intro:
We kick off tonights pay per view. Former BBU flyweight champion Ivana Baquero takes on the debuting singer and actor Halle Bailey. Can the talented Hailey win her debut in boxing or will Ivana show what it means to be elite in this sport?
Going into the contest both spoke through social media. Ivana made the announcement of the bout when she posted "I've been told that I get to face another Hollywood star on pay per view. Anna Sawai was last month, this time I get Halle Bailey. I wonder if these rookies think I am going to take it easy on them. Keep on coming is all I'll say. 🥊🥊"
Halle posts on her own account "I have been training hard for a good while with my sister Chloe. I know Ivana is a serious fighter but I am here to show I have more to me then just a pretty face and a gorgeous voice."
Fight night! Ivana is out first with her coach Taryn Terrell behind her. She bangs her red gloves together as she walks to the ring. She is fired up as she steps into the ring wearing a yellow sports bra with red stripes down the sides, matching trunks and shoes, hair tied into a ponytail. Taryn telling her to take this fight serious.
Halle now walks down the aisle smiling as she looks excited. She has her coach following as she takes some selfies with fans to show she is not worried about making Ivana wait. She climbs into the ring wearing a black sports bra with gold stripes down the sides, matching trunks, black shoes and gloves, hair is braided. Halle bounces on her toes nodding to the referee when asked if she is ready.
They are brought to the center of the ring for the final instructions bto be read out by the referee. Eyes locked as Halle looks more serious now. They do respectfully touch gloves before returning to their corners. Once ready the bell rings to start 10 rounds of flyweight action.
Round 1:
Out the fighters come with Ivana giving Halle a few digs around her torso to test her out. Halle responding by standing her ground to land straight punches into the face of the former champion. Both at times stepping inside to work each others abs before they push apart as Halle is showing that she is in this seriously.
After the opening minute Ivana lands a short left hook under the ribs of Halle before landing an uppercut. Halle finds herself knocked back onto the ropes. Where Ivana goes back to working the body with short hooks to make Halle groan with each hit.
Pushing off Ivana, Halle gets up on her toes landing several stiff jabs into the face of the oncoming Ivana. Both are slinging in straight shots as they box at midrange. The round comes to an end with Halle not embarrassing herself by any stretch in her first ever round of boxing. Still Ivana looks the happier as she sits on her stool.
Round 2:
They resume with Halle coming out on her toes exchanging stiff single punches with Ivana. Both women sticking in at times to work the others torso as grunts and groans can be heard. Heads nearly get bumped by the fighters as they move in closer to work.
An overhand right catches Ivana on her face as Halle shows her skills off. Ivana now finding herself being knocked into a neutral corner. Where she swings in hooks till Ivana can grab hold of her in a clinch. They are broken apart with Halle tapping her gloves together as she is keen to keep fighting.
Bumping forearms as they exchange in tight. Hissing at each other as they are not giving an inch. Halle landing a few cuffing hooks around the ears of Baquero. Who responds by landing her hooks under the ribs of the singer. At the bell they nudge apart before walking to their corners. Halle has her supporters chanting her name as Ivana sits scowling at her from her corner.
Round 3:
Stepping back out to fight, Halle is looking good when she is up on her toes landing punches into the face and chest of Ivana. She is stepping in closer at times to work and that's where Ivana starts to come into her own with little nudges to open up her power shots.
An uppercut rocks back Halle to her heels. Ivana muscles her back to the ropes whacking in short hooks. Halle manages to push her way free but Ivana is keeping her on the back foot. Punches catching the young woman on her forehead to snap it back as Ivana looks to have found another gear.
Halle needing to double up her jab late in the round to make sure Ivana doesn't pin her down again. Ivana digging in some more punches around the belly button of her opponent when she crouches down. The bell rings to end proceedings with Ivana nodding at Halle with a grin. Halle takes a breath to keep cool as she walks back to her corner.
