All the talk coming in was of a re-tooled Lucy Liu back with the woman who engineered her rise to the top of the pound for pound charts, Janet Jones Gretzky, Certainly, the choice of opponent bespoke the old confidence: nobody faces Jada Pinkett Smith at 110 unless a.) they can’t get a fight anywhere else and b.) they feel invulnerable. For Lucy Liu, it would be combination of those elements which led to one of the hardest, most harrowing scraps of her life.

Lucy turned back the clock early, fighting explosive, unorthodox power-potshotting style in the first three rounds that had Pinkett wobbly butt and tottering on more than one occasion. Satisfied that Jada wouldn’t go, Liu settled into a roaming, leaping, prowling attack that gave Lucy control of the ring and minimized Pinkett’s opportunities, punctuated by the odd exquisite, cracking chin-check of the redoubtable Ms. Smith.

Slowly, but surely, as the shock of Lucy’s crushing power wore off, and as Jada began to read the supple movement of her foe, Pinkett-Smith crawled her way back into this fight. Starting in the 8th, Jada crippled Lucy with body shots and sent her reeling with a left hook on the chin. The bombardment would increase in intensity, putting Liou on her back twice in the 9th and threatening to upset the comeback timetable once agin, but in the 20th, Lucy stabilized the situation, Fighting ruggedly on the inside and holding her own, Liu halted the Pinkett rally, took the pivotal final round by a nose and salted away a bruising win.

Not the blow-out, devastating performance Lucy might have wanted, but a significant victory against a dangerous, under-rated foe nonetheless. During her slump, we didn’t see Lucy get up off the canvas much to eke out hardnosed wins: she did that tonight.
