Karlie Kloss vs. Kennedy McMann
(Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)
BEFORE:
Welterweight bout sees the uber-rangy and dangerous Kloss battle redhead Kennedy, unable to push past Taylor Hill and Kara Del Toro in the Front Street lightweight division, has been working on making her mark at welter. But, while McMann has had some success above 130, including a big win over former champ Cassidy Freeman, she's still far from a proven quantity at Big Girl, especially considering her stable's complete lack of success at the weight. As for Karlie, she's always one big right hand from victory and, in this division, a few of those in a row from getting into the title picture. And, Ms. Kloss plans to start along the road to another shot at gold tonight. "She's nothing special," Karlie says. "Not at this weight. I've been in with LOTS of girls better than her and BEATEN lots of girls better than her. I'll take her out of there. No question about it."
"This is a big one for me," Kennedy admits. "I'm trying to make a push up here, and I need to keep getting results. And, I WILL get one tonight."
ROUND ONE:
One of the biggest problems Kloss poses, and she poses many, is her length. Girls just aren't used to having to deal with the kind of reach Karlie has, especially girls who fight at light as often as they do at welter. But, Kennedy's clearly been well trained for this one, because, when the brunette starts to make with the long jab, the redhead angles, moves the feet, gets to spots, and gets off. McMann working middle distances while Kloss shows movement of her own in service of getting to gunnery range where she can extend on her punches. It's a bit of a game of cat and mouse in the first, with both women having their moments. But, when the bell rings, it's Kennedy who's gotten more done. She takes the points narrowly and moves into the 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
BOOM! Boom? BOOM! Right off the bell KLOSS LANDS A RIGHT HAND and KENNEDY IS HURT! McMann doing VERY well to stay on her feet after Karlie dents her chin with the cross. But, Kloss all about remedying THAT situation, pushing all her chips into the middle of the table as she swings away at the redhead, driving her back into the ropes. Kennedy in the tight earmuff and Karlie goes BODY in a big way, banging away to ribs and midsection, before going upstairs and then right back down. McMann holding on, covering up, rolling with. She's playing for time and playing it well. Denying Kloss the finish, and, by the final thirty seconds, shaking off the worst of the damage and beginning to fire back. Redhead makes her way off the ropes and lands a few good shots, but, at the bell, it's Karlie who's taken the points wide to even things at 19.
ROUND THREE:
Back on the same terms we saw in the first. Kloss all about extending, keeping Kennedy out on the end of her punches, and, when the brunette is able to do that, by landing the jab, she's getting much the better of things. But, the redhead is all about moving the feet, angling, slipping inside that left and stepping to middle distances where she can get off in combination. And, when McMann does that, SHE gets much the better of things. Result is going to come down to who gets more of what she wants, and that's why both fighters work so hard to enforce the terms they need to be successful. In the end, neither really succeeds in doing enough to build up any sort of lead, but, at the bell, it's Kennedy who's taken the points narrowly and pulled back into a one-point lead, this time at 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Adjustment by Kloss. Karlie's using a drop step now. She's giving a little ground to give herself more time to get the jab on and keep Kennedy at range. The modification causes McMann some issues early, as Kennedy's not able to get past Karlie's defenses and get to spots, but, eventually, she solves the puzzle and we're right back on the same terms we've seen in three of the four rounds, with the taller brunette scoring when they're at range and the redhead getting plenty of work done at middle distances. For the third round in four, no one's hurt, and, for the third round in four, there's not a lot in it, as both fighters are getting some work done, but neither is able to get any sort of control for long. At the bell, it's a near thing again, but it's Karlie who takes the points, evening things at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Karlie working at range again to start the fifth. She's trying not just to keep Kennedy at punching distance but to line her up for another of those big right hands like the one she landed in the second. McMann working hard, moving and slipping, working to middle distances, getting off. Kloss immediately giving some ground to get back to range, back to working the jab, but the redhead's got the angles down. She's breaking past those defenses, landing hard shot and DROPPING KARLIE WITH A STRAIGHT RIGHT HAND! A SCINTILLATING right hand from Kennedy and Kloss is blown to her back! McMann quickly to a neutral corner. Kloss staring up at the referee, rolls to her belly at six, pushes to hands and knees at eight...and SINKS BACK TO THE CANVAS! It's OVER! It's OVER! And your winner by KO5 is Kennedy McMann!
AFTER:
No, it's not the huge breakthrough win Front Street has seemingly been seeking at welter forever, but it's a solid victory for Kennedy, and there's no doubt she's pleased with her efforts and the result. "I knew I'd get her," the redhead says with a smile. "It was just a matter of fighting smart and countering all that length she has. She caught me one good one, but I took it, shook it, and came right back at her. I can compete with the best up here, and I'm going to keep proving it." |
