Which is why I am now going to face off with Dua Lipa. Now, Ms. Lipa, I just want you to know that while I used to have a prejudice against models, I have amended my views. Enough of you have beaten me up to show that I was underestimating them. I assure you. I do not underestimate you.”
Dua Lipa smiles: “That is very nice of you to say. I should also mention I consider myself a singer and a songwriter who also models. And I also have no intention of underestimating you.”
“Then this should be a very interesting fight and those are my favorite kind of fights,” Mary says.
“Then we have that in common as well. You just happen to have been doing it a good deal longer than myself,” Dua purred.
“Indeed I have and hope to show you just how much I have learned over the years,” Mary said with tinge in her voice.
“How kind of you,” Dua says drily.
“All part of the ‘MEW Experience’,”Mary assured her.
Dua rolled her eyes: “I am sure it will be memorable.”
“I’ll do my best,” says Mary. “I will see you in the ring.”
The two do see each other in the ring. Dua is in a fancy two piece light purple and white outfit with dark purple boots and gloves (white laces). Her hair is pulled back in a battle braid. Mary in dark blue bikini with matching boots and gloves. Her bobbed hair is loose and wetted down. They stand there, Mary smiling with a certain slyness and Dua giving her a defiant smile in return. However the ring instructions prove simple enough. It is only when Dua rams her gloves into Mary for the “touch” that the tension between them comes briefly to the surface. They trhen go to their corners and impatiently jog in place until the bell rings. DING!
R1: MEW moves out smoothly to the attack, Left up around her chin while using her right to strike at Dua to the head. Dua trying to bob and weave to make herself less of a target, but she also trying to use her jab for quick counters. Mary brings her left into action with a series of right/left, one/two combos to the jaw. These finally oblige Dua to fall back to clear her spinning head. Mary crisply following with a series of clipping uppies to the chin. Dua being pushed back, though she does manage to steer clear of being pushed into the ropes. Round sends in a wide win for Winnie.
R2: Mary right back at it, mostly using her right while using her left mostly for defense, but now Dua is showing a better defense. Mary’s punches not getting through as before to the head. Mary then goes to the body. Hooks begin to dig into Dua’s rib cage and abs. However Dua responds strongly with hooks that slam into MEW’s ribs and belly and gradually she is being pushed back. Then Dua suddenly steps back to give herself some room and to cause Mary to lurch forward off balance. Dua then unloads a crackling hard right off Mary’s jaw that spins her head top one side amid a spray of sweat. Mary suddenly rubbery legged as Dua is upon her. Mary managing top protect her head, but not before she’ s had her bell rung with more head punches. Mary staggering sideways into the ropes. Huddling against the strands as Dua pounds away at her left side where MEW side ribs taking a licking. Mary hanging in there to the bell, but she looks shell-shocked return to her corner. Dua Lipa looking quite pleased as she wins this round wide.
R3: Mary and Dua now battling it out in the center of the ring. Dua trying to draw Mary into another trap, but MEW’s not biting this time. Dua then has to settle for banging it out to the body with the veteran tough girl. Elbows are moving in and out like the pistons of steam engine moving at high speed. Dua now able to get her hooks in deep and hard enough to make Mary gurgle as she knocked back on her heels. Dua seems momentarily confused and is slow to get her high guard up. However onceit is in place, Dua able to defend her head and Mary very quickly goes down to put all the energy she can into body punching, Dua soon bent forward at the waist, gasping and gurgling as new punches come thundering against her already aching torso. Mary then moves Dua steadily towards the rope. Dua tries to slip away, but Mary cuts her off and keeps driving her to the strands. Ony the sounding of the bell keeps Dua off the ropes. MEW wins round wide.
R5: Terrific battle breaks out as Dua Lipa and Mary Winstead shoot out of their corners at the start of this round and the leather starts to fly. Dua going for Mary’s jaw and the side of her head with these punches. Mary giving it right back to Dua’s head and jaw. The two are slowly circling as they battle on. Punches now dropping down to the bodies, but just as quick, they now go for the chin and land some real staggering head snappers. Knees on both are quivering are a few moments but then they go back at each other to the body. These body shots are slower, but srtill packing power that has both fighters shuddering and groaning as the impacts send shockwaves through their bodies. They are now toe to toe and forehead to forehead, just trying to break the other, but not able to do it. Crowd is screaming with excitement. Bell finally sounds and they totter away from each other, both looking drained and gray-faced from the effort. Judges call the round a DRAW.
