Intro:
First semi final sees Erin Willerton and Gigi Hadid hope to take a step closer to the Diamond Boxing Tournament spot. Erin beat Jourdan Dunn to get to this stage, while Gigi defeated Eileen Gu to get her first win in a few years. Both look in great shape so this will be a tough test on paper for them both.
As the Alanah Pearce Vs Alexina Graham bout is going on. Roving reporter Lexi Neir first heads into the locker room of Erin to ask her a few questions but her sister Amy steps in as Erin gets her arms and legs massaged.
Amy tells Lexi "sorry for being rude but Erin needs a moment to recover. She did have a tough test to start the night off. Jourdan is a hard hitter after all but Erin is ready to win this entire fight." Smiling as she looks over at her sister. Erin nodding back to her.
"This is the time that Erin enters the spotlight where she belongs. I used the Diamond Boxing Tournament to get myself into title contention, Erin should be signed up to a stable and will become a world champion in future" adds Amy as she certainly is doing a good job as hype woman for Erin.
Lexy then heads into Gigi's locker room to see her chatting away with her sister Bella. Lexy gets a chance this time to talk to the fighter as Gigi waves her over to come sit by her left side. Gigi tells her "one down, two more to go" with a beaming smile.
Bella then says "Gigi has been put into positions she shouldn't when it comes to this sport. Last minute calls to fight so she hasn't had time to train, they know she is the big star of this entire event so thankfully she has had the time to train and you saw a taste of what she can do."
It's Gigi who finishes the conversation as she says "Erin is a good fighter but I have more experience and simply am a better fighter then her. That golden ticket is going to be mine." Lexy thanks them for their time before she leaves them to prepare for this bout.
Levi's Stadium in San Francisco is buzzing as first out comes Erin again with just her coach. She is wearing red gloves, navy blue sports bra with white trim, matching trunks and shoes, her hair is in a ponytail as she steps into the ring. Tapping the top turnbuckle of her corner as she looks fired up.
Now Gigi walks out with her coach behind her, Bella is sitting in the front row cheering her on as she walks towards the ring. Gigi is wearing a gold coloured sports bra with black trim, matching trunks and shoes, gold coloured gloves with her hair tied into a braid finish her attire. Climbing through the ropes into the ring, Gigi paces in her corner as her coach tells her to prove herself worthy to be here.
Both women walk to the middle of the ring with their eyes locked in a tense stare down. The referee finishes the instructions with both quick to fist bump their opponent before they return to their corners. Once they are ready the bell rings to start 10 rounds of welterweight action.
Round 1:
Pushing out their corners to engage their opponent, there's a little fiery exchange to start the fight. Gigi dances back out the way of a left hook before countering with a jab square into the forehead of the overbalanced Erin to knock her head back.
While Erin is landing some nice shots. It is Gigi landing the cleaner punches as she is up on her toes willing to move on the perimeter of the ring. Erin is a little too open as she wants to win this bout maybe a little too keenly. Gigi landing through her open guard onto her face with more combos as they move closer to the end of the round.
A left hook does catch Gigi on her cheek late in the round. Erin backs her onto the ropes, where Gigi covers up. The bell rings to end the round with Erin looking annoyed at herself for getting caught out as easily as she did. Gigi meanwhile nodding to her sister outside the ring to tell her she has this fight in the bag in her view already.
Round 2:
Not as loose with her guard now. Erin is starting to force the issue more as she is able to work more at midrange with Gigi. Both landing some nice shots around the others flanks as they start to land more harder shots. Gigi still is showing off her footwork to keep from being pinned down and does start to land more counter punches as they head into the second minute of the round.
A straight to the chest of Gigi does catch her out as her eyes half shut. A left cross follows to knock her back a step. Erin now pushing the tempo up a notch as she is walking down Gigi. The American is swinging from her back foot as she tries to ward off Erin.
Pushing Erin back so she isn't pinned down, Gigi moves into space and lands some nice straight shots into the face of Erin as again Erin begins loosing up her guard too much. The round ends with Erin having a little pink hue to the left side of her face. Gigi meanwhile rubs her chest as she didn't enjoy getting hit there.
Round 3:
Resuming with eyes firmly locked as the crowd is fired up for this one. Gigi scores early on with her jab but she loads up too much on a right hook that Erin leans out the way of. A counter straight snaps the head of Gigi back before she takes another hard left hook to her cheek.
Erin is pressing the action as Gigi is being forced onto the back foot. Nice head movement from Willerton allows her to dodge and strike now as confidence is flowing through the English rose. Gigi needing to clinch up as she feels the turnbuckles of her own corner on her back. Some rabbit punches exchanged by both fighters to the back of their opponents head. Referee warning them to keep it clean, even though it was Gigi who started it off.
Back at it they go with Gigi starting to double up her jabs. Making Erin have to box more at range. Willerton is starting to land some sweeping shots across Gigi's boobs to unsettle the American. The bell rings with Gigi cursing at Erin, who grins as she returns to her corner.
Round 4:
Like there's a switch went off in Gigi's head, she comes out more aggressive to start. Engaging in close range with Erin. Who looks happy to square up to Gigi this way. It's bait though as Gigi steps back when a looping left hook comes her way. A counter jab is followed by a right cross to snap back the head of Willerton to the delight of some in the crowd.
