Before: Oldest rivalry in women’s sports, that between tennis and skating, heats up as the phenom Martina Hingis meets Nicole Bobek in Paris, Hingis a vocal critic of the boxing hierarchy, gets a fight for wh9ch she campaigned long and hard. Bobek not thought to pose much of a challenge, although her creativity might take Hingis by surprise. Adidas sponsored bout, red terrycloth shorts of Hingis, black jog bra, teal bottoms for Nicole, white top.

During R1: As expected, Nicole comes out full of sound and fury, loading up on right hands, and wailing away from all angles, Hingis gets caught a couple of licks, glancing blows, but keeps her head. She retreats for much of the round, moving her feet and upper body, while searching for the inevitable counter opportunities. In the final minute, Hingis bends low and inside on Nicole, causing the blonde to miss high. Hingis comes up with a gouging left hook to the ribs, left hook to the jaw combination AND NICOLE GOES DOWN! Bobek rolls to a stop on her back, and beats the count with glassy eyes. IT”S ALL OVER!! Controversial stoppage as the ref waves it off. Nicole bursts into tears as Hingis does her triumphal strut around the ring.

After: Jolting counter hooks definitely hurt Nicole, but with seconds left in the bout, a case could have been made for letting her get to the corner for the respite. Hingis unperturbed by the criticism says: “If she wants another chance to olose, she’s got it.”
