They called it the “Battle of the Elegant Assassins” in the Montreal Gazette and 10,000 fans were in attendance for this international clash of sultry slicksters. It was a fight motivated by Marceau’s twin desires to maintain her ranking and visit her adopted home away from home, Montreal—but it would be the so-called “Cameron Diaz of the North” Holt who would steal the show.
Right from the start, sleek, stylist brunette Sandrine gave the French Sorceress a bitter taste of her own medicine, drilling a silky right clean on the button, then hanging back and taking advantage as Marceau pressed to even the score. The pattern would repeat itself, minute after excruciating minute, round after diabolic round: Holt baiting, boxing, and hurting her foe—Marceau astonished, regrouping, struggling to find a way into the fight.
Consider the statistical breakdown of the fight—dominant numbers rarely, if ever, put up against the usual elusive Marceau, Holt would take 7 of 10 rounds, visibly hurting Marceau in the first, fifth, sixth, seventh and tenth. Only in the tenth did Sophie prove a warrior, rallying from yet another oily right hand on her chin to finally score heavily with her own thrusting left. The crowd would surge to its feet in the final moments of this fight, with both regal beauties swinging away like a couple of washer-women slugging it out in a kitchen.
The final tally was so alarming to Ms. Marceau that she immediately began beating her cowering retainer with a hair brush, drawing boos from the usually pro-Marceau crowd, and a look of disgust from her conqueress in the opposite corner. Sophie’s true colours came out under pressure this night—her shock and humiliation boiling through that icy crust.
