Intro: Third bout of tonight sees Jaime Pang hope to do her nation proud, the Singapore fighter steps into the Singapore Indoor Stadium with the hope of beating South Koreans Joo Min-Hee, who will be hoping to remind people why she was one of the best prospects in the FCBA only a few short years ago.
Some pundits on the FCBA Network feel a little sympathy for Jaime, seeing her as a main event level talent on a card like this based in Asia as she was one of the early faces of the Singapore revolution to the FCBA, she has been usurped it seems by the newer stars that came after her like Michelle Tan.
Jaime vents some frustration on social media, posting "Queenie Sia is in the main event? Really? I beat her last time we fought, yet I have been put in the middle of the card, I guess I need to show the world whose really the best in Singapore with my performance huh" not best pleased, not even acknowledging who she is fighting.
Joo meanwhile posted to her account "it seems Jaime Pang has forgotten she is facing me, well hi Jaime, I am from Korea and have been boxing for years, facing the likes of Elizabeth Olsen, Brie Larson and Helen Flanagan to name a few of the international talents I have faced, while you have hidden in Singapore, I'll introduce myself more forcefully when we meet in the ring" having a little fun but showing that she is annoyed by the snub from her opponent.
Fight night, Jaime comes out first to a heroes welcome, she smiles as she looks around with hands on her hips, taking in the sight of the cheering fans, beginning her walk to the ring with her coach on her right side, Jaime climbs into the ring wearing a white sports bra, matching trunks, black gloves with her hair in a ponytail, she gets into the zone by tapping her cheeks.
Joo is out now with her coach beside her, getting boos from the crowd, Joo doesn't let them bother her as the bubbly girl still smiles, walking to the ring wearing a navy blue and white horizontal striped sports bra, blue trunks, matching shoes and gloves, her hair is in a ponytail too, getting inside the ring, Joo fist bumps her coach to show she is ready.
Fighters walk to the middle of the ring, hands on hips as they look each other over, grinning as neither looks too impressed or are using poker faces, the referee orders them to touch gloves, just touching left fists in a quick bump, then return to their corners as they look keen to fight, the bell rings to start 10 rounds of bantamweight action.
Round 1: Stepping out their corners, each fighter circles clockwise, stabbing in single punches to start, Joo looks to smack Jaime first with a left hook, instead she just misses her range as Jaime dances back, then strikes a counter right into the face of the Korean beauty to knock her back a step, Jaime stepping in with a left to the body, getting nudged back as first points go to the local fighter, who gets a rousing cheer from the crowd.
Joo is landing a few good single punches, she is wary though as Jaime shows her defensive prowess, to dodge then land some sweetly timed counters already, a counter right to the body of Min-Hee makes her back off near the ropes, Pang switching from defence to attack as she squares up and starts exchanging, Joo getting the worst of it as she has the ropes near her back.
When Joo does land a solid right hook to turn Jaime's head, she finds the home grown fighter moving back to range, with Joo not rushing in, showing respect to Jaime but her coach isn't too happy, wanting her to keep the pressure on her foe as they move back together, trading single punches till the round comes to an end, a great start for Jaime, who taps her gloves together with a little grin, not able to hide that she enjoyed that.
Round 2: Changing tact slightly, Joo starts to use feints to try to draw Jaime in, becoming a chess match of an early part of the round, both land several crisp counters, exchanging some hard punches when they do move in closer together, before they step back to range, eyes firmly locked together as they show their determination to win.
A straight knocks back the head of Jaime, who finds herself forced back onto the ropes, Joo working the body of Jaime with short piston like punches, Jaime holding onto her to slow Joo's momentum, after a little grappling both women do break apart themselves, with Jaime reminding Joo of her success in the opener by slipping a jab to ram one of her own into Joo's lips to knock her back.
Pushing back Jaime after getting caught around her body, Joo slams in a double jab around the forehead of Jaime, then lands a straight into her chest before Jaime can move to her left, making the Singapore model hiss as she takes a step back, covering up more tightly as Min-Hee shows off her skills, the bell rings to a few boos, Joo needing to ignore them as she jogs to her stool, Jaime looking more serious as she walks to her corner, being reminded that she is in for a tough test tonight.
Round 3: Both fighters exchange more punches in volume now, trying to control the action, Joo looking the more comfortable with going toe to toe, using her reach to land several crisp punches around the cheeks of Jaime, getting several hard punches back around her body to make her back off.
As Joo swings in a left hook, Jaime dips under it, then lands an overhand right to the jaw of the singer, making her cry out as her eyes shut, Jaime quick to pounce as she pounds away on the inside, Joo needing to hold onto her when she is driven into a neutral corner, crowd on its feet cheering on their girl as the referee steps in to break them up.
When they resume with just over a minute to go, Joo is a little apprehensive, maybe her confidence is lower then she'd like to admit, with Jaime picking her punches more, landing some nice counters as Joo doesn't throw totally with conviction, leading to her being driven back to the ropes, where Joo shells up until the bell rings, Min-Hee's coach yells at her to get her head in the game, not happy with her one bit for showing a little fear to her opponent, Joo nods before she taps her own cheeks.
