Mary: 38 YO, 5’8 (1.73 m), 74-56-0,68 KO since 2007, Foxfire Boxing

Before: “For once I am the one eager for the fight,” Yvonne Strahvoski announced at the pre0-fight press event. “Mary won our last fight and went ahead 9-8. I want to get things tied up again so I can retake the lead. Plus I want to see Mary in that Sexy French Maid’s outfit for TWO weeks not just one.”

“I wouldn’t be so eager to change the terms, if I were you, Vonnie,” Mary purred, “because you know I drool at seeing you in that outfit. It just goes to show age is just a number. No one would realize you’re in Cougar Territory.”

“Just exploring it ahead of you, Winnie, dear, I am always reassured to know I have you saying how hot and sexy I am,” Yvonne replied.

“It’s only he truth and besides, I also just like pounding you into pudding,” Mary said, “it musi to my ears when I hear those gasps and groans late in the fight.”

“This time you will be the one doing the gasping and groaning. I am going to kick your big ass and reassert my domination!” Yvonne informed her.

“You’re going to try, but once again you will serving me tea and saying ‘Will, Madame have one lump or two?” Mary teased.

“Hah! Dream on Mary-Liz, you be serving me good Australian beer and the only lumps will be the ones I’ve given you!”

“See you in the ring my “Awesome Aussie’.” Mary said.

“Indeed I am, see you then,” Yvonne concluded.

The night of the fight Yvonne enters the ring and removed her robe to reveal a navy blue bikini with matching boots and gloves (gold laces). Her hair is pulled back in a battle braid. Mary makes her entrance and removes her robe . She is wearing one of her favorite outfits a retro red one piece swimsuit with white polka. Mary also wears white boots and gloves with red lacings. Her hair is bobbed, kept loose, but wetted down. Now that decision time is near, both ladies look focused and determined. Ring instructions are gone over crisply. Gloves are tapped smartly and quick walks to respective corners then occurs. Tense pause. DING! The bell has sounded.

R1: Mary going at Yvonne with a heavy burst of jabs that punished Yvonne to the face and head. Yvonne ducking back, tried to circle around, but Mary stayed with her and kept up the steady jabbing. Yvonne continued to struggle with her counters while Mary kept up her jabs, but then these shifted into right crosses and left hooks. Yvonne getting struck mainly to jaw, chin and side of the head. Mary mixes in some hooks to the ribs for variety as Yvonne grows defensive, covering up and managing only a few fast jabs of her own late. Bell rings are MEW has won a wide victory this round.

R2: Yvonne makes a noticeable effort to be first out of her corner this round and draws first blood (literally) with a straight shot into Mary’s nose which starts leaking scarlet. Mary seems staggered by the blow and falls back. Yvonne moving with her now going after Mary to the body with power hooks to the rib cage. Mary soon is tipping forward, bent at the waist as now Yvonne can work over those overhanging breasts. Mary trying to fight back, but now she is the one unable to get a good counterattack going. Mary driven into defensive posture as Yvonne looks quite pleased with the payback punishment she is unleashing. Yvonne coolly maintaining the pressure to the bell. Judges give the round to Yvonne by a wide margin.

R3: Winnie comes bouncing out of her corner and opens with hard hooks to Yvonne’s belly and then a swiping right off the jaw. Yvonne staggered by that jaw shot, hastily covers up as Mary swarms in striking at Yvonne’s shoulders and flanks. Mary pounding away in an apparent effort to wear down Yvonne’s arm strength. Yvonne trying to jab Mary back, but Mary keeps pressing forward. Yvonne senses she is being pushed into the ropes and fights back in an exchange if lashing body shots, then a right to the chin sends Yvonne toppling back against the ropes. Mary pounds Yvonne’s torso as Yvonne buries her face in her gloves, Mary looking very intense as she strains to bring the mighty Aussie down, but Yvonne’s legs stand firm. Bell sounds and Mary drops back with an irked look on her face and Yvonne gives her a defiant, but weary smile before turning away. Round to MEW wide.

R4: Yvonne and Mary both out fast this round and they clash at midring with big shots to the head. Both are knocked to one side, but quickly turn back to resume the action. Punches going head and body, body and head with all-out effort from both fighters. Then they settle down for some up-close-and-personal body busting action. The pair are pouring on the torso punishment from breasts to belly and into the ribs. Hard, sweaty attrition that is calling forth maximum effort from both fighters. Mary gains upper hand late when she finds Yvonne’s solar plexus and smites it hard. Yvonne falls back shuddering and gasping for air. Mary trying for a finishing shot to the head, but Yvonne able to block these. Round ends in a hard-fought narrow win for Mary Winstead.

R5: Mary and Yvonne again out quickly and move to the center of the ring. They circle each other briefly, then they both move forward, but this time it Yvonne is the first to land strong. A jab catches Mary between the eyes, momentarily stunning her and Yvonne then brings right./left combo against Mary’s chin followed by a right uppercut to the chin. Mary’s legs shudder as she stumbles backwards, mitts up around her face. Yvonne now pounds Mary’s midsection doubling her up and sending her spilling backwards into the ropes. Mary trying to fight her way off the strands with desperate jabbing, but after eating one flurry of face punches that leaves her nose bleeding again, she covers her face with her gloves and waits it out. Yvonne having a real workout as she scrubs Mary’s writhing body with waves of leather fury. Mary sagging against the ropes, but not going down. Yvonne just pounds away until the bell rings. Mary grabbing the top rope to steady herself while she catches her breath. Yvonne surveys the damage and then walks away with a determined look. Round goes wie to Yvonne Strahovski.

