Yvonne: 42 YO, 5-8 (1.73 m) 84-44-0. 70 KO since 2008, Lookout! Boxing

Before: “Here we are again.” Mary Winstead says excitedly in the pre-fight press event. “It’s hard to believe we haven’t had a Santa-Kini fight since 2013—which, of course, I won.”

Yvonne Strahovski rolled her eyes, “And I wo the first one the year before. So we are 1-1 and, in fact, we are 9-9 in our lifetime series. S there is a lot on the line here.”

“I am pleased to know you are keeping track. Yes, we are all tied up and I am looking forward to being in front once again,” Mary said.

“In your dreams, Winstead, I am ready to take you down, be prepared to lose!”

:”Oh, you do say the sweetest things, Vonnie. I can’t wait to see you crumpled at my feet wondering what happened. You always look so cute when you’ve been knocked out by me.”

“Not half was cute as you look when I put you on the canvas and the ref is reaching 10,” Yvonne replied. “I think losing to me is exciting to you.”

“I can tell you’re getting excited now. I think we better get to the ring. I want to show off my Santa-Kini,”Mary said, she was keeping her robe tghtly belted to conceal her ring attire.

“Oh, you really want to see mine,” Yvonne said, her robe equally concealing.

The crowd was soon eagerly greeting them in the ring. Mary and Yvonne removed their robes to the cheers of the fans. Mary was in a red satin bikini trimmed in white faux fur with white boots and gloves (red laces). Her bobbed brunette hair was loose, but wetted down. Yvonne was in a blue satin bikini with silver faux trim and blue boots and gloves with silver laces. Her blonde hair was pulled back in a battle. They look each other over and seemed pleased with the results. Then the referee stepped forward and went over the instructions. These were then followed by the customary glove tap. The fighters went to their corners. Then the bell rang.

R1: Mary and Yvonne quick out of their corners. Mary striking first with quick jabs to the head and then sudden hooks to the body. Yvonne returns fire as she bangs away at Mary to the jaw and then goes after her to the ribs. Plenty of in close action as the two circle around each other. Then Mary goes after Yvonne hard to the chin with successive uppercuts. Yvonne knocked back on her heels. She recovers enough to throw up a barrage of jabs that keep Mary from an effective follow-up. Mary now ducking down, trying to get at Yvonne to the chin again and finally manages to shake Yvonne up again just as the round ends. It was a close round but MEW is given the round by the judges.

R2: Yvonne faster out of her corner and promptly lands a heavy right hand to Mary’s jaw. Mary suddenly wobbling, struggling to get her mitts up defensively. Yvonne happy to take advantage with more shots of MEW’s jaw and then her chin. Mary now has her gloves up and her head is now much better protected. This cues a furious Yvonne attack on Mary to the body. Mary worked over from the breasts to the belly and back again. Mary struggling to get some jabs out to at least slow Yvonne down, but she is soon bent double. Yvonne finishing up with shots off the top of Mary’s head. Yvonne wins this round easily.

R3: Mary and Yvonne dueling at midring. Both fighters bobbing and weaving whilepunching away steadily. Mary now adding a attack on Yvonne’s right side ribs with a drumfire of slamming rights and lefts. Yvonne feels the pressure and tries to shift her body around to protect her increasingly bruised flank. Mary keeping up the pressure, but then Yvonne able to land a couple of hard socks to the jaw. Mary shuddering, knocked to one side, but turns back and scores with a solid right uppercut to Yvonne’s chin. Mary then takes hooks to the belly as Yvonne fights back, but Mary answers with a right/left combo to the chin. Round ends. It is close on the judges’ cards but Mary comes away with the win.

R4: Yvonne out fast this round and catches Mary early with fast jabs to the face that leave Mary reeling back. Then Yvonne goes after MEW to the chin and jaw with strong combinations that send tremors through Mary’s body. Mary obliged to protect her head so now Yvonne is working over MEW’s midsection. Yvonne adds Mary’s right side ribs to her target list. Mary is trying to get away from the punch barrage that seems to be hitting her relentless from all directions. Mary finally striking back late with some fast jabs that muss up Yvonne’s face, but Yvonne clips Mary hard on the chin and this causes Mary to use her goves for protection as the round ends. Round IS easy win for Yvonne S

R5: Mary comes charging out fast as the new round begins, but Yvonne move even quicker. As MEW lunges forward she gets a straight right hand between the eyes! Mary brought to a screeching halt and Yvonne is quick to follow up. The stunned Mary is caught to the chin by crunching uppercuts and then her head gets swiveled by right/left shots to the jaw. Mary backs away in haste and trying to protect her head. Yvonne ow driving big, thick hooks into the Winstead abs and Mary is bent forward. Yvonne keeps up the body battering until she driven the hunched up Mary into the ropes. Mary manages to take a seat on the ropes and brace herself as Yvonne pounds away at her to the body. Mary managing to keep her head protected but she is writhing under the slashing leather storm engulfing her body. Mary gurgling ad gasping under the impacts, but her legs don’t falter and she makes it to the bell. However Yvonne has scored a shutout and left Mary a sweaty, throbbing mess.

