Dani R is trying to drive Olivia back into the ropes while churning away at her midsection with one fast punch after the other. Olivia looks confused at first and takes a lot of leather before she start pushing out her counters. Olivia making a stand to stay off the rope, but now getting hit in the jaw, chin and side of the face. Olivia using her jab, but it doesn’t seem to be discouraging Danielle maintains the pressure until the bell sounds. Danielle Rose Russell wins round by a wide margin on points.

R2: Olivia strikes at Dani from a distance and this serves to keep from getting close again. DRR keeps trying to press forward which leads to increasingly bitter exchanges—mostly to the head and DRR is clearly getting the worst of these. Face swollen, bruised and bleeding, DRR is forced to break off the unsuccessful attacks. This is the clue for Olivia to counterattack and she drives the lumped up Dani R back, though DRR taking care to stay away the ropes. Olivia showing a good variety of pitches as she keeps Dani confused as to where the next punch flurry is headed. Very nice round that ends in a wide win for Olivia.

R3: Olivia now crowding forward on Dani and Dani is fighting back. Very quickly this turns into a body battle of attrition. The two are pressing against each other (several times referee has to intervene to separate them) glaring int each other’s eyes as they bring their leather covered fists against each other’s bodies. The fierce battle seems even much of the way, but late in the round, Olivia able to get something extra into the power of her punches. DRR is hooked harder and harder to the belly until she is stutter-stepping backwards, bent over and gasping for air. Dani does rally to stop Olivia’s advance, but Olivia has done enough to edge Danielle out on the judges’ cards to win the round.

R4: Danielle comes out quickly at the bell and goes into a leaping attack that slams her right ioff Olivia’s head. Olivia goes reeling back as Dani follows up with a shifting barrage of head and body shots. Olivia under pressure, retreats, but then gets her jab going and is able to stabilize her front. Dani then bobs and weaves, trying to draw Olivia off balance. It takes a bit, but DRR is patient and eventually she’s able to slip up some good straight rights and lefts to lump up Olivia’s face. Olivia showing courage in hanging in against these painful blows and continuing to stand her ground. However, with blood trickling from a cut along her right cheekbones and some nasty facial bruises, Olivia looking battle worn after the bell. However she did manage to keep the round close and DRR wins it by a only a narrow margin.

R5: Front Street corner team works hard to clean up Olivia who is seen scowling over at DRR who ignores her. Then the bell rings, Olivia and Dani out promptly. Olivia seems to know just what she wants to do, she charges into Dani, bushes aside DRR’s defensive punches and starts plowing her gloves fists into DRR’s face. DRR seems stunned as Olivia seems intent on turning her face into raw hamburger. Dani slow to get her mitts up and then Olivia driving vengeance-powered uppercuts into her chin. Danielle is PROPELLED back into the ropes and then gets her head smashed from side to side. DOWN GOES DANI. DRR is sliding down the ropes. Olivia looks like she wants to hold her up for more punishment, but referee intervenes. Official orders an obviously angry Olivia to the neutral corner, while poor Danielle has landed in a sitting position with a stunned look on her bruised and bloody face. Referee starts counting and to the surprise of a good many in the crowd, Dani totters slowly to her feet using the ropes to help. Referee allows the fight to resume (a number of people in crowd boo their dissent from this decision, but it is plainly what Danielle wants). Danielle trying to hoist her gloves up to at least protect her face, but Olivia has no trouble smashing her own gloves between Dani’s she wrecks further havoc on Dani’s face. Dani thrown back into the ropes and Olivia pounces on her with MORE face punching. Ringsiders yelling at the referee to stop the carnage and AT LAST REFEREE STOPS FIGHT! Referee cradles Dani to safety as a clearly happy Olivia Rodrigo lists both arms in triumph!

THE WINNER: OLIVIA RODRIGO DEFEATS DANIELLE ROSE RUSSELL TKO5!

AFTER: “I guess I showed her!” Olivia Rodrigo declared in the post fight. “It’s not so much that she punched me in the face is that I could tell she enjoyed it. I hope she enjoyed the payback!”

“I have no idea what Rodrigo is talking about,” Danielle said (much) later with her face still bruised and swollen. “I was just punching at what was available—her face. Anything else is purely her imagination—or her excuse for busting me up! Well they are only cuts and bruises. They will heal. Don’t think I will forget this Olivia Rodrigo. I don’t have a lot of enemies but you just joined the list.”

Olivia comments later: “I am on her ‘Enemies List’? Oh, that is really scary. It all just goes to show she can dish it out but she can’t take it. I proved I can beat her down and I’ll do ut again any time she wants!”

Hard feelings left in the aftermath of this fight. Who knows what will happen next (if anything). But thi was a lively contest while it lasted. An 11-0 fighter beating a 9-10 fighter wasn’t exactly an upset, but it was a fight that Olivia Rodrigo needed to win to help establish herself. Disappointing loss for Danielle Rose Russell who really could have used a win to bolster her record. It will be interesting to see if the ill-will left by this fight has longer term consequences, but, in the meantime, fans can look forward to see what their next outings look like.
