Intro:
Intriguing generational bout. Dafne Keen is part of this new breed of fighters coming through that has Millie Bobby Brown as arguably its face. Well Natalie Portman seems on a mission to show that her era of elite fighters are not done at the top yet. Natalie just knocked out Millie a month ago and now Dafne steps up to one of the contenders for greatest flyweight of all time.
Before the bout Dafne posted online "I can't wait to fight Natalie. I have a lot of respect for her but a month ago I let myself down against Olivia (Holt), now is my time to step up 🥊🥊" that hypes up her fans.
Natalie on the other hand hasn't any interest in that. She steps to FCBA Network reporter Alicia Atout. Natalie wearing a black dress as she stands hands on her hips. Telling the interviewer "I am glad that the flyweight division has this talent coming through that has all eyes back on the toughest division around."
She points at the camera with her right hand as she continues "but to be clear to any of them who think they can take my spot. I had to fight for this by beating the likes of Claire Danes, Shakira and my friend Michelle Williams. I earned this and guess what kids. You have to put in the hard graft if you want to prove yourself. That certainly goes for you Dafne." Making it clear that she isn't anyone's stepping stone.
Fighting time! First out comes Dafne with her coach Ming-Na Wen to her right. Dafne has a light blue sports bra on with three thin yellow stripes down each side. Matching trunks, blue shoes and gloves, hair tied into a ponytail. She climbs into the ring with a nod to the crowd and a fist bump with her coach.
Now out comes Natalie with a look of confidence. She has Michelle Williams working her corner as they walk side by side towards the ring. Michelle gives a tap on the left shoulder of Natalie before the former champion jogs up the ring steps then gets into the ring. Natalie is wearing a white sports bra with gold stripes down the sides, matching trunks, white gloves and shoes, hair in a ponytail. She bounces on her toes staring intensely at her opponent.
The referee waves the fighters to the middle of the ring. Natalie stares down at Dafne, who shows no fear for the veteran. Both do respectfully touch gloves before they jog back over to their corners. Once ready the bell rings to start 10 rounds of flyweight action.
Round 1:
Out they come with both fencing behind jabs to start. Natalie stepping back when Dafne tries to rush her. Showing her impressive footwork honed from years of boxing and her time training for the "Black Swan" film. She is countering Dafne with straight shots to her face.
Dafne starts to adapt to the task at hand. Using feints to create openings to land around the body of her opponent. Natalie smacks her on her forehead. Keeping Keen predominantly on the outside as the veteran is making her younger rival respect her skills.
The last forty seconds sees Dafne close in to land a crisp left/right hook combo to the body. Natalie grits her mouthpiece before landing a right hook on the ear of Dafne to help work her back out. They exchange at midrange until the bell rings. Ming-Na tells Dafne how she can move in closer as Natalie looked to be dictating the action too easily.
Round 2:
Switching up where she is throwing her jab. Dafne showing some improvement as she moves in closer to land short hooks. Natalie nudges her back out and lands several clean two punch combos into the face of the English fighter to knock her head back. The main thing is the pace is going up a notch.
In the second minute Dafne dips under a straight to land a right into the belly button of Natalie. Who groans out before an overhand left smacks on the cheek of Portman to turn her head. Dafne begins to work with piston like punches into the torso of her opponent to get her into a neutral corner.
Pushing Dafne off, Natalie moves out the corner and shows her defensive boxing skills with piston like jabs and straights smacking into the forehead of an overly keen well... Keen. Dafne showing that youthful excitement over her success that she is rushing in too much late in the round.
The bell dings with Dafne getting told off by Ming-Na for getting too wild late on. Dafne nods as her cheeks turn red blushing. Natalie meanwhile gets wiped down as Michelle tells her that Dafne is too open for her own good. Both looking relaxed in the HISC corner.
Round 3:
Pushing back up to their feet. The fighters exchange more punches in bunches now. Dafne lands a few sweeping hooks to her opponents body. Problem for her is Natalie peppers her face when she has her guard too low, causing redness around her cheeks.
A left hook catches Dafne on her temple as she tries to step in. She gets smacked back by follow up straight shots in her face. Natalie now has Dafne covering up more tightly as she has her near the ropes. Natalie switching up as she has that laser focus look that has put fear in plenty of opponents.
Dafne starts swinging out her guard late in the round. Natalie simply moves back and lands a jab/straight into the face of Dafne to knock her head back. The bell rings not long later with Natalie nodding to her corner as she clearly feels she has Dafne worked out. Dafne meanwhile gets wiped down as Ming-Na is telling her that she can't let Natalie pop off her punches so easily.