R6: Foxfire corner crew has their work cut out for them, but they swarm around Mary as she sits slumped on her stool. Bell sounds and Mary pitches herself forward off her stool. She moving slowly and looks defensive. Yvonne comes swooping in and goes for the side of Mary’s head, but Mary shows surprising mobility in ducking the shot. Then Mary shoots up and scores against Yvonne’s chin. Yvonne not expecting this and goes stumbling back. Mary seems to find her power again and goes after Yvonne to the jaw. Yvonne gets her head knocked around, but then she seems to regain her composure. Yvonne able to duck and dodge most of Mary’s incoming while using her jab to harass Mary’s efforts to close on her. Mary now trying to circle around, but Yvonne counterattacks. Fast flurry of punches head and body suddenly crash into Mary and drive her back. Mary fighting back to the body. Yvonne pounded in the belly and then gets belted to the ja. Yvonne now stumbling away. Gloves at her head as Mary slides with her, going after those right side ribs. Yvonne suddenly whirls around and lands a big right hand to the side of Mary’s head. Mary shuddering momentarily, but catches Yvonne to the chin just as bell rings. Intense, hard-fought round goes to Mary Winstead by a narrow margin.

R7: Both corners working hard between the rounds. Yvonne and Mary both out slowly, but they move towards each other with determination. Brisk punching from both as they press forward. Punches mainly going to the body and soon they are at point-blank range jerking rights and ups into rib cage, abs and breasts. Then Yvonne unexpectedly moves back and catches Mary off balance. Mary lurching forward, her chin is suddenly wide open and BOOM! Big Vonnie S. uppercut comes crashing home. Mary reeling , gloves hovering at her chest and BOOM! BOOM! Right/left uppercut smash home AND MEW CRASHES OTO HER BACK! Yvonne looks down at the fallen Mary with interest and then trots to the neutral corner. Referee moves in as Mary is pushing herself up on her right arm. She looks around woozily and then looks up at the official standing over. The sight of the referee counting her out seems to clear away much of the fog in Mary’s brain. She starts struggling to rise and manages to do just as the referee has reached “NINE!” Fight soon resumes, but Mary takes the conservative approach and just buries he face in her gloves. Yvonne is left working Mary to the flanks to the bell. The knockdown assured Yvonne Strahovski as easy win on the judges’ cards.

R8: Mary gets plenty of attention from the Foxfire corner crew and she looks unexpectedly determined sitting there. Bell sounds. Yvonne has been fighting Mary long enough to know her reputation for coming back from adversity. She approaches Mary warily. Mary looks defensive, but then seeing Yvonne’s caution she suddenly seizes the initiative. A Mary goes first the belly with a blistering attack on Yvonne’s ribcage. Yvonne instinctively turns away and exposes her right side. Mary firing a drumbeat series of punches into those side ribs and Yvonne turns to protect them. Mary then waiting with right/left. right/left, right/left three successive combinations that spin Yvonne’s head one way and then the other. Then Mary unleashes her finishing uppercuts to the chin. Yvonne’s head snaps back, her legs suddenly become entangled AND DOWN GOES VONNIE! Yvonne sprawled on her face in a softly moaning heap. Mary takes quick glimpse at the sight and then hustles t the neutral corner. Referee on the scene and counting. Yvonne is struggling to rise. She crawls towards the nearby ropes and tries to use them to climb to her feet. Referee is counting as the audience (and Mary Elizabeth Winstead) watch breathlessly to see if Yvonne can make it up. Yvonne grasps the top rope and appears to need only one good pull to get herself up---BUT NO! Yvonne grip on the ropes gives way she slides down to end up in a heap.

“EIGHT!....NINE!...TEN!...OUT!!!!” the referee calls.

After: As soon as she is proclaimed the official winner of the bout, Mary hastens to check on the fallen Yvonne. Yvonne is helped to the Lookout corner and is checked out. Mary hovers nearby until Yvonne is pronounced OK. Then she sweeps Yvonne up off the stool and gives her a big hug.

“You were great out there tonight, Vonnie. I thought you might have had me in the 7th, but once my head stopped ringing I knew I was still in the fight.”

“I can never be sure with you, Winnie, sometimes you really are finished, too often you come back and win it,” sighed Yvonne.

“I never know either, I just keep trying to stay in a fight, sometimes I can and sometimes I can’t. This time I could, but I just love the way you push me, Vonnie,” Mary said.

“I would love it more when I win the fight away,” Yvonne said. “You going to walk me tonight?”

“Since you are in reasonably good shape, of course I will, our fans expect. Just look sad for the cameras because you lost and I won. It will make for more dramatic pictures.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” Yvonne said tartly as Mary helped her up from the stool, put a steadying arm around her and they were off. The fans were delighted and, in truth both fighters were smiling by the time the Walk was done. A final hug and the FCBA’s best known frenemies wen their separate ways.

Another rousing battle between one of the FCBA’s most legendary rivalries. This time Mary Winstead came off the canvas in the 7th to win the fight with a KO of Yvonne Strahovski in the 8th. She goes ahead in their long series 10-9. The growing popularity of “cougar boxing would seem to suggest that this rivalry is far from over. Fans of both fighters hope so too.
