Before: “Sure, Florence Pugh is a little older and bigger than me but that just makes her more of a challenge,” says an eager Brec Bassinger. “I am on a 3 fight winning streak. I’ve beaten Mish Williams, Sabrina Carpenter and Maddie Ziegler. Florence? Well, last time out she couldn’t beat Milly Brown. Of course, not many fighters have, including me, but, still, if Milly can beat her—so can I. That will be a big step for me getting my Flyweight Title back.”
Florence Pugh eyes Brec with some amusement: “You do seem to have it all planned out, Ms. Bassinger, but, while it is true I lost to Milly—it’s also true she’s the one you lost your title belt too. Oh, I don’t blame you for scheming to get it back, but I have no intention of advancing your plans at my expense. So expect to have to come up with new plan after I have beaten the curl out of your curly hair.”
“Very funny,” the younger woman sniffed. “You won’t be laughing when this is over.”
“And neither will you,” Florence promised. “You are entirely to impudent. You need a lesson,”
“Not as much as your do!” Brec growled.
The tension between the two was growing, but (much to the disappointment of the hopeful) they gave each other a looks of daggers and made their separate exits.
Meeting in the ring on Fight Night, Florence is in a blue and black one piece with blue gloves and boots (black laces). Her hair is pulled back in a battle braid. Brec is in a sexy black one piece with yellow boots and gloves (black laces). Brec’s hair is in a messy ponytail. Cold looks ae exchanged between Brec and Florence during the instructions. The referee covers the rules promptly and there is a curt tappng of gloves before they go to their corners. The bell rings.
R1: Florence and Brec are rapidly out of their corners and clash in the idle of the rig. It is rapid-fire exchange as they circle around each other. Her shots going to the head, but then the body is worked over and finally more head shots. The punch rates are staying even as he minutes tick by. Brec attempting to fake Florence out with feints to the body while striking at her jaw, but Florence not biting. Brec then goes up the middle with hooks to the ribs, but she is met by rib roasting shots from Florence. The two are pounding away at each other’s midsections down to the bell. No surprise that this hard punching round comes back a DRAW.
R2: Florence Pugh crowding in on Brec Bassinger as the new round commences. Florence using short right and left hooks to pound Brec’s body. Brec digs in and fights back with hooks to the body of the Brit. Tough, whacking blows from both fighters has the crowd excited. It looks like this might end up as another tie, but Florence suddenly steps back, causing Brec to lurch forward and take a solid right uppercut to the chin. Brec stumbles back, struggling to regain her senses as Florence bangs shots off the top of Brec’s head Bell sounds before Florence can get Brec down, but she has pulled out a close win on the round—and Brec looks shaky going back to her corner.
R3: PLP corner crew working hard to get Brec out for the new round and when the bell sounds Brec does seem to be moving much better. Florence heads right for Brec, clearly eager to follow up on her successful close of the previous round. However, as hey draw near, Brec leaps forward and bring a BOOMING right to the side of Florence’s head. Florence is knocked sideways by the impact and flounders against the ropes. Brec is on her with a furious leather storm of punching that keeps Florence huddled against the ropes just trying stay on her feet. Florence trying to slide along the ropes, but she is blocked by Brec. Florence does manage to get some jabs out to try to disrupt the relentless attack, but mostly it is Brec ounching and Florence taking it. Bell sounds to end Florence’s ordeal. She is the one moving shaily back to her corner as Brec savors a round she knows she’s won wide.
R4: LMW corner works hard on the battered Florence, but comes out moving cautiously for the new round. Brec now tries dancing around the sluggish Florence while peppering her punches mainly to the head, but some to Florence’s side ribs. Florence seems in defensive mode, but suddenly she lashes out with a crunching fight to Brec’s jaw. As Brec lurches back, Florence now adds right/left uppercuts in Brec’s chin. Brec again knocked back and Florence moves in on her, but Brec is jabbing back rapidly on pure instinct. Enough of these jabs slam into Florence’s face to stall her attack. Then Brec pulls herself together and counterattacks with belly hooks to drive Florence back, bent over at the waist, but protecting her head as time runs out. Brec wina round on the judges’ cards, but only by a narrow margin.
