Intro:
We kick off tonight's action with the first bout of this year's Diamond Boxing Tournament. Eight women are going to have to go on a marathon seven month run of fights. up first to the plate are English model Iskra Lawrence and debuting Dutch model Daphne Groenevald. Who will kick off the tournament on the right foot here in Los Angeles KIA Forum?
The build up to the fight saw both women give statements on video of their thoughts. They each got a turn on the hot seat in a room with white walls around them. First up in the room was Iskra Lawrence. Wearing a tanned dress with black heels. Smiling as she sits down to speak.
"This is an important time for me. I had so much momentum when I first came into the FCBA. Hell I already knocked out one of my competition in this tournament! (That being Megan Thee Stallion) so I am confident in myself, even after losing my stable last year." Iskra starts off looking confident as she speaks.
Then she flexes her arms as she says "oh right my first round opponent. If you haven't noticed I have a little more muscle on me. (Winks to the camera) I know she will move around, try to use her height on me. Once I land a big punch I suspect she will be kissing the canvas early. This is a warning fight to the rest of the competition." Walking out the room with a little shake of her booty for the camera with a laugh.
Daphne meanwhile sits in the seat wearing a white dress with blue stripes down the sides to match her heels. She waves to the camera as she looks relaxed heading into her first ever boxing match.
"I have been training for a little while before I got the call to take part in this tournament. Sparring sessions between us models has become the trend I guess for managers to find us. Sparring my fellow Dutch models has gotten me this spot. Time I use it to show I am not just a pretty face" says Daphne. Winking to the camera as she frames her face with her hands.
After that she gets a little more serious. Admitting "I do know that the odds are against me. Starting with Iskra is a feat in itself. I know she has great power but I will use my speed. Use my skills and box her around. The knockout will present itself and I will take it. Don't worry about that. Same goes for the rest of the field. You may not know me well, I promise by the end of this tournament you will."
Fighting time, first through the curtain comes Iskra with her coach. She walks to the ring with a small smile but looks serious for the most part. Tapping her red gloves together as she gets to the ring steps. Jogging up them before stepping into the ring. Iskra is wearing a blue sports bra. Blue trunks with red stripes down the sides and matching shoes. Her hair is in a braid as she flexes her arms for her fans.
Now here comes Daphne. Understandably she takes a breath before beginning her walk to the ring. She follows in the footsteps of fellow Dutch celebrity fighters like Dotzen Kroes, Yasmin Verheijen, Marloes Horst and Robin Holzken. Her supporters waving her countries flag in the crowd to add pressure to her debut.
Soon Daphne steps into the ring. Wearing an orange sports bra with black stripes up the sides, matching trunks, shoes and gloves, while her hair is tied into a ponytail. Daphne paces in her corner as her coach tells her she has got this. Daphne has an ice cold stare aimed at Iskra when she looks her way.
Soon enough the referee waves the fighters to the center of the ring. Both have piercing gazes aimed at each other. Daphne shaking her arms and legs to keep them loose. Iskra has hands on her hips. When they are told to touch gloves. Iskra bangs hers down on top of Daphne's. Trying clearly to get into her head as both return to their corners. The bell rings to start 10 rounds of welterweight action.
Round 1:
Out they go with Daphne understandably wanting to keep the action at range. Iskra looking to close the distance on her as they trade jabs. Daphne starts to land two punch combos at the twenty second mark. Up on her toes looking to have good form. Maybe been secretly training with her Dutch counterparts that have been in celebrity boxing.
But Iskra shows the strength and surprising hand speed she has to overcome. A jab followed by a right hook catches Daphne on her cheek. She is pressed against the ropes. Where the English fighter starts to whack away at the tummy of her foe. Looking to take some spring out her step before she is held by Groeneveld.
The referee splits them up with Daphne doubling up her jab as they resume. Sticking and moving more to try to make Iskra respect her. Iskra again though shows her power in the latter part of the round. Driving Daphne to the ropes after a flush straight to her face. Pounding to the side of her head with hooks in the final seconds. At the bell both can be happy with the moments they had on top.
Round 2:
Iskra looks to be more aggressive. Getting clipped around her cheeks early on as Daphne moves side to side to try to keep her opponent off her game. A left hook catches Daphne as she moves that way. Straight snapping her head back as she is driven back to the ropes. Iskra pinning her there with her head down and thudding shots to the body that make Daphne grunt out.
Holding onto Iskra. Daphne looks happy to be free when the referee pushes them apart. Using her jab to smack her foe in her face. Iskra tightening her guard up to protect her face. Showing more respect to her rookie rival as she hasn't been able to simply bulldoze her as she clearly expected.
But with less then fifty seconds to go Iskra lands a straight to the chest of Daphne. A follow up left/right hook combo follows to smack the cheeks of her opponent. Daphne covering up now as she finds herself muscled into a neutral corner. Iskra throwing in hooks and short straight punches as she looks to maul Groeneveld into submission. The round comes to an end with Daphne getting to see why Iskra is seen as a dark horse to win it all.
