Lorella Boccia vs Ivona Dadic
(Words: EPIC / Results: Lookout!)
I’d never really understood the need for bloody press conferences before a game, but here I was, talking to a reporter in the ring. He asked me if I was scared of her, me only having three fights and all, but she’s Italian. In the last millennium the Italians have not won a single war. Martial stuff isn’t their forte, and athletes are built differently. We weren’t the chaff she’s been facing. Glamor models and singers simply didn’t have the build or constitution for endurance.
Mayhaps that was why she came to the ring with her stablemate, the German one, as her second. Italy had always played second fiddle to the Germans. They came, and the reporter asked them the same questions. I tuned them out.
Round one began and I dove into it. She was good, I had to give her that. She cracked me across the face more times than I could count, and I could not get a shot in edgewise. But I was right about her build - I wasn’t the one huffing and puffing her way through round one, and by virtue of that I was able to snag a “wide loss” instead of being shut out completely.
She was good, but not legendarily great. She was tiring faster than I was, and in round two I pushed her back and gave her a few hits to the face. With a three-inch height advantage, I could not reach low and hit her soft stomach, but the face was enough. It made her struggle, and it seemed that I could win this. Despite this I was never able to push her to the ropes like I wanted. Round three was much the same, with her holding me off and trying not to tire herself out; and there was me, throwing punch after punch into a stonewall guard. A hook to the head rattled her brain in its nest, and for a moment she wobbled, but it was gone in a flash, too quickly for me to be able to capitalize.
Frankly, I just hadn’t thought that far.
But its effects were lasting. All through the rest of the round she was unsteady on her feet, and it took her more than a moment to realize that round three had ended after the bell. Round four saw her stumble forward, almost like she was drunk, and I lunged forward, eager to finish this before anything untoward could occur.
My punch hit nothing.
Suddenly she was under me, my arm stretched out over her head; she was in a crouch, low and coiled with potential energy. Then like a loose garage spring she rose, slamming stars of extinction into my vision.
And the next thing I knew was seeing the five white lights above the ring, and they hurt my eyes as staring into the sun did. My body felt warm, and every pulse thundered in my ears, bringing heat to my face. So sleepy…