Erin finds herself now being herded around the perimeter as Gigi is planting her feet more at times to throw in hooks. Other times when the heat starts to come back her way Gigi is moving on her toes backwards to create space and land the counter shots again.
The round is coming to a close when Erin lands an uppercut through the jugs of Gigi onto her chin. Gigi grimaces as she backs off. Erin following her with straight punches up until the bell dings. They walk back to their corners with scowls on their faces as they lock eyes across the ring.
Round 5:
Both are now starting to land more power shots as they exchange. Toes gripping into the canvas as the slap of leather rings out. Erin dips down to land a left/right piston like combo into the stomach of Gigi. A left hook catches Erin around her ear to make her back off as the opening minute is proving to be hard fought.
An uppercut catches Gigi again to knock her onto her heels. Erin looks like she can't miss with that shot as she backs up her opponent onto the ropes. Gigi needs to clinch after eating several clean shots around her face. They grapple for a little bit till the referee can sort them out by pushing them apart.
Plenty of competitive edge to this one as they trade more evenly going into the home stretch of the round. Gigi takes a hard straight into her nose to open her up to a follow up left/right hook combo just before the bell rings. Both are certainly marked up now. Sitting on their stools breathing a little harder as they are starting to feel this fight and the tournament.
Round 6:
Trading around the center of the ring as Gigi is back on her toes. Realising it isn't smart to stand to trade with Erin head to head. Erin is landing a few solid shots to the face of Gigi but is also missing at times and taking counter shots across her face to mark her up more.
A straight catches Erin around her left eye to stop her in her tracks as she raises her left glove to check her eye. AN UPPERCUT CATCHES HER ON THE CHIN TO SEND ERIN DOWN ONTO HER BACKSIDE!
The Hadid supporters are going wild as Bella roars from ringside! Gigi heading to the neutral corner looking at her downed foe. 1....2....3... Erin checks her eye and seems happy enough it isn't swelling up but is watering a little. 4....5....6... Erin pushes to her knees and she heeds her coaches words not to rush up. 7....8... Instead taking the time to get up to her feet, fists raised to show she can fight on.
They resume with Gigi now looking to be the aggressor. Firing several punches at the left eye of Erin, who blocks most as she doesn't want to have it shut up by her opponent. Several times they exchange flurries up until the bell rings. Gigi gets a big cheer from Bella. Erin maybe wishing she had allowed Amy to be beside her right now for support.
Round 7:
Gigi is now hoping to end things as she pushes the pace early on. Erin needing to box more smartly as she moves more near the ropes then she'd hope. Both landing some crisp punches square into faces. Gigi gets caught with a left hook on her jaw when she tries to step in to twist her head.
Back now comes Willerton. She slams in more punches flush to the face of Gigi to back her up to the ropes. Gigi needs to grab hold of her up slow her down. They are pushed apart before they grapple like the last clinch. Gigi looking a little annoyed that she can't seem to trap Erin to end this bout now.
Instead they end up close in trading to the others torso. Heads grinding as they try to overpower each other into the home stretch. They split apart at the bell with both sitting on their stool with sweat dripping off their brows and torsos. Cheeks on both fighters are now reddened up.
Round 8:
Gigi isn't on her toes as much as now she is stepping forwards looking to hurt Erin. Problem she misses with a right cross as Erin moves her head out the way. A RIGHT HOOK CATCHES GIGI ON HER JAW TO SEND SWEAT FLYING BEFORE A LEFT HOOK SENDS GIGI CRASHING TO THE CANVAS!
Erin walks to the neutral corner with eyes that look to have a cold fury to them. 1....2....3... Gigi rolls to her front trying to get up. 4....5....6... She slips back to her front as she is badly rocked. 7....8... Bella is yelling at her sister to stand up. 9.....10 instead she has watch to Gigi get counted out!
Winner Erin Willerton KO Round 8
After:
Erin can't help but yell "yes!" Repeatedly as she lets her emotions out. She is into the final after a hard fought battle. Coming back from the knockdown as she walks over to her corner and sits straight down onto stool as she is tired. Her coach tells her "just one more fight to go, down get tired on me now" with Erin smiling and nodding to them.
While Bella has climbed over the barricade so she can get into the ring to check on Gigi. Who understandably is in tears as she could see the finish line coming up and is down on the ground instead of finishing her story. Bella hugs her sister as they kneel and Erin looks a little guilty that she had to beat Gigi to get closer to her own goal.
Gigi is helped over to her stool so she can be cleaned up and given a drink. She stops crying as she wipes her eyes dry. Gigi tells Bella that she'll be ok. Once Gigi feels up to it she gets up, giving Erin a glare before she is helped out the ring. Clearly Gigi will never forgive Erin for stopping her mission to return to the contender rankings and not swimming around with the hungriest fighters trying to make a statement. Gigi will need to pick herself back up once more.
The winner on the other hand gets her left hand raised in victory. Erin leaves the ring as she knows it is too early to celebrate. She still has the final and a clash with either Alexina Graham or Bianca Belair to look forwards to. She waves to the fans on the way to the back but for now it's time to recover and be ready for the biggest fight of her young career. |