R6: MEW worked on frantically by the Foxfire corner people. Foxfire Lightweight trainer Rachel Nichols urgently talks to her. Mary is listening, clearly trying to pull herself together after the beating she just took, and gets determinedly to her feet as the bell sounds. Mary is moving more warily as Yvonne comes at her. Yvonne opens to the body, Mary taking it and offering some sharp jabs to the bra cups. Yvonne then circles and tries to draw Mary off balance. Mary not biting. More jabbing, stinging Yvonne to the breasts and a scowl is forming on Yvonne’s face. Then Yvonne suddenly lunges forward looking to bring a lightning right against Mary’s jaw, but Mary turns her shoulder to block the shot and then fires back a thunderbolt right into Yvonne’s chin. Vonnie caught by surprise, her head snaps back and Mary fires in another right uppie. DOWN GIES YVONNE! Yvonne stumbling forward just collapses onto her face. Mary backs off with a pleased look on her face and then heads for the neutral corner. Yvonne stirring as the referee starts to count, she pushes herself up and looks around, then realizes what has happened to her. Yvonne then struggles to her feet, beating the count at “NINE!” Mary seen to sign and then come forward at the ref’s signal.

Yvonne taking the prudent course after the knockdown. She goes face-in-gloves and leaves Mary with not much to punch. Mary does work those shoulders and flanks in the time remaining. She has been around long enough to know she’s not going to be finishing Yvonne off this round. At the bell, Mary has easily won the round thanks to the knockdown. Fans eagerly wait to see what happens in the next round.

R7: Now it’s the Lookout corner people working hard on their busted up fighter. They apparently do a good job because Yvonne is off her stool promptly at the bell. Mary is head right for Yvonne, but just as they are getting within punching range, Yvonne blasts Mary with a big shot to her right eye. Mary recoils in shock and confusion. Yvonne then bashes away at Mary to the chin and jaw. Mary thrown into confusion can only keep falling back until Yvonne has managed to drive her the length the ring. As Mary’s rear end hits the ropes, she does bury her face in her gloves and takes a seat. Once again Mary is subjected to a Yvonne body beat down. Yvonne very methodical in this torso battering. She pauses at the breasts, the rib cage and the abs to give each of them a thorough going over. Mary is gasping and groaning under this barrage and her knees do seem to starting to buckle. Starting to, but they don’t actually give way until the bell sounds. Then Mary slides to her knees and tries to suck in air.

“Don’t you think its time to quit?: Yvonne suggests.

Mary looks up defiantly: “When have I ever quit against you? I’m not done. I’m NOT done!”

With that, Mary pulls herself to her feet. Yvonne shakes her head: “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Mary just gives a fiat snort and makes her way towards her corner. Yvonne shrugs and heads for her own stool. She has won this round in a shutout.

R8: Observers on the edge of their seats wondering if Mary Elizabeth Winstead can come back from the beating she took in the last round. The Foxfire crew do their best but Mary is moving with effort and looks drained. Nevertheless she does come forward and starts bacpunching as soon as she can get close enough. Yvonne holding back at first, warily checking to make sure this isn’t some trick by Mary to lure her in, but she apparently concluded it is not. When that happens, Yvonne goes right to the body and white-hot pain surges through Mary’s torso making her hunch up with hurt. Then Yvonne shifts to a blows to the head and as Mary falters, she sees the chance of an opening and slips in an uppercut to Mary’s chin. Mary stumbles back her proud legs now trembling and Yvonne adds matching right/lefts to the jaw. AND MEW GOES DOWN! Mary crumbling to her hands and knees. Yvonne departs for the neutral corner and watches as Mary struggles and struggles—THEN MAKES IT TO HER FEET BREAKING THE COUNT AT “NINE!” Then the referee decides to resume the fight. Yvonne looks angry at this and stomps her foot, but then comes in,

Mary lunges at Yvonne and smacks her hard in the mouth! Yvonne reacts with a right/left to the jaw and then a hook to the belly. Mary tumbling away. She seems the ropes and tries to swerve away from them. Yvonne pounces on her swinging away, trying to get Mary down, but she

won’t go down! Yvonne can’t stop punching and STILL Mary won’t go down. THE REF STOPS THE FIGHT! At long last, the official jumps in and carries Mary away. Mary can be heard moaning.

“NOOOOOOO!!! NOOOOOOO!!!”

THE FIGHT IS OVER YVONNE STRAHOVSKI HAS SCORED A TKO8 OVER MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD WITH TKO8. (Yvonne and Mary now tied at 9 wins a apiece over their careers).

After: Yvonne startles the referee (and everyone else) by taking Mary in her arms and carrying her back to her corner.

“You take good care of her. You can tell her I’ll have the French Maid costume ready when she is and I may even learn to like tea if she serves it,” Yvonne says.

Mary opens her swollen right eye: “You just had to make a grand gesture by carrying me.”

“Hey, I wouldn’t do it for anyone else. You darn fool, you might have gotten hurt out there. You should have stayed down and get me next time.” Yvonne told her.

“You better believe there will be a next time there is no way I am going to tolerate being tie with you again!” Mary managed, though it was with an exhausted smile.

“Me either,” Yvonne agreed and leaned down to touch foreheads with her arch-frenemy. Then she walked back to her corner waving in acknowledge of the many fans who were cheering her hard won victory.

It was another classic slugfest in this long running series. Yvonne Strahovski demonstrated that the calendar may say she is 40, she is still tough enough to beat the legendarily tough Mary Winstead. Not staying down in the 8th would have been the sensible thing for MEW to do, but no one familiar with her would doubt she would not try to stay in and somehow win it. One can only hope that she will be able to bounce back from this once again. Meanwhile, a very exciting win for Yvonne Strahovski. The FCBA Lightweight Division may have thought she was headed for Cougar Status, but this hard won victory suggests otherwise.
