Reason postulated that the advantage should have been hers, being more than a decade younger and matching Lucy in every other metric, but it was not so, and Vivian found the first two rounds to be a rather even affair, trading back and forth with the older model. Pinder's home crowd had evidently thought the same, and cheered ever harder for the fan favorite as she continued to fight her opponent to a standstill.

However, despite their wildness earlier, they held their breath and were silent as the bell for the third round pealed and the fighters rose from their stools. The foreign Vivian looked no worse than their champion and it was still up in the air whether victory would be Britain's that night. It seemed that despite their famed hooliganism at football matches, British fans at sports venues had some wit and sense in them.

Lucy took the initiative as her fans gazed on, tentatively jabbing and alternating between high and low, left and right, testing the waters and keeping her distance. It was not a full-blown attack, but it was trying enough to keep Vivian on her toes and let her settle into autopilot. Dodge, block, counter, dodge, block, counter. She noted this pattern, and realized that she should not settle into a routine like that, yet she could not bring herself to change. If Lucy was content to tire herself jabbing like that, she was welcome to it, for Vivian was getting her counters in, swelling up Lucy's face. The crowd hated it and booed, but it wasn't like they were supporting her very much anyway.

Then, seemingly out of the blue, Lucy ducked under her counter and Vivian overextended wildly, having anticipated résistance but encountering none, and from under her extended arm Lucy rose with an uppercut that had all her weight and power behind it. She'd been planning for this. It slammed into Vivian's chin, jerking her head back so hard it was as though her neck had been snapped. In an arc of spit and blood it went, and the harsh sun burned her eyes as she fell back, seeing but no longer perceiving the world around her.

Vivian hit the sand back-first, sprawled out but not totally unconscious, her breasts nearly bouncing free of her pink bra, but she could not bring herself to care. In some far-flung corner of her mind she was vaguely aware of the referee counting and waving his arms. Her head swam and her body ached, but she saw Lucy smiling in triumph, and that could not stand.

Anything to rise. Anything to rise.

"Three!"

She rolled onto her stomach, putting her fists beneath her despite the pain. Vivian strained, her arms shaking as she pushed herself to all fours. Lucy looked on with a Cheshire grin.

"Five!"

With a vengeful strength she latched onto the middle rope with one hand, it bending as she put her weight upon it, inching up to a standing position, wobbling as she rose. Punch-drunk like that, Vivian was not quite sure of anything at all, but still she rose, knowing that she must.

"Seven"

She wrapped her other fist around the top rope, holding still for a second to steady herself in hopes that the spinning would fade, swaying despite herself, gently rocking in the still air beneath the lights. The audience gazed on in silence.

"Nine!"

She let go of the rope and turned around, facing a shocked Lucy, for she had thought that was it.

"Alright, she's- nope! Ten!"

Vivian fell flat on her face, unable to support herself on two legs only, and the audience erupted into cheers once more, for now they realized that their champion's ultimate had worked after all.

But this Vivian did not hear, for while the ref raised Lucy's hand in victory, she lay on the mat, quietly sleeping the new year away.

She awoke in the Revolution cabana, nursing a head, to hear Lucy her hair still shower-damp, giving an interview at the neighboring This Is Glamour cabana: "To be honest, after I saw the way Vivian struggled to put Hannah Palmer away in April, I always fancied my chances tonight. From the first clinch, I could feel my tits pancake hers and I knew I could take her. It's been a tough year, with 4 losses on the bounce. Next year is about setting the record straight with Beth Lily then making a fresh assault on the JMD title. I'm 40 next year but I still feel I can compete with girls half my age. And of course, the new JMD champion ISN’T half my age…."