R6: Mary looks slower coming out for the new round. Dua Lipa moving a bit faster, but she’s hardly racing forward. They do have no trouble locating each other at center ring, but initial punching looks much slower in the opening minute. Then Dua Lipa finds an opening and gets in a sneaky right uppercut that clearly stuns a surprised Mary. Dua then quickly builds on the blow with a barrage of follow-up rights and lefts to the head. Mary hastily pulling back, trying to tighten her high guard, but still taking a lot of head shots before she can slam the door. Now Dua finds a new target as she swings over to pound away at Mary’s left side ribs. Mary just trying to turn away from this attack. She’s not getting many counters going. Dua now swings back to face Mary and now go down to attacking Mary to the belly and ribs. Mary hunching up, trying to just protect her throbbing midsection, but only getting a few counters off. Dua finishes with some bouncing shots off the top of Mary’s head as she cruises to a wide end on the judges cards.,
R7: Foxfire corner crews work hard on NMEW during the break and she does come out with more vigor than the previous round., However Dua Lipa looks full of energy and eager to put an end to this fight. She immediately goes after Mary with a big, swinging right to the head, but Mary ducks under the blow and brings her left up into Dua’s chin. Dua’s head snaps and Mary rams her right into Dua’s midsection doubling her up with a groan. Dua trying to duck away, but Mary is moving with her., She strikes at Dua to the head, shoulders and flanks. Dua not being given time to collect herself and recover. Then a right to the head spins Dua towards Mary who again hammers her in the belly, Dua falls backwards into the ropes. Dua struggles to set up a defensive position on the ropes, but it’s not working. Mary[s deep digging belly busters have Dua up on her toes and then her knees crumble. DOWQN GOES DUA LIPA! Dua lands first on her knees and then topples forward, arms at her sides, into the canvas. Mary makes her way to the neutral corner and looks back as the official counts. Dua does stir and valiantly tries to rise as the count rises over her. She reaches a crouching position and starts to rise—but loses her balance and topples backwards. She is in a a sitting position, leaning against the ropes with a blank look on her.
“NINE!...TEN!...YER OUT!” cries the referee.
THE WINNER: MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD DEFEATS DUA LIPA KO7!
After: Mary breaks into a big smile and waves to her cheering fans. She then goes over ton check on Dua Lipa give her a supportive hug.
“She’s got good stuff. She certainly busted me up good at times, but I think she might not have realized my ability to come back from a beating is not a legend. I admit I can’t always do it, but, as she found out the hard way—it can happen. “ Mary tells reporters later. “I got to say it feels awfully good to be 3-0 so far this year. I can’t wait for my next fight. Well, maybe I should wait for these bruises to heal, but I;m still healing fast, so it shouldn’t be too long.”
Dua Lipa says: “I got to say Mary Winstead really is a tough as they say. My hat goes off to those girls who have beaten her, especially on their first time meeting her. I really thought I had her ready to go after the 6th, but she came back, just like I had always heard and she kicked my butt. Mind you, I won’t be so careless if we ever meet again. I think I could get a whole different resukt in a second crack at her.”
Mary Elizabeth Winstead again showed her remarkable ability to “take a licking and keep on ticking!” Mary herself admits that it doesn’t mean she can come back from a bad round to win a fight, but she has done it often enough to always make a possibility. Dua Lipa put up a good battle against the veteran MEW, but jumped to the conclusion Mary was done after 6—only to find the tables reverse and she was the one counted out. An unfortunate setback from Dua, but she is a clearly a talented lightweight with many more fights in her future. Meanwhile Mary (currently ranked #9) just knocked off the #5 Lightweight which should put her in the serious contention if she can maintain her unbeaten streak. We will just have to see what happens next. |
