Before: “So we meet again,” Lily James tells Mary Elizabeth Winstead, “what’s it been? 2 years? I am flattered you want another try at me.”

“I don’t like to give up at one fight someone. Besides, I also like fighting hot young fighters. You’ve gone from 12-0 (after you beat me) to 22-4. I would like to join that small but distinguished group of boxers who have beaten you,” Mary said cheerfully.

“Maybe I should arrange for ‘I BEAT LILY JAMES’ tee shirts for you all!” Lily suggest.

“I would like mine in black and gold,” Mary said.

“I was joking,” Lily said tartly.

“Oh, too bad, it was a good idea. I guess I will just have to settle for adding another ‘L’ to your record,” Mary replied.

“Or another ‘W—with you getting the ‘L’—and you have a lot of those,” Lily points out.

“Oh, you’ll get getting more. Just you wait and see,” Mary informed her.

“I’m not worrying about it. See you in the ring,” Lily concluded.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be there,” Mary assured.

Sure enough, Mary Elizabeth Winstead was indeed in the ring on Fight Night and so was Lily James. Lily James was in a pale yellow one piece with black gloves and boots (yellow laces). Her hair was pulled back in a battle braid. Mary was in one of her favorites, a red with white polka dots one piece with white gloves and boots (red laces), Her bobbed hair was wetted down.

The ring instructions proceeded smoothly. Then came the tap of the gloves and they went back to their corners. The bell rang…

R1: Mary and Lily moved promptly to the center of the ring. Lily came in first aiming her initial punches at Mary’s rib cage. Mary took the punches and aimed her counters at Lily’s head. Lily was trying to duck under these shots, but Mary nailed her to the chin with two quick rising uppercuts. Then, as Lily lurched back, Mary fired a barrage of hooks into Lily’s midsection, doubling her forward. Mary then smoothly tried to work Lily back into the ropes, Lily fought back with counters, trying to fight her way clear, but was driven back by double clip to the chin and nearing the ropes. Mary was working Lily back to the strands with body blows, but Lily managed to delay this enough or the bell to ring. However MEW had the satisfactioin o getting off to a fast start with a first round won wide.

R2: Mary came trotting forward eagerly as the new round began, but Lily came boiling out of her corner She feinted a left at Mary’s ribs, but brought a powerhouse right that struck Mary between the eyes. Mary recoiled in shock as the impact crashed through her brain. She was slow to bring up her guard and Lily poured in the follow-up rights and lefts that tore into Mary’s face. Mary finally got her gloves up around her swollen and bleeding face, but now Lily James was driving her leather into Mary’s midsection. Mary’s ribs were given special attention as they were turned into raging sources of pain. Mary was shuddered, hunched up and just trying to stay on her feet. She was forced into the ropes and now Lily punched her from breest to belly and back again. Mary somehow held on to the bell, but she had to grab the top rope and steady herself for a few moments before returning to her corner. Lily Janes went to her corner having won the round in a shutout.

R3: The Foxfire corner crew was obliged to work hard, but they were able to get Mary out for the new round. Lily came in cautiously, well-aware of Mary’s legendary recuperative powers and sure enough Mary made the first move with fast jabs into Lily’s face. Stung, Lily lashed back at Mary’s face, but Mary slipped to one side and clouted Lily to the side of the head, Lily turned to meet this threat and there was a sharp exchange of head shots. Now Lily’s was starting a lump up, though not so much as MEW’s bruised countenance. Then Mary went after Lily to the ribs and Lily quickly answered. Now the pair were toe to toe firing in the short, punishing rights and lefts. Lily had the advantage of having already damaged Mary’s torso and as she pounded it over and over Mary was forced to pull away. Mary then circled and went after Lily to the head, but time ran out on the round. It was a close one, but Lily James was awarded the round on the judges’ cards.

