BBU After Dark: Won-young Jang vs. Ella Yam

BEFORE:
Miss Yam scored her first win over local Singaporean Yixin Chen, but hasn’t been in the ring since. It’s perhaps telling to find her here, then, about to face off against Jang Won-young, K-pop megastar, herself with just one win under her belt, but seeking to make it two.

Both Ella and Won-young speaking with a thick accent at the pre-fight press conference, cordial and nervous at first - they’re stepping into the ring as near equals, after all, and won’t have much to go on besides each other’s work outside the squared circle instead.

“I am looking forward to meeting Ella in the ring,” Won-young says with a sweet smile and nod. The K-pop idol has been known for putting on that overly sweetheart persona, and she’s doing so right now knowing the cameras are fully on her, her eyelids batting and lips curled upwards, as she continues. “I wish her the best of luck.”

Ella is a little more direct and no nonsense by contrast, keeping her cool from across the room before responding: “I feel that Won-young’s in the wrong place and time. True, I’m from the world of modeling, but I know a thing or two about fighting for what I want, whereas Miss Jang seems more concerned with protecting her image and pleasing the fans. We’ll see who wants the win more.”

Square off at the podium in the heart of the SIRENs’ Headquarters and Gym in downtown Edinburgh. Both ladies are tall and slender, and it’ll be interesting to see how they play off each other’s similarities. There’s a reluctant handshake at the end of the press proceedings, at least, with Won-young offering a dainty hand before Ella taking it with her eyes narrowed.

Later, it’s a respective crowd that’s packed into the gym hall, as both fighters make ready in their corners of the raised ring. Jang is wearing a white-pink sports bra and long grey tights, going for that superheroine vibe. She struts about the ring, flipping her hair repeatedly and winking to the crowds, before settling into her corner to strap on red gloves. Across from her, Ella has a more narrowed glare, simple black sports bra and white boxing trunks for bottoms. She’s wearing a pair of blue gloves for this second debut over here in the BBU.

Who will come out on top? The next generation of FCBA fighters looks set to start their journeys! Referee signals for the bell and HERE WE GO with ten rounds of Lightweight action!

ROUND 1:
From the outset, Won-young exhibits a surprising level of composure and tactical awareness. She moves around the ring with a fluid, almost too casual grace, her red gloves poised and raised. She seems focused on proving her skills beyond her public persona. She takes the initiative with a series of methodical body strikes, her punches aimed low at Ella's torso, each strike landing with a thud, her gloves often sinking into the body, testing the model’s early endurance. Ella, caught off guard by Won-young's targeted approach, attempts to counter and maintain her distance. She throws a few jabs and crosses, trying to disrupt Won-young's rhythm, but the K-pop star's blocking and blasting at the body shots continues to be effective. Won-young's strategy pays off as she lands a particularly impactful combination midway through the round. A left hook followed by a right straight digs into the midsection, forcing a visible reaction from the model-turned-boxer. Ella's body folds slightly under the impact, a clear sign of the effectiveness of Won-young's strikes. Soon, the bell rings to conclude Round 1, and Won-young returns to her corner with a sense of satisfaction, having successfully taken the round by a closer margin. Ella, on the other hand, is rubbing her midsection as though she’s been violated, and casts Won-young a glare as they pass each other by.

ROUND 2:
Jang carries her momentum from the first round into the second, moving in with the same fluid grace that marked her earlier performance, her red gloves ready to continue her methodical assault. In the first minute, she continues to target Yam's body, throwing jabs up high to distract before landing low thump thumps to the torso, a clear demonstration of her intent to weaken her opponent’s stamina with every breath and grunt uttered from Ella’s lips. However, Ella begins to mirror Won-young's tactics, turning her focus to the South Korean's body as well. Her blue gloves find their mark, delivering a stunning bash to the cheek before throwing a flurry into Jang’s toned abs in turn, another solid left hook slammed into the side of Won-young's ribs, followed by a straight right to dig deep into her midsection. Jang falters, those ruby lips parted, her lean body reacting to each hit with slight winces and adjustments. As the round progresses, Ella’s strikes grow more confident and forceful, catching Jang across the chin and forehead, and while the South Korean starlet is also throwing punches back, they’re more a defensive gesture and not designed to hurt the Chinese model. Bell rings to signal the end of Round 2, and both fighters step back, their expressions a mix of exhaustion and determination. Ella’s turned the tide, but not by much, throwing this rookie fight wide open.

ROUND 3:
Won-young, her confidence slightly shaken from the previous round, adopts a more cautious approach. She circles Ella, her red gloves raised defensively, looking for an opening. Her movements are deliberate, a mix of quick footwork and feints, as she tries to gauge the model’s response. Ella, on the other hand, seems emboldened by her success in Round 2. She advances with a more aggressive stance, her blue gloves leading the charge. She throws a series of feints at the head, trying to draw her into a trap, before lunging at her guard with multiple flurries that end with bigger swings. But the South Korean starlet skillfully ducks and weaves, then countering with a quick jab to Ella's face, followed by another one-two bam blam to the midsection, making her stagger back. Won-young capitalizes, following after and launching more face-seeking jabs, followed by a hook that lands squarely on Ella's ribs, eliciting a sharp "ugh" from the model. Won-young's strikes are more varied now, mixing head and body shots, keeping Ella guessing. The rest of the round sees multiple clinches as the fighters vie for control. In these close encounters, their bodies press against each other, each fighter using her strength to try and dominate. The referee keeps a close eye, stepping in to separate them when the clinch becomes too prolonged. Won-young manages to pull ahead in the final seconds, using an opening during one such tie-up to deliver a series of short, sharp body shots that make Ella wince. When the bell rings, Won-young heads back to her corner with a slight advantage, having pulled away in the latter part of the round. Ella, still very much in the fight, returns to her corner, her team offering quick advice and encouragement.