Round 4:
Sticking to using a double jab, Halle is starting to get more of a rhythm at range as she adds a few straights and right crosses. Ivana dipping down at times to land shots around the ribs and stomach. They trade away in close range when Ivana can push the pace.
A straight catches Ivana on her nose to bring a tear to her eyes. Halle forces Ivana back to the outside part of the ring. She has found her own higher gear as she is forcing pace up a notch with combinations.
Ivana is trying to match the intensity of her foe. Halle is outworking her, forcing Ivana to cover up more. At the end of the round Halle gets a high five from her coach as that was her best round of the fight so far. Ivana meanwhile taps her toes keen to get back out to show Halle whose the queen of this ring.
Round 5:
Resuming with Halle again starting off the action with straight shots. Ivana dipping down to land with her own rights aimed at the torso of her opponent. Halle landing several hooks around the jaw of Ivana to send some sweat flying off her brow.
A straight catches Ivana on her forehead to snap it back. Halle works her back to the ropes, where Ivana is getting worked around her ribs now by Halle. The American fires in hooks around the guard of Ivana till she gets caught with a right on her chin to knock her head back.
Under forty five seconds to go, Ivana manages to force the fight back to the center after landing a left cross on the face of Halle to knock her head back. They go toe to toe with the crowd cheering both women on. The bell dings with both staring each other down. Walking back to their corner with both showing fighting spirit.
Round 6:
Again they exchange around the middle of the ring. Halle trying to keep boxing on the move but Ivana catches her with an overhand right on her chin to knock her onto her heels. Ivana digs more punches into the ribs of Halle as she pins her into a neutral corner. Halle fighting back but soon needs to hold onto Ivana to force the referee to step in.
Resuming with both trading jabs along with straight shots. Ivana catches Halle with a left hook on her jaw as the former champion is timing her attacks better now. Halle eats an uppercut that makes her stumble to the ropes. Where Ivana is whacking away with hooks.
Pushing off Ivana again. Halle showing inexperience there as Ivana simply is able to reset quickly and come back at her. They exchange but Halle is looking a little shaky. A RIGHT CROSS KNOCKS HALLE ONTO HER HEELS BEFORE A LEFT HOOK ON THE CHIN SENDS HER ONTO HER BACK!
The Baquero fans cheer as Bailey's boo. Ivana walking to the neutral corner with a smile as she looks at Halle laying spread eagle. 1....2....3... Groaning on her back, Halle looks at the lights with a glassy look to her eyes. 4....5.... She moves her right glove to cover her face. 6....7... Before trying to turn to her front to start getting up. 8....9... She makes it to all fours but 10 Halle is counted out!
Winner Ivana Baquero KO Round 6
After:
Ivana was made to work for this one. She raises her arms into the air before blowing kisses to a section of her fans in the crowd holding a Spain flag up. Once she is done celebrating she walks back to her corner to get a fist bump from Taryn.
While Halle is helped up to her feet and walked to her corner to sit on her stool by her coach. She is told not to be too disheartened by this loss as they talk about what happened. Halle nods but understandably looks gutted as she did have her moments on top of this contest to show there is potential here.
Over comes Ivana once both fighters have their gloves taken off. She gives a few kind words to the rookie before they share a fist bump to show respect. Ivana walking back to her corner as Halle is helped out the ring by her coach. It'll be interesting to see what Halle does next in the ring as it doesn't look like this was a one off.
In the ring Ivana walks to the neutral corner after getting a drink of water. She has her left arm raised by the referee as the former champion continues her winning run. Though she'll have to get herself back amongst the contenders before she can really call out the champion Michelle Keegan to fight. At least she looks confident and is getting bouts under her belt again.
The victor bows to each side of the ring to show respect for a great crowd. Walking out the ring with her coach, both head to the back with Taryn joking that Ivana will scare rookies away from boxing if she keeps beating them, making Ivana laugh. |
