Millie Bobby Brown versus Natalie Portman
(Results: Lookout. Words: Wiz)
BEFORE:
Absolute classic brunette battle sees veteran Hall of Famer Natalie squaring off with Millie, who'd definitely be considered "up and coming" or a "hot prospect" except that, at age 20, she's already won two dozen FCBA fights AND a Unified Flyweight Title. Considering the respective pedigrees of the fighters, one would think a lot of respect would be tossed around. One would be wrong.
"Portman's past it," says Millie with a shake of the head. "I used to watch her when I was a little girl. She won her first fight two years before I was BORN. She's got no chance against me. None."
"THIS little girl," says Natalie with a snarl, "Is about to learn a painful lesson at my feet...which is exactly where she's about to end up."
ROUND ONE:
Millie goes to work and takes immediate control. The Brit has a speed advantage, and she uses it perfectly in the opening stanza. She's moving the feet, but this isn't jab and circle stuff. She's bouncing in and out, getting off quickly, blocking or slipping counters from the older woman. Natalie's trying to locate with the jab, but can't get it done for the most part. She's short or late on a lot of stuff, and, as a result it's Brown who has much the better of things throughout. Portman has a moment or two, but that's about all she can manage. Thus, when the bell rings ending the first, Brown has taken things very wide indeed and leads 10-9.
ROUND TWO:
Portman adjusting. She's keeping the guard up, moving the head, doubling and tripling up on the jab. Brown still moving in and out, getting to spots and getting off, but now she's being preempted more by Natalie's offense. Result is a good, two-way round in which both brunettes get some, but not all of what they want, meaning there's not a lot in it. Instead of either woman taking control, both fighters get work done in a brilliant, back-and-forth effort, the kind that purists absolutely love. Final fifteen seconds see Natalie land a pair of right hands, her best of the fight, and those rights are jusssstttt enough to get her over the line. Portman takes the points narrowly to even things at 19.
ROUND THREE:
More of the same. It's two-way stuff as the brunettes battle on even terms. It's Natalie's skill and experience against Millie's speed, and, for the second round in a row, those strengths offset one another very well and neither fighter is able to impose will. Instead, we get moments, like about a minute in when Brown backs up Portman with a pair of combinations, or, in the final minute, when Natalie lands a solid right hand and then hooks rack, forcing Millie to back and cover. Once again, it's extremely close when the bell rings ending the frame, and, once again, it's Portman who takes the points, moving her into a narrow 29-28 lead.
ROUND FOUR:
Same again. Ladies have each found something that works, to a point, and they're sticking with it. So, for the third round in a row, we get good, two-way stuff with not a lot in it...BOOM! Right hand, MILLIE and Natalie is HURT! Brown times a PERFECT right and Portman is STEPPIN' IN FENCE POST HOLES! British beauty all in, driving Natalie back to the ropes and SAVAGING her to the body and paying her back to the rack, all while trying to lower that guard. Older brunette not obliging, however. She's keeping the hands high, putting the body on sale, riding it out as the Brit piles up points and punishment. At the bell, Natalie's still standing, but Millie's taken it wide to even things at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Brown in control. Natalie still plenty wobbly, and Millie taking full advantage, piling up points and punishment. Brit working mostly upstairs now, as she's looking to finish this thing, all while effecting a solid clean up. Portman willing to give ground, stay on the defensive. She's managing to stay off the ropes, and even counter in spots, but she's definitely taking the worst of it. As the round goes on, however, the older woman shakes the worst of the damage and begins banging back. It's far too late to make a difference in the fifth, of course, but a huge opportunity for Millie has gone wanting. At the bell, Brown's won it wide and leads 48-47, but Portman is still standing.
ROUND SIX:
Interlude over and we're back to two-way action. Again, the brunettes are working tactically, Brown in and out, looking to get to spots and get off in combination, Portman with the jab, doubling, tripling, trying to keep it in Brown's face and slow the younger girl down with it. Once again, both fighters have their moments and neither can extend those enough to grab control of the proceedings. Instead, it's back and forth as both fighters score with clean shot here and there and both play excellent defense. Final seconds see a BIG flurry in which both fighters land hard right hands, but, at the bell, there's almost nothing in it. Almost. Because Portman's taken the points narrowly to even things again, this time at 57.
ROUND SEVEN:
Ladies working on even terms to start the seventh. Again it's Brown's speed against Portman's skill, and, again, the two are offsetting one another very we...BOOM! Right hand, NATALIE and MILLIE IS HURT! Brown stumbling backward and Natalie is ALL IN! Portman winging away with both hands, sending Millie reeling backward and DOWN GOES BROWN! A right hook from Portman and the Brit is dropped to her back! Natalie quickly to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Brown sitting up at six, getting to her feet at seven but STUMBLES BACK TO THE CANVAS at eight! It's OVER! Millie can't beat the count and it's OVER and your winner by KO7 is Natalie Portman!
AFTER:
Portman matter-of-fact in the post. "As I told you," the Queen says haughtily, "She was always going to end up at my feet. When WILL these young girls learn? All of their youth is no match for my CLASS." |