Round 4: Joo comes out a little more forceful now, with both slinging in crisp punches around the others face, Jaime slips a straight to land several body shots, making Joo hiss as the crowd roar her on, till Jaime is nudged back by a left forearm, a sweeping right hook catches her on the cheek to turn her head.
On the attack goes Min-Hee, with Jaime forced to move around near the ropes, she is keeping the smaller fighter where it's harder for her to counter, both exchanging with straight punches, a few hooks catch Joo around her cheeks, she comes roaring back with two uppercuts to knock Jaime back against the ropes.
Grabbing hold of Min-Hee, Pang looks relieved to be able to get away from the ropes, into space again she is able to get some rhythm, though Joo is pressuring her more with hooks after her jabs land, getting her range more on point now, hence why when the bell rings, Joo can't help raise her arms in delight, even as the crowd boo her, making her look like she regrets the small celebration, Jaime sneers at her for it too, before they walk back to their stools to be cleaned up.
Round 5: Trading again around the middle of the ring, Jaime slams in a straight to the chest of Joo, who replies with a short left hook up top, both fighters digging in punches before Jaime takes a step back to create a little space, JOO CATCHES HER AROUND HER RIGHT EAR WITH A LEFT HOOK, THEN SLAMS IN AN UPPERCUT THAT SENDS PANG ONTO HER BACK!
There's a few screams and cries of worry as the local girl is down, Joo looks all business as she walks to the neutral corner, 1....2....3... Jaime turns over to her front with a groan, 4....5.....6.. a few pundits ringside wondering if the count is a little slower as Jaime pushes to her knees, shaking her head to get rid of any cobwebs, 7......8.... Jaime pushes to her feet to a loud roar, she nods to the referee that she can continue, fists up to a chant of her name.
Resuming fighting with Joo looking to end things, getting clipped with a few counters though as Jaime dances around the outside part of the ring, getting caught with a straight punch though, as Joo presses Jaime back into the ropes, slinging in hooks hoping to end things now, Jaime grabs on to her in a tight clinch, referee needing to break them apart.
Last thirty seconds of the round sees Jaime looking to keep her guard tight and move, wasting time till the bell rings, Joo doesn't look too bothered as she returns to her corner, her coach though looks annoyed at the referee, clearly thinking there was some home cooking there with the count, not arguing with the referee in case it bites them in their arse, while Jaime is told to not get bogged down in a slugging fight with Joo.
Round 6: Pushing off their stools, the fighters trade stiff punches to start things off, Jaime moving more though as she starts to dart in and out more, Joo sometimes swinging at thin air as she looks to finish things now, instead opening herself up to a counter right straight onto her chin, that straightens her up to a left hook on the same spot to knock her back.
Suddenly momentum is switching again, Jaime ducks under a right hook and lands an uppercut that sends her opponent towards a neutral corner, where a left hook turns Joo's head, FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER UPPERCUT, JOO CRUMBLES DOWN THE TURNBUCKLES TO HER BACKSIDE! BLINKING HARD AS SHE LOOKS STUNNED TO SAY THE LEAST!
Jaime gets a rousing cheer from the crowd, who look much more happier as they stand and are almost celebrating already, 1...2...3.. Joo tries to pull herself up using the ropes to her right, 4...5... Her grip slipping as she is dazed, 6....7... Her coach telling her to get up, barely can be heard under the noise from the crowd, 8...9...10 it's all over with Joo still on her backside!
Winner Jaime Pang KO Round 6
After: Falling to her knees shedding a few tears of joy and relief after coming back to win, Jaime raises her arms in the air as the crowd chant her name, a great night for the Singapore model as she gets the win in front of her fans against an international opponent.
Helped to her feet by her coach, Jaime is given a hug, she tells them "I was scared for a moment, but I did it" making her coach smile, patting their fighter on her back after the hug with a nod to let her know that she really did it, Jaime waving to the fans as she walks back to her stool with a big smile for them.
All this is going on, Joo is helped up after being checked on, she rubs her chin with her right glove, a little shaky as she walks to her stool, sitting down admitting she got caught when she felt she shouldn't, her coach not happy about the slow count as they see it, Joo looks a loss for words at that, not knowing what to say in reply.
Both women get patched and cleaned up, red marks on both fighters cheeks, still they come to the middle of the ring for the final result, Jaime getting her left hand raised in victory, Joo nods and then comes around to give Jaime a hug, no hard feelings in her mind it seems is the answer to her coaches complaints, Jaime smiles and fist bumps Joo to show her respect after a hard fought back and forth bout.
That gives brownie points from the crowd to Joo, some applauding her as she waves to them, then leaves the ring to head to the back, Joo showing her class, though again some would argue she is too nice for her own good, her coach keeping tight lipped at the moment, though they made it clear their view on this fight and the refereeing.
Inside the ring, Jaime does a lap of honour after being given a Singapore flag to carry over her shoulders, representing her country tonight proudly, not her greatest performance of her career but importantly she won on the big stage, leaving the ring not long after, she has another big fight ahead as next week she takes on Lily Collins in Japan, the biggest fight of her career so far, has this been the perfect warm up or will Lily ruin her month? |