ROUND 4:
Won-young, having gained a slight advantage in the previous round, starts off strong. She maintains her distance from Ella, using her reach to her advantage. Her red gloves dart out in quick succession, targeting Ella's face with a series of jabs and crosses. Each punch thuds into her guard, aiming to keep Ella at bay and disrupt her rhythm. Some of her gloves do connect with the model’s nose and lips, causing her head to jerk back slightly with each hit. Ella, however, is undeterred, and keeps up the pressure. Midway through the round, she finds an opening and surges in with a left jab straight to the kisser before following up with a powerful blast across the jawline, a sharp "CRACK!" that momentarily stuns the South Korean starlet. Backed against the ropes, Ella drubs a powerful hook across Won-young's face, snapping her head, a look of shock and pain flashing across her face. Ella then shifts her attention to Won-young's body, launching a series of brutal uppercuts into the pit of Won-young's stomach, churning her pale flesh and gloves dug deep, forcing her body to lurch forward with each hit. Won-young's midsection folds over each glove, her toned abdominal muscles contorting under the relentless assault, making the rest of her body jerk and shudder, each landed punch drawing a pained gasp from her lips. In this dire situation, Won-young can do little but try to hold onto Ella. Her hands paw weakly at Ella's neck and shoulders, as her guard falters the longer she tries to weather this assault. Finally, Yam steps back at the bell and the referee's insistence, a cocky smile and nod at having done some damage this round. Meanwhile, Won-young, visibly hurt and breathing heavily, stumbles back to her corner, her team quickly attending to her.

ROUND 5:
There’s a sudden change in the wind as Won-young tries her own hand at some aggression! She charges out of her corner, looking to turn this fight around, and Ella looks surprised by those early flurries sent to her face, forced to back away in panic. Jang bashes away at the guard, snagging the nose and tummy with fast jabs, before closes in on Ella, before backing the lanky model into her own corner, with limited room to maneuver. And the crowd watches in anticipation as Won-young prepares to exact her revenge! With a snarl, Won-young unleashes a flurry of left and right hooks aimed at Ella's midsection, her red gloves flying in left and right and targeting her tummy and toned abs! Ella's body reacts and absorbs, invasive leather snatching at tummy flesh and abs, and her attempts to defend herself are hampered by her position against the ropes, her body jerking with each powerful hook. The Korean idol seems intent on proving her mettle in the ring, demonstrating that she can dish out as much punishment as she has endured. Ella, trapped and under siege, tries to weather the storm. Her arms move downwards to guard her battered midsection, occasionally fighting back with the odd snap of Won-young’s head to the side with a hook of her own. This is how Yam turns the tide, drawing a loud grunt as Won-young’s goes reeling sideways and backing away after another overhand haymaker crunched into her nostrils. Ella shoving off the corner and capitalizing, harassing the wounded girl with more combos before a heavy cross SCREAMS in down the middle and CRACKS into the other girl’s jawline, the blow stunning Won-young, her legs wobbling under the force! OUCH! AND HERE COMES ELLA, bashing away at the head and body, forcing her back even more! Won-young’s suddenly in trouble, her assault blunted and now struggling to defend herself, her attempts to block and evade not fast enough, as a nasty left hook to the body folds her over to the side before Ella unleashes a snap uppercut right to her porcelain chin! THERE SHE GOES! Won-young reeling backwards before COLLAPSING to her side, her mouth working uselessly and eyelids fluttering in panic! The gym hall erupts at the KNOCKDOWN from Ella Yam, and the referee immediately rushes in to begin the count! But Won-young, dazed and disoriented, struggles to make sense of her surroundings, trying to sit up on the canvas but the rest of her body still reeling from side to side. The referee's count echoes through the gym, and by the count of ten, Won-young is still on the mat, unable to rise! And it’s OVER!

AFTER:
The gym hall comes alive with the roar of the crowd, and Ella, her adrenaline still surging, parades around the ring, her arms raised triumphantly. She moves with a confident swagger, her blue gloves still on, her face flushed with the exhilaration of victory.

Her gaze falls on Won-young Jang's prone form, still lying on the canvas, being attended to by her team. The defeated fighter’s breathing is heavy, her face marked with the strain of the bout, and her limbs appear drained of strength. For a moment, Ella considers approaching her fallen opponent, her eyes reflecting a momentary desire to rub in her victory. However, after a brief pause, she decides against it, choosing instead to maintain her composure and sportsmanship.
Backstage, the atmosphere is charged as both fighters speak to the press. Ella, still riding the high of her win, is hungry and eager for more challenges. She speaks with a confident tone, her words laced with a hint of criticism: "I expected more from a DRAGONs fighter," Ella remarks, her voice firm. "I'm ready for bigger challenges. This is just the beginning for me."

Won-young, on the other hand, presents a different demeanor from her usual cute and friendly persona. Visibly affected by the loss, there's a slight break in her usual composure as she addresses the media. Despite the setback, she vows to come back stronger and do better for her fans. "I'm disappointed, but not defeated," Won-young says, her voice tinged with determination. "I'll learn from this and come back stronger. I owe it to my fans and to myself."

It’s a poor start to the young Korean’s in-ring dreams indeed, and rarely do we see a fighter make her debut as part of a new stable with so early of a loss. Can’t say we blame her entirely, with Miss Yam’s training and reach advantage too many obstacles for her to overcome in the end.