Round 3:
That last round doesn't look to have deterred Daphne as she pushes out her corner to engage. Doubling up her jab. Aiming it at times around the chest and abs of Iskra while swinging in more hooks off the back foot. She is outworking her fellow blonde as Iskra has to keep her left up to protect against the sweeping hooks.
Daphne again soon finds herself needing to fight off the ropes. Maybe showing some nativity with her ring positioning. Letting Iskra cut the ring off and pound her back to the ropes. Daphne clinching up, throwing in kidney shots as she shows everyone she will do what she needs to win. Iskra not too pleased when they are broken up, scowling at Daphne for the illegal punches that earn the Dutch stunner a warning by the referee.
Resuming with just over a minute to go. Daphne is showing good poise to circle to the left of Iskra. Throwing a solid jab and looking for openings to strike around. Iskra starts to land a sweeping left hook late in the round. One turning the head of Groeneveld before she is bullied back to the ropes for the final twenty seconds of the round. At the bell Iskra gives Daphne a shove to her chest to intimidate her or maybe out of frustration. Daphne waves her to bring it on as she shows no fear of the powerful fighter.
Round 4:
Again it's Daphne out the gates faster with her reach advantage and good footwork. She is marking up the cheeks of Iskra. Still getting clipped though as Iskra throws hooks when she gets in closer range. Both barking with effort when they exchange.
A feint with her left allows Iskra to catch Daphne with an overhand right to her jaw. Daphne then finds herself driven into a neutral corner. Uppercuts now flying in from Iskra as she is looking to really pound Daphne's lights out. The first look of worry from Daphne as her head gets snapped back twice before she can grab onto her foe in a tight clinch.
Even broken up Daphne has tensed up a little. With Iskra stalking after her firing in two punch combos. A left hook crashes flush on the cheek of Daphne. Who then takes a straight onto her chin. Pinning the shelled up Groeneveld onto the ropes. Lawrence is trying to break open her guard. The round soon ends with Iskra looking to have gone up a gear. Daphne spitting some blood into her bucket from a cut on the inside of her cheek as there is some puffiness around it.
Round 5:
Pushing off their stools Daphne is starting to look a little worn after that last round. A jab lands square into her chin to knock her head back as Iskra is in hunt and destroy mode by the looks of it. With Daphne landing a tense looking jab now.
A left hook turns her head as Daphne is rushed into the ropes. She looks to clinch up but instead takes a hard right into her belly button that makes her gasp out. ANOTHER LEFT HOOK AROUND HER EAR SENDS DAPHNE DOWN TO ALL FOURS AT THE FEET OF ISKRA!
Who raises her arms in the air before walking to the neutral corner. 1...2...3... Daphne shakes her head as she looks at the canvas. 4...5...6.. Rubbing her right ear as she sits on her haunches. 7...8.. Daphne beats the count with her gloves being raised moments later. Nodding she wants to fight on.
Resuming with still two minutes to go. Daphne's legs don't have the same spring to them. Allowing Iskra to slam a straight right into her nose. Daphne cries out as she is driven back to the ropes. Claret flowing from her nose as Iskra starts hammering in hooks. The guard of Daphne isn't doing much to stop this. TOWEL IS THROWING IN FROM GROENEVELD'S CORNER! REFEREE STOPPING THE FIGHT ONCE THEY SEE IT!

That's how you start a tournament off! Iskra getting the important first win as she aims to win it all. She checks on Daphne as she gives her credit for getting back up from being put down. Daphne thanking her as they embrace. Though Daphne needs a little help returning to her corner as her legs are shaky from the pounding she took.
No complaints from Daphne to her coach. Better to live to fight another day then being brutally knocked out. Daphne thanks her coach for saving her. Making them smile as they pat her on the back. Wiping them down and patching them up afterwards as Daphne takes a breath to cool herself down after such a hard debut fight.
Across the ring Iskra and her coach hug. Iskra getting back on the winning side of the equation after a rough few months. She sits and while her cheeks are stinging. She looks happy enough with the win and performance. Her coach has no real complaints either as they tell her "good job."
Soon enough the fighters come to the center of the ring. Iskra getting her left hand raised in the air as the result is announced. Daphne nodding with a rye smile. They share a quick fist bump before Daphne heads out the ring. Heading up the aisle to go to her locker room. She showed nice technical skills but has she the power to match these big hitters like Iskra and later in the tournament Megan Thee Stallion?
The winner meanwhile goes to each corner to blow a kiss to her supporters. Then she flexes her arms for the cameras as she says to her rivals "I am simply getting stronger, faster and more skillful. None of you are beating me." Confidence flowing through her as this is a hell of a close field to choose from. Iskra has started on the right footing at least as she leaves the ring with her coach smiling all the way to the back. |