R5: The round gets started and Florence Pugh seems to have gotten her second wind. She moves quickly to midring and starts hammering away at Brec Bassinger’s high guard. Initially, Brec’s defenses hold, but Florence is also keeping Brec from doing much in the way of countering punching. Then as Florence is bobbing and weaving to add to Brec’s confusion, she sees and opening a slips in a big right uppie in behind Brec’s guard to smite her chin. Brec’s knees momentarily buckle and Florence then follows with a barrage of hooks to the midsection. Brec is doubled up and trying to get out of range. Florence making Brec’s head ring with shots off her head as the round closes out. Big comeback round for Florence Pugh as she wins R5 wide.
R6: Brec and Florence go right at it as soon as they can reach each other in the middle of the ring. Both trying to land carefully chosen knockdown shots, but they are both able to dodge or blunt most of these in the opening minute. Then Brec goes HARD into Florence’s midsection with a flurry of deep hooks that jackknife Florence forward and then KA-BOOM! KA-BOOM! Brec lands the right/left combination against Florence’s chin and she suddenly goes wobbly. Brec fast to follow up with rights and lefts to the jaw AND DOWN ON HER BACKSIDE GOES FLORENCE PUGH!
Brec goes happily to the neutral corner, but the smile soon fades as Florence is able to make back to her feet to beat the count;. Florence gives Brec a fierce look and signals “Come and get me!” with her gloves. Brec more happily to oblige and this sets off a lively exchange of head shots. Both fighters gets knocked back on their heels from this, but neither goes down by the time the bell rings. Thanks to the knockdown, Brec wins the round wide, but Florence gives Brec a shoulder bump to let her know this fight is not over. Brec not appreciating the message, but referee steps in to calm things down.
R7: Bell rings and out they come. Both moving fast and Brec can be see cranking back her right for her opening shot. But Florence Pugh has other ideas: she makes a sudden lateral move that causes B rec to stumble passed her. Then as Brec back KA-BOOM! Florence Pugh’s right explodes in Brec’s face. Brec reels ack, her nose suddenly bloody and she having trouble getting her mitts up around her face. This must have been just what Florence had intended as now she pours in rights and lefts to Brec’s jaw spinning her head first one way and then the other. Then Florence rams home the uppercuts to Brec’s chin AND BREC CRUMBLES TO HER KNEES THEN PITCHES FORWARD ON HER FACE.
Florence strides firmly to the neutral corner. Referee is standing above the fallen Brec and counting. Brec does stir and pushes herself up to all fours, but when she tries to go further, her body shudders and she collapses into heap.
“EIGHT!....NINE!...TEN!...YOU’RE OUT!” calls the referee;.
THE WINNDER FLORENCE PUGH DEFEATS BREC BASSINGER KO7!
After: “Pesky kid! She gave me a lot of trouble but I am not that easy to beat. I can’t tell you how happy I was see her bloody nose and all, kissing the canvas! I am now looking forward to the night I do that to Millie Bobby Brown!” declares a happy Florence Pugh after the fight.
Meanwhile Brec Bassinger doesn’t have any comments until the next day: “OK, I let that one get away. I should have known she was ready to come back after the knockdown in the 6th, but I wanted to finish her off. Instead, I was the one who got finished. Plan B? I have no idea right now but my management and I will come up with somethingl There are plenty of fights for me this year and that will include a title shot.”
Exciting contest that seemed to be in doubt right up to that final KO in the 7th. Very good win for Florence Pugh. She had to take a lot of punishment, recover and then flatten Brec Bassinger and she did. No doubt a bitter loss for young Brec Bassinger This could have been the kind of win she needed to get her coveted new title shot, but that’s not how it turned out. However, we think she and her PLP managers will be working hard to get her back on track and the year is young. |
