Kelsey Merritt versus Sandra Kubicka
(Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)
BEFORE:
Tasty poster fight between models pushing toward the top shelf in the lightweight division. Sandra's won ten of fourteen over the last two years against solid competition, and Kelsey hasn't lost to anyone not named "Swift" or "DiDonato" since before Hallowe'en of 2021. The two girls are clearly looking to use one another as a springboard in the rankings, and both are oozing confidence.
"I'm just entering my prime," says the Polish blonde. "And, I'm almost to the top of the mountain. Kelsey's the next girl I'm going to step over to get there."
"Sandra's a challenge," admits the brunette, "But, I've risen to bigger challenges."
ROUND ONE:
Sandra aggressive early. She likes to slug, bring that power to bear, and, with just a hair of reach on Kelsey, she's hoping to bomb from ranged. Merritt, however, has other ideas, and those involve some slick boxing. The brunette's moving the feet early, forcing Kubicka's hand. Rather than set up the gun platform, the Polish stunner has to turn with, and that allows Kelsey to dictate angles. Quickly, Merritt begins getting the better of things. She's putting punches together, tossing the blonde to the defensive here and there. Sandra a little frustrated. She's landing in spots, but it's mostly one-punch stuff and not nearly enough to offset the work her rival is doing. By the time the bell rings, Merritt's built herself a nice advantage, taking the first wide and pulling into the 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
More of the same as a frustrated Sandra can't bring her power to bear. And, the more frustrated the Polish beauty gets, the harder she stomps the gas pedal. All of which plays right into the brunette's hands. Kelsey's moving and groving. She's not dancing or even using the jab and circle, she's just moving the feet, not allowing Sandra to set and begin firing from the gunnery platform. Instead, all Kubicka does is RESET, over and over again, all while the brunette lands in combination, working the jab from range and following on with right hands. Sandra's never hurt, but she's definitely being touched up as Kelsey gets her box on very, very effectively for the second round in a row. At the bell, the result is the same as in the first, Merritt, wide, and Kelsey leads 20-18.
ROUND THREE:
Sandra hearing it in the corner. She needs to move the feet. So, she does. Rather than stay at gunnery range, she begins coming forward behind the left jab, accomplishing two things. First, she's able to cut the ring some and reduce Kelsey's movement, and, second, she's able to change the geometry and get to spots where she can get off offensively. But, if Kubicka's finally got something going, it's not all Sandra's stuff. Merritt's still having success putting punches together at range. Result is the first two-way round of the bout, with both women scoring and things in doubt until the final half minute. It's there that Kubicka lands a couple of hard right hands that force Kelsey to back and cover, allowing Sandra to finish with a flurry of combinations and grab the points narrowly to cut the brunette's lead to 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Kubicka getting it rolling. She's feeling comfortable now, throwing punches in bunches, putting Kelsey on the back foot and keeping her there despite Merritt's best efforts. The brunette's, all of a sudden, spending way too much time backing and covering. She's not getting the space or the geometry she wants, and she can't do much about it, because she's having to use her resources to deal with all the incoming leather. At mid-round, Kelsey's on the ropes and taking. She's not hurt, but Sandra's overwhelming her defenses and it seems like just a matter of time until Kubicka lands a direct hit. Kelsey ties up, forces a break, gets back to open canvas, but Sandra's pressure campaign continues until the bell. When it rings, Kubicka's taken the points wide and we're even at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Matter of time. BOOM! In the first twenty seconds of the round, that big punch we've been waiting for lands and DOWN GOES KELSEY! Merritt dropped to her back by a SCINTILLATING right from the Polish blonde. Kubicka to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Brunette sits up at six, gets to her feet at eight, takes the mandatory. And, ON COMES SANDRA! She's ripping punches with both hands, determined to get the brunette out of there. Kelsey backing, covering...BOOM! Right hand COUNTER MERRITT AND DOWN GOES SANDRA! Kubicka crashes to the canvas, bounces once, and settles in arms and legs flung out after a PERFECTLY placed right! Merritt slowly to a neutral corner, mind still muzzy. Ref counting down on the blonde. No movement at all. Kelsey's found the 'off' button and MASHED it flat. It's OVER! Kubicka is down and out and it's OVER! And your winner by KO5 in lightning strike fashion is Kelsey Merritt!
AFTER:
Kelsey still a bit buzzed in the post-fight, and definitely looking like she's BEEN in a fight, all puffed up. But, she's able to smile at what's she's pulled off, a pretty rare feat in the FCBA, rallying back from a knockdown to earn a KO in the same round. "It's like I said," the breathless brunette says, "I've handled bigger challenges. I've been knocked down. And, you just saw what happens when THAT happens. I'm here, ladies, and I'm here for your championships." |