Round 4:
Dafne is quick across the canvas to surprise Natalie. Both trading on the inside as Dafne forces the issue. Natalie manages to work back Dafne with her left forearm to create space. Natalie landing several clean shots into the face of her opponent to create the gap where she wants it.
Into the second minute. Dafne crouches under a jab to come back over with an overhand left to the jaw of Natalie. A straight follows onto the chin of the former champion to knock her to her heels. Natalie covers up as Dafne works her to the torso, head down as she marches forwards.
Holding onto Dafne, Natalie gets the referee to step in to break them up. The veteran getting back into space looking happy to have seemingly got past the surge from Keen. Natalie getting her rhythm somewhat back. Dafne is forcing a few heated exchanges. The round ends with Natalie nodding to Dafne to show she respects the fight from her. They sit on their stools getting cleaned up with marks on them.
Round 5:
Exchanging around the middle of the ring. Dafne landing around the torso of Natalie. Who is smacking her back around her face. They trade in closer with Natalie needing to use her left forearm to create the distance to land short hooks around the face of her opponent.
Second minute of the round sees Natalie land a jab into nose of Dafne to open her up. A right hook clubs the smaller woman around her ear to make her take a step back. A LEFT HOOK TO THE JAW SENDS DAFNE ONTO HER BACKSIDE!
Natalie walks over to the neutral corner with her fans roaring her on. 1....2....3... Dafne shakes her head to clear the cobwebs. 4....5....6... Dafne pushes up to her right knee, looking annoyed as she looks at the referee. 7....8... Getting back to her feet, fists raised to show she can fight on.
They resume with Natalie not charging in. Natalie mixing up her punches. Dafne showing resilience to come back at Natalie. They trade around the center of the ring. Dafne has a little swelling under her right eye from stiff jabs. Dafne coming over the top with a few hooks till the bell rings. Natalie has her arms massaged as Michelle and her talk tactics how to finish this bout now.
Round 6:
Dafne is up and showing fight to trade with Natalie. Both women slamming in stiffer punches as they plant their feet more. Crouching under a straight, Dafne lands a right into the liver area of Natalie to make her wince as she gasps. An overhand left smacks Natalie on her jaw as she isn't looking so keen now.
Opening minute of the round is past and Natalie is being swamped by Dafne as she is worked to the ropes. Natalie trying to clinch up, BUT A RIGHT AGAIN LANDS AROUND THE STOMACH OF NATALIE! DOWN SHE GOES TO HER RIGHT KNEE WITH HER CHEEKS TURNING RED!
Dafne walks over to the neutral corner with Ming-Na yelling "that's it!" As Dafne nods to her. 1....2....3... Natalie takes deep breaths as she rubs her stomach. 4....5....6... She grabs the ropes behind her with her left glove. 7....8... She pushes gingerly to her feet. Nodding to the referee after raising her fists in the air.
Back at it they go but Natalie doesn't seem to have as much sting behind her punches. Dafne is slamming in more body shots after stinging her face with straight shots. ANOTHER RIGHT TO THE LIVER AREA HAS NATALIE BENT OVER AND THE REFEREE HAS SEEN ENOUGH AS THEY STEP IN! WAVING THE FIGHT OFF!
Winner Dafne Keen TKO Round 6
After:
Raising her arms into the air as Dafne looks overjoyed to have beaten a legend. Natalie spits out her gumshield to the canvas before Dafne goes to check on her. Dafne has her right glove on the back of Natalie as the crowd giving them a round of applause.
In the ring comes Ming-Na and Michelle come in. They both are respectful of each other as they check on their fighters. Natalie gets an ice pack on her stomach, telling Dafne "you are tough as nails" nodding to the youngster to show she has earned her respect. Before heading back to their corners to be cleaned up.
Natalie looking sore as she sits down and gets help with taking her gloves off. Michelle tells her "I hope you aren't feeling old now" with a wink. Natalie joking "well I need to stop fighting women old enough to be my daughter." Showing how relaxed they are about the defeat. Natalie showing how easily she bounces back from defeats at this stage of her career.
While across the ring the normally cool Dafne is looking excited by winning against a legend of the FCBA. Ming-Na telling her "you have to remember this fight going forwards. You got put down and got up to fight back." Dafne nods after getting her gloves taken off.
The fighters walk to the center of the ring. Natalie has the ice pack still on her stomach in her right hand. With Dafne getting her left hand raised in the air. Natalie nods before she has Dafne coming over to her to thank her for fighting her. Natalie replies "don't think I'll be so kind next time around." Winking at Dafne before she gingerly leaves the ring.
Dafne thanks her fans as she looks into the nearest camera. She steps out the ring with Ming-Na. Can she build herself up into a title contender now as she has a hall of famer on her record now? |
