Natalie Portman versus Chloe Grace Moretz
(Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)
BEFORE:
To say there are some similarities in the career trajectories of these two flyweights would be putting it mildly. Portman, famously, struggled mightily early in her career, and was, in fact, 4-6 after her first four years in the FCBA. In year five, at the age of 22, however, the Pax Portmanica came together. Natalie won not one but TWO Unified Flyweight Championships that year and never looked back, putting together a career that, to date, has included 98 wins, ELEVEN lineal titles, and bust in the FCBA Hall of Fame. Chloe? Struggled mightily her first four years in the FCBA, ending up with a combined record of 9-12. Then, in year five, at age 23, it all came together. She's 17-8 since and, while she hasn't won a title, she earned a shot against Dove Cameron. The remaining question isn't if Moretz will match the career of Portman, because almost no one has, it's of Chloe will do what Natalie did and become a top-shelf fighter, a multiple-time champion, and a long-term presence in the title picture. And, the blonde is confident she'll do just that.
"My time is now," says Moretz. "I've gotten my experience, paid my dues, and am in my prime. The CGM Era is just beginning."
"She's a talented fighter," Natalie admits with a shrug. "But, she's nothing special. As I'm about to prove."
ROUND ONE:
Yep. Her time is now. Moretz taking the fight to the brunette early. She's quicker than Nat, and she's using that in a major way. She's working the feet, doubling up on the jab, following on with hard right hands. It's all about fast fighting for the blonde. She's getting off, moving, getting off again, all before the brunette can get anything going. Portman can't get the lay of the land, because she's constantly got a glove in her face. The Hall of Famer is able to land some shot at odd times, but it's all one-punch stuff. It's the blonde who's getting punches put together, taking control of the round from the opening seconds and keeping it firmly right up until the final bell. When it rings, there's absolutely no doubt about the points. They're going to Moretz and very, very wide.
ROUND TWO:
This IS, however, Natalie Freakin' PORTMAN in there. You aren't going to be able to just KEEP doing that same stuff. And, Mortez KNOWS that, but, after that first round, well. You don't fix what isn't broken. Until Natalie breaks it. Portman gets the hands up and keeps them there. She's picking off Chloe's jabs, slipping the rejoinders, firing back in counter, landing good, solid stuff. Moretz is scoring some, there's too much volume for Nat to intercept it all, but the counter-punching offsets the blonde's offense and more. As the round goes on, Nat gains the advantage, slowly building herself a lead on the cards as Chloe continues to try to recreate what she did in the first. At the bell, it's close, but it's Portman who's claimed the points, tied things up at 19, and sent CGM back to the corner with a look of frustration on her face.
ROUND THREE:
Things settle down to boxing now. Mortez backing down on the aggression, which Nat used against her in the previous frame. Instead, it's tactical stuff from both blonde and brunette, resulting in a good, two-way round in which Chloe proves she can DO this against a girl in Portman, who is a MASTER of this. It's all feints and counters, slips and rejoinders, jabs and follow ons. It's distance, angles, geometry, and both women are passing those tests at doctorate levels. There's not much at all in it in this round, as the work of the blonde is perfectly offset by that of the brunette, In fact, heading into the final thirty seconds, an even round looks in the offing. It's not, though, because Chloe lands a sneaky short right hand that WOBBLES NATALIE with five seconds to go! Moretz lands a couple of hard follows, but that's all she can manage as the bell sounds. The blonde has to be content with narrowly claiming the points to lead 29-28, but the question is, can Natalie shake the damage before round four begins?
ROUND FOUR:
No, no, she cannot. It's clear Natalie is still buzzed as the fourth gets underway, and the blonde takes full advantage, stepping to the brunette and backing her up with a series of hard shots to the head. Portman tries to manage, jabbing back here and there, but CGM is looking plenty dominant, battering the older woman around the ring and looking to take her out of there. Portman's able to prevent that, but she can't prevent a very thorough cleanup that continues right into the final minute. By then, Natalie's gotten the legs mostly back under her, and she's able to counter effectively, but it's much too little, much too late for the brunette to climb back into the round. When the bell rings, Moretz has taken the points wide and extended her lead to 39-37.
ROUND FIVE:
Moretz pushing pace. She's obviously taken something out of Nat these past couple of rounds, and the plan is to build on that. She's stepping to, fighting soundly but aggressively, looking for every opportunity to land hard leather. Portman willing to give ground here and there, fighting in counter, holding her own despite allowing her opponent to fight lea...BOOM! Right hand counter, NATALIE and Chloe is HURT! Moretz wobbled, then driven backward by a flurry of heavy leather from the brunette and DOWN. SHE. GOES! Chloe dropped to her back by the sheer volume of fire. Natalie to a neutral corner. Moretz rolls to hands and knees at six, gets to her feet and seven and STUMBLES BACK TO THE CANVAS! She tries to push back to all fours, but it's too late! The count passes her by and it's OVER! And your winner by KO5 is Natalie Portman!
AFTER:
Moretz inconsolable on her stool. She HAD her. She HAD her. And she let her off the hook. At least, that's how the tearful blonde sees it. As for Natalie, she's FAR more ho-hum. She's seen young, talented blondes challenge the Pax Portmanica over and over again, and seen so, so many of them end up the way Chloe did. "As I said," Natalie says calmly, "A talented fighter. But. Nothing special. Nothing special at ALL." |