R4: Mary was not backing down as the new round began. She rapidly closed on Lily and went right after her to the body with whacking blows. Lily was staggered by these initial punches, but rallied and went after Mary’s ribs once more. However Mary somehow hung on despite the punishment being dished out to her midsection. This made Lily try harder, but suddenly Mary stepped back as Lily was pressing forward. As Lily lurched forward she suddenly encountered Mary’s gloved fist connecting with the bridge of her nose. Lily shuddered as an electric shock of pain tore through her body. She covered up and fell back as Mary came at her body punching, Lily was dripping blood from her nose, but she managed counter enough to stall Mary’s offensive. Then the bell sounded. It was another close round, but the judges gave this one to Mary Winstead.

R5: Although the IBB corner crew had done their best, Cree Cicchino was moving more slowly a the new round commenced. Cree had her guard up around her head and seemed to be adopting a defensive posture this round. Mary Winstead was not at all defensive. She advanced steadily on Cree and was striking at her in quick, well-placed bursts. The early action saw MEW going after Cree’s rib cage (and now adding her side ribs to her target list). She added deep hooks to the belly to try to knock the air out of Cree. This constant pressure to the body drew some jabbing counters early, but these did not slow Mary down. Then, late in the round, Cree tried stronger counters by swinging at Mary’s jaw. These did land, but Mary could now reply with even stronger punches to rock Cree to the jaw and chin. Cree had to cover up again by the time the bell sounded. Round went wide to MEW.

R6: If anyone thought Lily James was finished, they were rudely awakened as Lily suddenly came out fighting in the 6th. Among those startled appeared to be Winnie Winstead who was greeted with a smash to the moth that split her lower lip and a follow-up to the nose that had blood trickling down to her chin. Lily was also getting to Mary’s jaw and chin with power enough to swivel Mary’s head and make her chin bob up and down. Mary staggered back with her high guard weak. This allowed Lily the chance to bust up Mary to the face once gain. Mary finally tightened her head protection, but Lily was free to work the Winstead ribs with ferocity. Mary was clearly shuddering under these impacts and did punch back into Lily’s ribs. The two exchanged rib roasters to the bell, with Lily getting the better of these punches and forcing Mary to retreat. Lily James in a big comeback round won it wide.

R7: Bell sounded and both fighters were out aggressively. They opened with body punching, but this time it was Winnie landing with more power. Lily was clearly jolted with each Mary smash into her ribs. These blows seemed to disrupt the timing and power of Lily’s own rib punches. Then Mary drove a barrage of digging belly punches into Lily that jackknifed her body forward with a gurgling moan. Suddenly, Lily’s high defenses faltered and Mary drove home a blistering series of uppercuts to the chin one after the other. Lily’s chin was bouncing alarmingly as she teetered backwards and then Mary fired in the classic left hook/right cross combination and LILY JAMES CORKSCREWS DOWN TO THE CANVAS IN A HEAP!

Mary wastes no time in getting to the neutral corner. She watched as the referee counted over Lily who was trying desperately to getting her blasted body to rise up. She tried valiantly, actually making it to a crouching position only to topple back down as the referee was calling out:

“NINE!...TEN!...YOU’RE OUT!”

THE WINNER: MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD DEFEATED LILY JAMES KO7!

After: Mary smiles as she raises her arm in victory. Then goes over to assist the referee in helping Lily James to her feet. She gives the groggy Lily a big hug before turning over to the referee to escort to the LMW corner.

“Well, now we are 1-1. I hope she’s up for a rubber match one of these days. I like fighting her. She’s tough one, but this time I was tougher and get the ‘W’. This was a good night for me. I hope I get more of them this year.”

As for Lily James, she comments the next morning: “Mary Winstead may have the greatest record in the FCBA, but she’s got to be one of the most dangerous fighters in the Lightweight Division. You think you got her beat, but then she comes back and you are on the canvas with your head full of ringing bells. Which is not to say I think she’s better than me. We are 1-1 and maybe we’ll have a rubber match some day. I’ll have to see what my management thinks.”

Another hard punching Mary Winstead fight. She doesn’t always win this kind of fight, but this time she was able to put an excellent younger fighter on the canvas. Lily James might want to call this a ‘learning experience’, This is only her 5th loss in 26 fights and one can learn from setbacks like this. Observers look forward to seeing both the veteran and relative newcomer in future action.
