Cynics nodded knowingly when this fight was made: here was KruZher chess-playing at it's finest. With golden-girl Loken safely ensconced atop the big-girl throne, long suffering Kathy was asked to put on a few pounds, face the murderous punching Hunter and 'take a little steam' out of her as Rachel's momentum towards a title shot had reached freight train proportions. Nothing was said about winning - even Heigl's camp had a doomed, good-soldier air about it. Kathy was being trotted out to take one for the team and set Kristanna up pretty, if possible. When it was all over, the KruZherS were left with a classic middleweight controversy.
Flat footed, fighting tall, Rachel Hunter set about breaking down and destroying her opponent with ruthless efficiency, obviously pursuing an abrupt stoppage in the early going. Hunter stalked, pounded out telephone pole jabs, drove home right crosses and walked a shellshocked Kathy Heigl down all around the ring. A tell tale moment came in the third - with Heigl badly worn down, getting hit - Rachel Hunter touched her the jab and bent into a gorgeous clocking right on the jaw, maybe the hardest punch Rachel's ever thrown in competition. Heigl went immediately wobbly butt - feet squaring up, hands crossing reflexively across her body, knees buckling - but the big blonde refused to go down. So stunned was Hunter at the resiliency of her foe that Katherine was able to take the next round, driving a thudding heart punch in under Rachel's left breast to back her up for the first time in the bout.
Hunter regrouped. The middle rounds saw a little more shuffling, big woman lateral movement - nothing too dramatic, just a little step and poke as Heigl crossed her arms and caught stiff lefts on her sleepy face. Minute after minute droned by - Rachel's eyes locked intensely on target - straight pounding punches reducing her stubborn opponent to staggering rubble by the 6th. In the seventh, Hunter resumed her power punching ways - POUNDING away glorious right hands, palming Heigl tuff in the shoulders, bodying and bumping her backwards. After absorbing one gobsmacking blockbuster after another - Heigl finally bounced to her buttocks at the ropes, listing to one side in swoon, but finding the heart to beat the count. Hunter shook her head in stark disbelief, hardened her heart, and resolved to pour it on.
The 8th saw more consistent Rachel Hunter pressure - that ram-stamping jab, that cruching right cross and some strapping, soul-stealing hooks across creamy midsection that had Heigl bent forward dumb with punishment. Still Kathy wouldn't go. And in the 9th, Heigl's persistence would be rewarded.
Rachel came out to clean up, intent on the KO - no way could Katherine Heigl absorb the beating she had and punch with any heat - the Aussie marched through the front door, pounding away right hands off the jab as she had all night long. Kathy bobbed at her waist, arms crossed against her body, occasionally driving in that stubby right to the heart, then getting low under Hunter haymakers. The end came in a thunderclap - Heigl ruined a Hunter right hand by ducking in and plugging her own right beneath the heart, then with RAchel rebalancing - Katherine twisted out of her crouch with a single, shattering hook. Hunter's head swivelled, Hunter's hands dropped as she toppled backward, feet rooted to the spot. In one clapping stroke, the fight was over - RAchel Hunter laid out cold on her back as a battered Katherine Heigl staggered away the sudden, shocking victor. KO9 Heigl!
