It’s easy to dismiss Jennifer Lopez in the FCBA, despite her one-time gaudy credentials. Wildly erratic in her training, capricious with promoters and site operators, high handed and haughty during negotiations—we forget that when properly motivated and harnessed, Ms. Lopez knows how to fight, She would give away pounds and power to her tree-trunk legged opponent on this night, and yet found a way to be the aggressor. It would be Jennifer’s consistency, strength-sapping body attack and anticipatory head movement which would separate her from the bigger hitting Knowles on the night.
You had to go back to Lopez/Judd some 4 years now to see a Jlo this sharp, this committed to the body. Round after punishing round, she would bob and weave her way in close, then work to Beyonce’s midsection and ribs, backing the bigger girl up and finishing the heats string against the ropes, Knowles won her fair share of early minutes, but by just the fourth round was mouthbreathing and starting to take breaks, clinching and mugging Lopez rather than working: it would be a harbinger of things to come.
Lopez cemented her dominance in brutal, grinding, no frills middle rounds that saw her get to Beyonce’s chest, beat Knowles into compliance with bodyshots, then work the bigger girl over at the hopes with little or no resistance. With Knowles in shock, exhausted and wobbly butt—Lopez’ hook starting finding skull with sickening insistence—shaking Knowles to her foundations in each of the last three stanzas. The stoppage would come from a sustained barrage of tidy punching, Lopez to Knowles, as Beyonce sat an d slumped forward off the ropes, Jennifer bashed away coldhearted, shoving and slugging, ripping her hook head and body as Knowles basically quit on her feet, then slowly sank to her knees in a torrent of Latina leather.
Sweet, sweet vindication for the oft overlooked Jennifer Lopez, and a brash new confidence to go along with it. When asked about the daunting prospect of a proposed Mariah Carey bout—Jennifer shrugged and smiled, “Bring her on,” showing on disdain for Carey’s advantages in right hand power, size and strength. “Everybody’s the same once I chop’em down to size,” Jennifer would quip.
