Peyton Roi List versus Caylee Cowan

(Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)

BEFORE:

You could argue, persuasively, that Natalie Alyn Lind plays an outsized role in the careers of both of these blonde bantams. For List, Lind marked a career low point...twice. The first came in 2018, when, after having lost management for the second time, Peyton was blasted out by Nat The Brat in five for her fourth straight loss. List would fight ONCE more in the next TWO years before being claimed off the scrap heap by Front Street and revitalizing her career. List, however, failed twice to win the big one for the Philly stable and was cut loose, only to find Lind across the ring from her in her first post-Front Street fight. She was blasted out in five again. From there, however, things got better. Peyton was signed by HISC and got back on the winning track.

As for Caylee, she burst onto the scene as a member of Left Turn Knockouts in late 2020, with a pair of impressive wins, the second a shocker over Samara Weaving. Her third bout was a six-round JMD victory over...Natalie Alyn Lind. Cowan, it appeared, was for real. Since then, however, Caylee's fought ten times and won...ONCE, leading to speculation that she's hanging on to her spot in her second stable, Global Boxing Syndicate, by her fingernails.

So, yeah, despite the fact that neither of these fighters is in the title picture, there's plenty on the line here. Can List keep the momentum going? Can Cowan BUILD some momentum? We're about to find out.

ROUND ONE:

Cowan, as always, aggressive, and Peyton's not going to play that. List has good length for this division and likes to use it, likes to work at range, get her box on, and that's exactly what she does in the opening stanza. Caylee a little too aggressive at times. She needs to be angling, working the feet, trying to get past the slightly (they are less than a month apart) younger woman's defenses. Instead, she's boring forward, and, while she's managing to get inside and bang at times, Peyton's making her pay the price for doing so, landing punches in bunches as Cowan tries to get to her spots. At the bell, there's no doubt about the points. It's List wide and with the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Cowan settles down and settles in. NOW she's working the feet, playing the angles, closing to middle distances at times and working into the phone booth at others. List, however, continues to stay busy with that left jab, move the feet, score well when she can get the distance she wants. Result of all this is a good, two-way round in which both fighters get some, but not all of what they want. There's never very much in it, as no one can grab control of the proceedings. Final seconds see Cowan in Peyton's grill, working head and body, backing up List to the bell. That late rally is enough to secure the round for Caylee and even things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

More of the same. Fight has settled into a pattern now, with List giving a little ground here and there, moving the feet, working the left, doing everything she can to create distance while Caylee angles, looks to get past that jab and bring her power to bear. For the second round in a row, both fighters have some success, but neither is able to do enough to gain control of the round or create any separation for the judges. Once again, there's absolutely nothing in it going into the final seconds, and a late rally tells the tale. This time, it's List who manages it, putting together a series of quick flurries that toss Cowan to the defensive. The narrow victory puts Peyton back in the lead 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Caylee solving the puzzle now. All of a sudden, she's finding her way inside on a consistent basis. Almost from the beginning of the round, she's in List's grill, backing her up with hard shot to the head, working a little body, but concentrating upstairs. Peyton looking spooked by all that power. She's staying on the defensive, keeping the hands high, looking unwilling to get off in counter. Cowan notices and turns up the heat. By the final minute, she's bullying the younger blonde around the ring, working her over to head and body, putting together the kind of performance that led folks to believe she was a star in the making a few years ago. At the bell, there's zero doubt. It's Caylee and wide to even things at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

List hanging in there now after hearing it in the corner between rounds. This isn't the game she wants to play, and she's working to get space with that jab, but she's not going all "back and cover" every time Cowan makes with the heavy leather. Instead, she's banging back, holding her own and ROCKING CAYLEE WITH A RIGHT HOOK! List catches the older blonde a GOOD one and Cowan is ALL WOBBLY BUTT! Now it's Peyton over to the offensive, letting the hands go, ROCKING Cowan with a left hook and DROPPING HER WITH A STRAIGHT RIGHT HAND! List quickly to a neutral corner. Cowan down on her right side, pushes to elbow and haunch at six...then SLUMPS BACK TO THE CANVAS! IT'S OVER! And your winner by KO5 is Peyton List!

AFTER:

List's career may not have NINE lives, but, at just 25 years old, it MAY just have FOUR. "She can bang," Peyton admits in the post-fight. "But, I know how to deal with that. I've learned a lot over the past few years, and I'm still learning, still getting better. I'm the number three bantam here. And, that's OK. But, soon enough, I'll be moving up that pecking order. Just wait and see."
