Nicola Cavanis versus Odette Yustman
Yustman had been challenging, to say the least. For six rounds Nicola had sought to fell her, yet Odette had stood fast and true before the strength and vigors of youth. Twelve years she had on her, aye, yet there was something of one who had been champion that equalized them. But for the three rounds she had taken out of the six they had fought, age was age, and most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it. Most women, too.
“I sought for you for my first match,” she said to her. Round seven was the time to end it, she thought.
“I was not there,” Odette answered. Her fist followed her words only to meet air. “Woe to you if I had been,” Nicola’s counter-uppercut whiffed against her guard in an explosive mist.
“Before my first title match, I wondered where you were. I would’ve liked to test my mettle upon you.”
“Far away,” Yustman said, “or it would be I who sit the throne.”
“ False,” Nicola told her, "Zero to one you are, and I shall make that two. You are tired. You are flagging. You shall fall.” Nicola felt exhausted herself, but threw another punch anyway. There were some advantages to being young.
“My knees do not bend easily,” said the former champion.
“Even Ivana Knoll has fallen before me. I nearly put Kate Upton on her back despite her having a weight class on me.” Nicola forced her guard again, cracking it open with a jab only for her follow up to breeze past her opponent’s nose. “This close I was, and you are not of that ilk.”
“Knoll is a good fighter and true-”
“-But she was not a champion,” old Yustman pointed out. “A champion does not flee.”
“Then or now,”. She donned her brave face, and looked Nicola in the eye.
Yustman’s fists moved up before her, rising in a guard for the last and final time. “And now it begins,” said Odette Yustman, former Queen of the Ice Hotel, former lightweight champion, formerly unconquered. Her eyes blazed again as stars in the sky, alive with light.
“No, she said, with sadness in her voice. “No. Now it ends.”
Nicola dove forward in a spear, with her fist leading the vanguard. Odette sidestepped the lunge, coming around with a hook, but only caught air as Nicola twirled around in a rising uppercut, clipping chin, and Yustman went down.
