STABLE WAR

Before: Trainers lay it on the line, boxer vs puncher match up expected as each women exemplifies their respective house styles. When asked if it were intimidating to be facing on iconic blonde celebrity like Jones, Syren remarks, “Let’s see—she’s famous for playing some cheesy gymnast and marrying a hockey player. I think I can handle the glare.” Ouch. Jones downplaying Syren’s pro-career as “stumble-bumming for drinks and towel fees,” adding, “has she ever fought in front of a crowd before?” Clearly, pride on the line as the battle of wits gives way to a battle of mitts. Jones in white sports bra, white aerobic bottoms, Syren in black sports bra, evergreen aerobics bottoms.
During R1: Jones on her toes, hands at her chest—she’ll stop, pop 3 or 4 straight pitty pat lefts and rights up the middle, then step lively to her left. Syren flat footed, closing up her guard to block a lot of this work, driving in hard off her back foot to land solid rights against Jones’ ribcage in tactical give and take. Final minute, Jones points the left shoulder at Syren, slide stepping back to fade Syren’s right and times a beautiful lancing right counter on the jaw that has the brunette stepping funky, Jones very limber on follow up, lashing the right to the temple, backhanding it, clouting the left, stiff-arming the left palm against Syren’s face to keep her off balance at the bell.
R2: Shutout Janet Jones. Pretty dancing on the outside—meaningless flurries up the middle—but it’s Janet getting off, Syren blocking, and brunette not moving her upperbody—makes it LOOK like she’s getting hit when she’s not. Janet doing most of the damage with her jab, slicing it in hard and straight to the mouth as she lanky-legs to her left.
R3: Syren not discouraged, continues to walk the blonde down, driving in with lead right hands to the ribcage, but this time putting the hook up top to send Jones scurrying on her heels. Janet doing more running than effective boxing—jabbing off her back foot rather than committing to messing up Syren’s face.
R4: Jones fading back, gets Syren over-extended and leans in suddenly to beat her to right hands once gain, nearly sending brunette to one knee. Syren glassy-eyed, wobbling on the spot as Janet licks away with wide left hands and chopping rights, beating Syren’s face shiny as brunette back hits the ropes. Jones content to head hunt, stepping in and out, letting her hands go in blurring arcs, posting another scintillating shutout as Syren looks shopworn through 4.
R5: Syren finally puts wince on Jones’ face, buckling the blonde’s knees with that crunching straight right hand—Syren finally able to hook to the jaw, then get all the way inside as Janet’s back sinks into ropes, big and beefy to the waist—Syren crouched with her head and gloves on Janet’s chest., suddenly ripping hooks to the rightside ribcage to drive Jones to a corner. Janet breaking down, cupping Syren’s head in her hands, just trying to control the rampaging brunette at the bell.
R6: Janet realizes it’s a fight—grits her teeth and starts to pump stick with heartless precision this round. Syren welting up on her left eye—Janet just smoking in her left hand with awful persistence. Jones getting lanky limbed—slapping a hook off the jab, dipping her shoulder and licking at Syren’s sturdy ribcage. Brunette stepping forward but can’t get off and down the stretch, a beautiful straight one/two on the chin has Syren nearly on her knees again. Brunette wobbly butt at the bell as blonde takes a hard look before strutting off.
R7: Shutout Syren! Brunette sing a stubby jab between the breasts to gain entrance, then cramming in tight, fighting off the taller woman’s chest with abrupt, ripping lefts and rights downstairs, Jones grunting in pain, pushing her forearms against Syren’s broad shoulders, trying to force her off, but the brunette just keep coming. Final half of the round all Syren getting big on Janet—smearing the blonde against the ropes, pounding away across the belly and ringing up jaw with the odd dangerous hook out of a Marciano.
R8: Syren continues to outwork Jones, Janet mouth open, achy-ribbed, backing up as she pokes jabs, right crosses until her back hits the ropes, then Syren takes over. Syren luxuriating in her weight and brawn advantage, pressing Jones heavily into the ropes, shoving her back with forearms and shoulders, then heaving in the clobbering, Marciano-style lefts and rights to body and head, Syren able to rotate her torso up and down, pulling her punches into Jones with blockbuster force as the blonde covers up, tries to nip counters in between.
R9: Janet toeing in a fine line between boxing and running this round, showing plenty of leg, but also pounding Syren’s left eye shut with that flawless jab. Syren coming forward with crossed arms and bobbing head action, hurling right hands into the body, but missing the follow up hook as Jones does a nice job of leaning away, turning at the ropes to keep from being worked on.
R10: Jones away, away, away—pumping her jab, standing and whipping a lanky Hearns hook, then stepping out to keep her distance, Syren stubbornly walking her girl down, landing several satisfying haymakers to the ravaged midsection of her foe, but failing to bring Jones off her toes, Janet nice as she sidesteps, palming Syren’s shoulders, or pushing the brunette off balance with a hand behind the elbow. At the bell—both women raise their hands in victory—it’s that close. Come back a hard fought, 1 point win for Janet Jones Gretzky—to mixed reaction from the crowd.
After: No love lost, but women shake hands and hug perfunctorily after the decision—Jones turning away to smile broadly and chat up her people—Syren stony-eyed, shaking her head at the decision, Jones smoother to watch, may have bamboozled judges in a lot of rounds, but she did crack Syren some beautiful right hands and looked dominant often enough to justify the win. Syren consistently heavy handed, but never landing gaudy, nor threatening to drop or stop her talented foe, has to be satisfying with making the fight all night long as Jones fought safety first.
